1. Follow Gaia's ToS and keep everything in the thread PG-13.
2. Treat others as you would like to be treated, and if you are a masochist pretend you aren't.
3. Do not steal the lineart or edit it or pass it off as your own.
4. Please avoid spamming the thread with a bunch of gifs or gigantic page-stretching images.
5. If you have complaints about the way things are run, go through official channels by sending things to the mule. That is the best way to get things accomplished.
6. Wings of Pern uses a version of the Marmalade Rule adapted (with permission and gratitude) from Warden's Weyr.
7. If your character is present at a hatching and they Impress before the dragonet goes between, that character will not Impress again. They can stand, yes, but they will not Impress again.

Wings of Pern has a roleplay setting divided primarily between Fort and Igen Weyrs and their constituent Holds. For more information on these locations, please look at their respective subforums in the guild, where there ought to be a post giving more details about them as well as listing characters associated with them.

As of the shop's opening in January 2013 it will be six turns in shop-time until the 7thPass, meaning Thread has not fallen in nearly two hundred turns and so it is doubtful any living being has seen Threadfall with their own eyes. Please refer to this timeline up to the 7th Pass to see the Pernese history that will be considered shop canon. Please also note that none of Todd's 3rd Pass information is on there. It is also not considered part of this shop's canon.

This is a somewhat loose-canon (haha?) Pern shop, meaning we restrict our pets to the traditional colors for dragons (this means there will be no white dragons, either, as they are rare even in McCaffrey's canon), but we have loosened the rules for Impression. We have also made whers more intelligent than Anne McCaffrey credits them with being. The resident shop RP boss doesn't like Todd's books and so, as previously stated, we do not use them as canon-fodder (haha?).

If you have any questions regarding canon (or other aspects of the shop), please ask them in the Q&A thread so that they can be answered by a staff member

Dragons are warm-blooded telepathic creatures bred from the firelizards indigenous to Pern that bond to human beings after hatching. The human they bond to will be their rider and train with them to fight Thread when it falls, which they do by breathing fire, as their second stomach allows them to do. They come in five colors, which are gold, bronze, brown, blue, and green. Golds and greens are female, but only gold dragons are fertile and capable of producing clutches of eggs, though either color will rise for a mating flight, during which the female in heat will take to the skies and be pursued by interested male dragons. Gold dragons do not breathe fire.

Dragons communicate telepathically with each other and through their bondmates when communicating with human beings. They cannot vocalize as humans do. They teleport by going between, which is described as an extremely cold place of nothingness. They can also travel through time in this way, but that fact is kept a secret for the most part, restricted to goldriders and bronzeriders.

Dragon eggs are soft-shelled when the gold lays them and require constant heat for the next several weeks while their shells harden under their mother's watchful gaze for approximately eight weeks. When the eggs are about to hatch the gold will hum and this will be taken up by every dragon in the Weyr.

Dragons are born knowing their own names and seek out their human bondmate and they Impress. At birth they range from golden retriever to Saint Bernard sized, depending on color, but they grow rapidly, especially during their first six months of life, during which time they must be fed frequently and their hides must be oiled daily to keep up with their growth. They are called junior weyrlings at this stage.

Between six months and a turn dragons begin flying and reach a size where they are able to bear a rider for increasing lengths of time. This period is when training intensifies for both dragon and rider and growth continues, though at a less accelerated pace than during their first six months. Dragons do a lot of maturing during this time, physically, emotionally, and mentally. They are called senior weyrlings at this time of life.

At two turns a weyrling is considered an adult, as it is at that point that they are sexually mature and their growth is complete. They are assigned to wings and given responsibilities as well as permanent weyrs to live in. Dragons live for as long as their human bondmate lives, so this stage lasts until the end of a human bondmate's life.

Whers are warm-blooded telepathic creatures bred from the firelizards indigenous to Pern that bond to human beings after hatching. The human they bond to will be their handler and train with them to fight Thread and keep watch in the dark, since they are flightless and nocturnal. The largest gold wher is approximately the size of a Terran horse

Like dragons they come in five colors, which are gold, bronze, brown, blue, and green (click for size chart). Golds and greens are female, and like dragons only golds are fertile and capable of producing eggs. Just as the color of a wher's hide is a giveaway for its sex, the color of its eyes can give away its feelings. A wher's eye color changes with its mood, following the same colors as dragons and firelizards.

Whers communicate telepathically with each other and through their bondmates when communicating with human beings. They cannot vocalize as humans do any more than dragons or firelizards can, but they are definitely more intelligent than flits, being about as intelligent as a young child. There is doubt surrounding their ability to pass between due to their inability to fly, since all trips between begin with flight to prevent reappearing in a wall or the ground.

User Image

Mother whers guard their eggs for the duration of their six week incubation period, but if a person is deemed acceptable by her handler the will be introduced to the mother, who may then allow the person to approach her clutch and pick any egg from it to care for.

User Image

Whers are not born knowing their own name, but after bonding they may adopt a variation of their handler's name, adding a -nsk to the end. They are approximately the size of a small Terran dog at birth, but they grow rapidly for their first turn until they reach adulthood. During their youth whers are taught obedience and exercised regularly to keep them fit.

User Image

Adult whers continue training until they are deemed fit for employment. Whers often find work as watchwhers or in mines, but a creative handler with a clever wher can put their bondmate to almost any task. When they are a turn old they tend to reach their full growth, which can be up to the size of a Terran horse. They will live for several decades if well-treated.

Firelizards are warmblooded empathic creatures measuring approximately two feet long from nose to tail tip, depending on color. Like dragons and whers, their hide color determines their sex and their eye color reveals their mood. Also like dragons, but unlike whers, firelizards fly, go between, and have two stomachs, one of which digests food and the other processes firestone and allows them to produce gouts of flame. Like whers but not dragons, both gold and green females can lay eggs after mating.

Firelizards communicate with each other understandably and share an empathic bond with whatever human Impresses them, but it is rare for a firelizard to be able to do more than convey emotions. Some can communicate scenes or images, but on the whole flits are about as intelligent as a Terran cat, though slightly more trainable. Perhaps that is why they tend to communicate more through body language and sounds than either whers or dragons.

User Image

Firelizard eggs are soft-shelled when laid and require constant heat for the next several weeks while their shells harden. Firelizard mothers do not brood over their clutches, and greens will even forget where they put them. When the eggs are about to hatch the nearby 'lizards will hum and work to feed the voracious hatchlings. It is at this point that a fortunate human can take the adult 'lizards' place and Impress a newly-hatched flit by feeding it and speaking soothingly to it.

User Image

Firelizards mature completely between four and six months, which means basically they have reached sexual maturity. They are able to fly almost from the moment they're born and know instinctively how to hunt and communicate with one another. They have reached their full growth and developed as much personality as they're likely to have.

Basic Info

From time to time, breedings for flits and whers will be available! Colorists will have individual breedings threads and open slots as they have time. As the breeding/clutching of a gold dragon is such a major event, gold clutches won't be obtained through these type of breedings but will be a rather plotty event.

Basic Rules

  • Breedings may be non-RP required, or RP-required depending on what kind of slots the colorist is opening.
  • Unlike dragons, both gold and green flits/whers can breed. Any color of male can be a parent.
  • You are not required to RP/roll a mating flight for breedings. You can if you want to, though!
  • Breedings cost 20k, paid to the colorist (10k from each parent).
  • You can keep one egg per clutch for yourself, the rest should be given away/raffled off/can be killed if you want/whatever. If you breed two of your own pets, you still only get one egg per clutch. You can get more eggs from future clutches, however!
  • Female flits must wait 3 OOC months between breedings, and female whers must wait until their babies reach adulthood.

Babies?!

  • Whers have 2-5 eggs, flits have 2-7 eggs (this will be rolled).
  • These will arrive as EGGS, which means that you don't know what kind of critter is inside until they hatch! We will provide a short blurb of information on egg size to give you hints, though.
  • Metallic parents = higher chance of metallic babies. A gold and a bronze will have the greatest chance of having metallic babies, a green and a bronze will have a lower chance, and metallic babies will be very unusual for green/blue or green/brown pairings. Again, this will be rolled.
  • Additional RPs may be used to add an extra egg to a clutch, according to what kind of slots the colorist doing breedings is opening.
  • There may be some kind of special event tokens to add an extra egg as well, but we haven't worked on ideas for these yet!
  • If there's a demand for it we may consider allowing people to add custom babies to a clutch.

Basic Info

From time to time, customs for flits, whers and dragons will be available! Colorists will have individual customs threads and open slots as they have time. Gold dragons most likely won't be available through regular paid customs. When colorists open customs they will make a note saying whether they are taking gold flits and whers at that time.

Basic Rules

  • You can get a maximum of one paid custom per month.
  • Follow all instructions in the customs thread you are posting in!
  • If it takes more than 1 month to receive your custom, the price is cut in half.
  • Please don't pester us for customs if slots aren't open. :C

Pricing

  • Adults: 200k
  • Babies (whers only): 250k
  • Eggs: 275k whers, 225k firelizards

Special Questions

  • Will custom dragon hatchlings be available?
In currently planned clutches, no, although it's possible we might have an opening or two for a customed hatchling in future. *IF* we decide to do this, there would be no more than 1-2 slots.
