What is the word to describe two beings in a symbiotic realationship?
I'm not making fun it honestly escapes me.
Mutually beneficial, but in that case the symbiot has to provide something that somehow aids the host, which a fetus does not. Symbiot suggests something in this relationship with a host body.
I suppose in a sence you are correct since the value of parenthood has dropped like a brick. Mind that if you accept the thought of a fetus being a parasite, you were a parasite once too.
Actually, an interesting bit about the SRY gene.
So, during fetal development, there is a careful balance between the mother and the fetus, both of which require nutrients. Female fetuses - since they will one day become mothers, and do not want to have demanding fetuses of their own - only take a small amount of nutrients from the mother, and maintain equilibrium. Male fetuses, however, have no such complications, and take as much as they possibly can to become stronger than the females.
The result is that carrying a male child weakens the mother. This is supported by statistic evidence in which mothers who bear many male children tend to die earlier than mothers who bear many female children, and rates of death during childbirth are much higher when the child is male.
So the pretty picture of the beautiful union in which an adoring mother creates a child within her really is inaccurate. In reality, it's a bitter and ugly war, and two third of the time the mother's body wins, killing the fetus and leading to miscarriage.
