No, I wouldn't use a rumor towards the aim at making a person better / worse than they already are. For example, if I was to say that my friend was a weight lifter from Brazil and people wanted to meet him, what would I have to show but a guy who weighs 100 pounds and lifts only books for a living? Yeah... Even good rumors can be bad.

Let people think what they want. As long as everyone you care about knows the truth, who care if nobody has the balls to find out the truth. If they want to think bad about you then they don't deserve the truth.
