Er, my idea of equality is females being able to live however they want to.

I don't want to be SO equal to males that females get drafted and beaten up with no pity or anything. Honestly, I enjoy the gentle respect I get from my boyfriend for being a physically timid female. I like being in the kitchen and making him food, I like babies, I like pink, I like being pretty.

If a female wants to shave her head and go body-building and kick up dust and cuss and spit and never have kids and go into the army, then she should be free to do that without judgment, just as a male should be free to primp himself and be delicate.

yea that's kinda how i think of it DH. I mean just physically, it is a lot harder for women to bulk up, and on performance in the military, they really can't do the job so drafting them would be stupid.. but drafting is stupid anyway, i mean you can draft a nerd or a fat guy XD. But i think if a woman like bulked her self up and trained her self enough she should be able to join voluntarily.. someday.. when society is ready for it.

@Marrionetta: Mm, yeah. I'm ambivalent about affirmative action. I think reverse discrimination is occurring when minorities get advantages, but on the other hand, we can't all start on the same level of opportunity. Some people grow up where education is poor, or opportunity to get one is slim. This results in the perpetuation of disparity between the disadvantaged and majority. So I guess the problem should be equalizing the starting point....which means giving certain advantages to the minority....gah. >> Complicated.

Equalizing the starting point is.. harder than it sounds. Just because the entire american society is kind of built on giving bull s**t to minorities, and those who have an advantage would NEVER want to give it up. AA is just one of the few few few things in the world trying to at least do SOMETHING. And although it's flawed.. it's all we got for now.. i'd rather it stay around and try to be fixed instead of banishing it forever.

@Aine; i'm pro affirmative action because i think minorities get so much bull crap in their lives it's unfair to judge them the same as a white middle class male XD. Just leaving the race issue alone isn't going to help it.

I honestly think that if two canidates for a job are equally qualified in all areas, they should be considered equally for the position. I'm a mutt, Filipeno and Black, but the very little crap I've gotten about it is about the same as rednecks get for being rednecks. Go figure.

I don't think I'm entitled to anything over anyone else just because my family comes from a line of enslaved people. I was not ever enslaved. I have not been wronged, and I think it's horrible to hold someone responsible for the sins of their fathers. I don't believe in attainder of blood.

Life Science. You'd think I'd be in bio or chemistry... I'm not complaining though. The easier the better, I always say. But yeah, high school. It was long, but I got to use my book. Which was good. I would have totally flunked that test without it. xD

I think by the time we have kids, the world still wouldn't have changed. Of course i will raise them to be color blind in the sense that they treat everyone equally, but they must know of the s**t that goes on in our society.

And i think that if two candidates were qualified for a position but one went through a life time of discrimination, put downs and s**t, they should get the job. AA has very little to do with the past than it has to the future and how the past still is here in the future. You might not live in an area where you get as much flak and s**t, but where i come from i know some people have it WAY harder than white people, or asian people too. Lets face it, calling a black person ******, or calling a chinese person c***k, hurts them a lot more than us calling a white person a cracker or something.

AJ - Yeah, I know how you feel. I'm just a firm advocate for compassion between human beings. I choose to not be affected by that type of negativity, so I can focus more of helping other people ignore it, too.

@Jet: Yush, I know equalizing the starting point would be extremely difficult. That's why I'm riding the fence on AA. ...And that's also why I'd be a terrible policy maker. (Politics was a stressful class...>>;; ) If AA is the only mechanism that can work to close the gap between the starting point, I'm all for it. The problem for me lies in the fact that AA doesn't work only for the disadvantaged minorities...it also works for those who classify as in the minority group, but started out as well as those in the majority. So when two people of equal starting points compete, AA gives advantage to the one classified in the minority group. This is unfair, I think. *sigh* Maybe AA should be applied to economic class rather than race or gender? But even then, it would depend on who merited their economic status in the first place...>____<;;;;;;;;;
