As far as brightness goes though, most of his color pallette, aside from the orange on his ears/neck and some of the red in his chest, his colors aren't actually that bright in comparison to actual birds. I figured it was ok for those to be his "natural" colorings since it's based off a natural bird. It's obviously going to be toned down though when I do happen to wiggle into a custom slot 8T That's just the way of things. UPDATE

Sorry, I should have been more specific with what I told you earlier--since the bird half of gryphons are always based on birds of prey, their natural colorations are restricted to those found in hawks, eagles, owls, etc as well as pretty much any feline species. Although I think it's a great idea to use colorful birds as inspiration, those kinds of colorful markings (blue, bright red, purple, etc) are achieved through the use of dyeing. A wealthy scholar would definitely have the resources to do some extensive and elaborate fur/feather dyeing, but we'd like to avoid gryphons that appear to be 100% dyed or nearly so.

That said, your design is absolutely gorgeous--I love what you did with his tail--and I think something very similar is doable, as long as the yellow base color can be a more muted shade of yellow/cream. The rest I think is quite plausible as a dye job.

Static - Yep, pretty much! As I said, though, your design would work and I think would turn out beautifully, if the main (bright yellow) part of his body could be a little more toned down. I see no reason why you should start again from scratch!
