"LADIES AAAAND GENTLEMEN!" A booming voice cried out over a bustling city street filled with all sorts of people from all sorts of places. The voice came from a huge, stark white Colosseum at the center of the city's bustling market district. The building hadn't been used in quite a while, having sat abandoned for years. Recently though workers had been toiling away to clean and repair the broken structure and, naturally, had attracted a number of curious folk. It was to this inquisitive crowd that the voice had spoken, from an unassuming man standing in front of the Colosseum on a marble platform that looked designed to hold a statue.

"It's the moment you've all been waiting for, the BRAWLER'S BASH! It's the most exciting fighting competition we've ever had, and we're here to watch blood-spilling battle-hardened warriors duke it out until only one of them is left standing!

Are any of you brave enough to stand up to the challenge of engaging in deadly combat? Come right on up to the recruitment table, and then we'll see what you're really made of.

Would you rather watch the fighting happen? That's perfectly fine too - we don't want to horde all the entertainment for the warriors. Go by the vendors to grab some food and then find yourself a seat to watch the events.

But let me introduce you to our judges! We have been graced with the presence of the Old Gods for this event! Citlalicue, our goddess of the stars! Chandra, our lunar deity! And last, but not least, Apollo, our god of the sun!

Folks, this is an event you don't want to miss! I have a feeling some pretty spectactular things are going to happen, and it'd be such a shame for you to miss out on all the excitement. So come on in and get in on the ground floor of the first annual SDRP Summer Games!"

Welcome to this year's SDRP Summer Games where we hope to have a great turn out for some mingling and friendly competition either as part of the audience or joining the fighters in the arena. The basic setting/premise of this year's Games is a Romanesque gladiatorial match held by the Old Gods in the Beimini Colosseum within the quirky and eclectic world of Aelzwyr, a pocket dimension between worlds where lost things tend to collect. Characters from anywhere can come and watch as part of the audience or join the fight by submitting an application at the Recruiter's Table in the Contest thread.

Audience members can be and do just about anything they please (so long as they follow the ToS and Colosseum rules which boil down to 'don't be a jerk'). Whether you just want to watch the fights or explore the event grounds, audience members can enjoy the fun and laid back walk-in RP (with an actual storyline *gasp*) that will make up the framework of the event where they can cheer, jeer, and bet on the fighters, peruse the various shops in Vendor's Row, and play in the side games this fun filled event has to offer.

The main attraction will be the Fights, a scene writing competition held within Gaia's Writing Contests forum. Each contestant will submit a fighter to the Contest thread (when it's open) and once enough fighters are signed up they will be paired off to write their scenes for the competition. Our Judges will pick the winner of each fight and only the victors will be posted here.

But the fighters won't be the only ones competing. There will be a number of mini-games offered throughout the event challenging audience members with word puzzles, dice games, and tests of skill. Small prizes will be given for the mini-games and there will be awards for various bests within the audience as well.

And don't forget the shops in Vendor's Row. To encourage interaction and give the crowd something to do we've got a few vendors selling various things throughout the event. From food items to memorabilia, art shops and charity auctions to gambling, wander through Vendor's Row for your event shopping needs.

Rules

These are the basic codes of conduct within the Games. There are not many and they are very simple. Breaking these will have consequences.

1. Common Sense
Don't be an idiot. The thread starter is God. Respect him, respect each other, respect the TOS and forum rules (keep it PG-13, no spamming, no trolling, no soliciting, don't be a jerk). Don't mess it up for the rest of us and try not to do anything that would upset other people. This is a GAME after all, we're here to have fun.

2. Control
Don't control anyone else's character(s) or severely affect (maim, kill, etc) them without permission (you have permission against your opponent during fight rounds). Don't go off on an insane killing spree (without permission). Don't ruin the event so no starting a riot. Basically use some measure of self control or pay the consequences (character death/player ban).

See respective sections for specifics on how action is handled where combat and skill use is involved for Walk-ins and Competition.

3. Literacy
We write in third person, past tense, complete sentences. L33t speak, txt abbreviations, profuse slang, and generally bad grammar should not be used outside of dialog. We won't be grammar Nazis but do try to write above an 8th grade level.

If you center align long blocks of text, stretch the page, or use bright font colors I will kill your character.

See respective sections for specifics on formatting rules for Walk-ins and Competition.

4. Depth
We'd like our characters to be as real as possible. Don't just give us a vague concept, have a fleshed out person with a rich background and personality to play and try to keep it somewhat believable.

5. Commitment
We want dedicated players or at least to know how dedicated all our fighters are so we can pair them with others of the same level. Fighters will be asked how often they can check/post on their fight application, take that seriously and give us the time you sign up for. If you can't make at least one post a week you should stick to the audience and not participate in the competition. If you may have scheduling concerns you should discuss them with the Marshals when you put in your application.

6. Dependability
If you will be unable to post for a while please let anyone you have a scene with know ahead of time so they can get out of the scene if they would like to do something while you're gone. There is no formal punishment for failing to post regularly but frequent, repeated lapses will result in your character going 'in the bag' (either played by the GM as an NPC or knocked unconscious/otherwise incapacitated). Fighters will have one week after the declaration of their round to complete their fight or be disqualified.
Walk-in

Because every event needs an audience the SDRP Summer Games will be hosted inside the framework of a walk-in RP. To join the walk-in portion all you have to do is walk right in. Just like a real sporting event you'll be able to mingle with the rest of the crowd, wander about the event grounds, check out various vendors, fawn over the champions, try to scalp tickets at the gates (guards may not like this), cheer your favorite fighter, start a little fight of your own (the guards will really not like this), and occasionally the Judges may ask if a fighter should live or die. Pretty much anything you could do at a real gladiatorial fight can be done at the Summer Games (so long as you don't break the Rules).

As for your character, well, the Games are being held in a world made up of other worlds where anything can happen and anyone can fall in so your character can be from anywhere - real life, a favorite story world, an RP of your own, or someone you created just for this event. The only thing you can't play is a non-original character, let's all make our own so we don't end up fighting over popular ones.

Walk-in Guidelines:
  • Follow all Rules
  • Pay attention to event staff (they will have a special posting template) and do as they say
  • Please include a description of your character in your first post
  • Please be aware of the fights and react to them when judges declare the winner
  • No more than two images per post (this includes posting template)
  • Template images (those used in every post) may not be larger than 300 pixels in height or width
  • No image may be larger than 600 pixels in any direction (if you stretch my page you will die)

Handling Actions

In a system without stats or dice, action in which failure might occur (combat and skill use) can be tricky. For the walk-in event we'll be using a system of attempt and result where one player makes an attempt and the player of the target of that attempt declares the result. In the case of multiple targets each player gives their own character's result. Success of an attempt should be based on several factors:

1) Plausibility: could the character logically succeed given stated skills and past actions within the RP. In order to determine plausibility the player making the attempt should indicate within the attempt their character's general skill level and what they expect should happen. The target of the attempt will weigh that against their character's opposing skills and decide if the attempt was successful or not.

2) Writing: to encourage good writing, a well written attempt should push a borderline plausibility into success. Conversely, a poorly written attempt can push a borderline plausibility to fail.

3) Awesomeness: a clever, cool, humorous, or otherwise awesome attempt should push a borderline plausibility into success. A truly spectacular attempt can bend the laws of physics if well written.

4) Plot: Staff may step in at any time for the sake of the event. This should not be a common occurance but it may happen.

Please do not expect every attempt to succeed but also do not deny every attempt made against you.

When to Do It
This system should be used whenever there is a real chance of failure. Don't bother with things that should obviously succeed and don't challenge other players (archer hitting a haybale) but do use it when:

1) Any combat situation (except for Competition fights): if you didn't make the character you can't control how it reacts to an attack

2) Other opposition: sneaking past guards, picking pockets, anything the other character(s) should be allowed a chance to prevent

If PvP situations get out of hand the Staff will step in and settle it. Please be mature enough to not let this happen. That means not making a PvP situation disruptive to other walk-in players. Otherwise, have the funsies.

How to Do It
To make an attempt one player states an action with open ended vocabulary and an indication of skill level/expected results. Then the target of that attempt replies:

Quote:
Player 1: The squire made a desperate lunge with her sword, aiming for the bandit's heart. If it landed this would be her first blood.
Player 2: Luck was not with her today though and the bandit parried her blade, stepping to the side with an experienced thrust of his knife toward her belly - left exposed from the lunge.
Player 1: The squire hissed a curse as she felt the bite of the blade but had managed to move enough it wasn't a lethal wound. Beginning to question her reasons for this fight, the squire lashed at the bandit with her sword.

Note the outcome is not stated by Player 1, only the action. Also note the word 'desperate' and mention of first blood which indicate the squire is an inexperienced fighter. Player 2 follows with the result of the attempt and adds his own using the word 'experienced' to indicate his bandit is more skilled. Player 1 then gives a result and reacts with a new attempt. Since the respective levels of their fighting skills are already established further mention of her inexperience is unnecessary though she is doubting herself by now.
Competition

The main event will be the fighting/writing competition held within Gaia's Writing Contests forum which pits players against each other to write the best fight given the paired characters.

The fights will consist of several elimination rounds, each with different twists and conditions to make them interesting, until there is only one fighter left standing. Rounds will be carefully matched and given out by the Announcer. Early rounds will be broken into various brackets (magic-users, non-magic, realistic) to help balance fighters from varied backgrounds and power levels. Each round's specific rules will not be pre-planned but given out when the fighters are paired and shall be appropriate for both characters (not going to put a kung fu master against a spindly wizard and then restrict magic).

We're still taking ideas on the round specifics but a few we've got so far are: restrict magic use, lions (or other animals) in the ring, restrict weapons, spinning cage fight (gravity shifts), team fights, chariot fight, Kraken fight (flooded arena), anti-gravity fight, and various setting changes/obstacles.

See the Competition Details post of the Contest thread for more specific information.
Application

ALL Fighters must turn in an Application. If you do not apply (or your application is not approved) you are not allowed to compete. At the beginning of the event, fighters must sign up by filling out and submitting the Fighter Application to the Contest thread.

This application is the Fighter's character submission and will be used to pair them with other, fairly evenly matched, fighters. Each fighter player will need to read their opponent's application closely to be able to write that character decently well. Judges will determine fight winners based on technical writing ability, style, and how well both characters are portrayed given their applications.

Pay attention to the Marshals and do as they say. The Marshals are the event staff that will be accepting Fighters. If a Marshal suggests a change to your application you may not be allowed to fight unless that change is made. Marshals will only suggest changes to help your character or to balance them with the rest of the fighters. Once a Marshal accepts your application you may mingle with the crowd or other fighters until your fight is declared. Pay attention to announcements as that is where fights will be declared.
Rewards

Competition Prizes
The grand prize of this year's Summer Games will go to the event's Champion - the final winner of the writing competition. Along with the title of Champion, the winner will receive: a full color digital artwork commission from SDRP's resident artist (umbraja), 100,000g, and first pick from our Prize Pool Items.

There will also be a finalist and two semi-finalists in the fights who will receive small character sketches or pixel art from resident artists (umbraja and Venom), a pick at the Prize Pool Items, and 50,000g.

But those aren't the only prizes to be had. The winner of each round in the writing competition will be gifted with a small token prize (probably a cupcake) and stat bonuses to be added to their character's stats for use in later rounds. Some rounds may also award in-game items (potions and weapons) to be used in later rounds or other prizes. Judges may also award characters with Divine Blessings (stat bonuses, items, spells, whatever they come up with) for exemplary performance. All these rewards will help your character's chances of winning the grand prize and any character that survives (or is resurrected) can come back next time we hold the Games with all the bonuses earned.

And now what you've all been waiting for - the Prize Pool. These are the items we will be offering as prizes for the various awards. The numbers in ( ) indicate how many of the item we currently have on hand and the listed prices are rounded approximations of the average market value at the time we looked it up.

Rather than assigning a specific item to each award we're gong to let the winners pick from this list. Prize selection will be on a first come first serve basis (unless otherwise noted in the award).

If you're feeling generous and happen to have one of these items (or gold or anything really) please send it to the SDRP mule (School Of Dedicated RPers) so that we can add it to our Prize Pool.

Event Staff

Event Staff will be made up of SDRP members who've graciously volunteered their time to make this event a success. If you would like to be one of the Staff members submit the appropriate application to the Summer Event Discussion thread in the guild's main forum.

Marshals
Marshals are past Champions in the ring that will be getting us started off by running the Recruitment Table to sign up the fighters and make sure they aren't completely out of balance. Once the fights start the Marshals' job changes to keeping the fighters in line and making sure they get their fights written on time. (May be combined with Guards if not enough volunteer.)

  • Cedric Ardent (Mr. Blackbird Lore): It's not hard to guess why they asked this two-time champion to oversee the new fighters: just look at that face!

  • Sir Alexander (Ivaylo_Sai): Protector of the Innocent, Slayer of Bears, Keeper of the Juice, Rider of Lightning, Taster of the Dead - Alex may look like the quintessential knight in shining armor but there's more (or less) to him than meets the eye.

Guards
As the title suggests, the Guards are exactly that, security guards that run the event's security to make sure everyone is following the rules and getting along. This may or may not be a busy position (depending on the players) but it does require a lot of commitment as you'll need to be vigilant. It will also require a lot of tact and good people skills so keep that in mind. (May be combined with Guards if not enough volunteer.)

  • Allegra Sinclair (..s.k.i.t.t.l.e.s..): If folks get out of line, this girl's got a swift kick in their backside waiting and they won't even see it coming.

  • Jason Kharo (Jason Kharo): This one keeps himself to himself and never lets out why he is here or where he came from. He is a highly trained and expert operative, a match for any martial art master in hand to hand, and with 20/10 eyesight, his rounds are always on target.

  • Riven (Riv) Fannars (Watervoir): Want your daily dose of fun? Riv Fannars is your man - and more. This year, he is tasked with the job of policing the crowd and enforcing the rules. Don't go too far and he won't have to freeze your pretty face in place.

  • Sage Proctor (Kage Tsukuyomi): More playful than he looks, don't be alarmed if this one decides to tickle your brain with a stick of pocky.

Announcer
Responsible for introducing the fights (giving out the pairings and twists) and announcing the winners, the Announcer is the voice of the Games

  • Captain (School Of Dedicated RPers): Humble servant of the gods.

Judges
The Old Gods will be deciding who wins and loses.

  • Citlalicue (Isa-sama): Goddess of earth, death, and the Milky Way.

  • Chandra Soma (Jikial): Illustrious god of the moon.

  • Apollo (umbraja): Golden god of the sun.

Vendors

To encourage interaction and give the crowd something to do we've got a few vendors selling various things throughout the event. From food items to memorabilia, art shops to gambling, wander through Vendor's Row for your event shopping needs.

Go Elsewhere
The Games' official Travel Agent. Because sometimes life gets boring and you just need to Go Elsewhere.

  • Umbraja (umbraja): a well traveled adventurer with a sultry smile and quick draw, just the sort you'd want to show you around the wilds of the multiverse.

Lady Luck
The Games' official Bookie. What's a sporting event without a little shady gambling going on?

  • Tigris Altacia (Tigris_Altacia): more than just a pretty face, this kitty will take your money and hand it up to Fate.

Gods Gift
The Games' official Charity Auction. Give back and get back! We are as a god when it comes to turning items into gold!

  • Jikial (Jikial): almost aggressively easy-going, this joker likes to be the center of attention.

Lockley Concessions
Cheering on your favourite fighter, or fighting the good fight itself, is bound to work up an appetite! Silence that grumbling tummy and drop on by Lockley Concessions! Where the food is good, the service has a smile, and the prices are as competitive as the competition it caters to!

  • Kieran Lockley (EmpyreanFlight): A goofy, laid-back young man who's main goal in life is to smile, and bake. Lots and lots of baking.

  • Katarina Lockley (EmpyreanFlight): A cheery, friendly, but determined chef whose patience runs near infinite. Unless it's her brother.

We would like several more Vendors so if you have a shop or idea for something to sell please volunteer by submitting the following application to the Volunteer thread in the guild's main forum.

"Come one, come all to the Summer Games - now open to the public!" the announcer bellowed again calling the crowd into the Colosseum. "Just take a stroll right in and see what we've got to offer here. Fighters step up to the Recruitment Table and put in your applications. If you've got something to sell or just looking to buy take a stroll to Vendors Row. If you're here to watch, well this is a spectator sport so head on in and get to spectating!" The little man grinned, waving a hand over the gathered crown and motioning them in toward the Colosseum behind him.

It looked to be the start of a good day, maybe a little hot and humid but not overly bright - not really bright at all. The sky was covered in light purple clouds that seemed almost to glow a bit in soft dawny colors. The purple twilight was augmented by floating globes of dripping liquid light that hung in the air scattered throughout the courtyard and Colosseum, just out of reach for most. Droplets of glittering light speckled the ground beneath them and tracked off in every direction on the footprints of those that walked below. And there were many of every shape, size, color, and kind that trailed that powdered glow. It was a beautifully strange sight for most of the crowd but then this was obviously a different world from their own for more than just the lights and misty sky. The Colosseum may have been like something some worlds could have held but the myriad mix of other structures around it paired with the people and creatures mingling about was, well, uncommon in the least.

The milling crowd in the courtyard was a true sampling of the multiverse. An old woman waddled with her basket of fresh baked bread clutched in scaly arms. A young boy laughed, tail wagging happily as he chased a flitting fairy through the corridors. A centaur couple looked at the potted dryads ringing the market's fountain in disdain as an intelligent shade of blue played bebop jazz in front of a corner cafe. People from everywhere and everywhen had gathered to the Games. Tourists to see the sights, business folk breaking their busy routine, and wandering travelers alike mingled in the plaza at the base of the Romanesque Colosseum.

The courtyard around the ancient arena was flanked by a modern high rise on one side and a Japanese pagoda on the other. German half timbers mixed with southwestern adobe and patched tin shanties ringing the courtyard edged in tent stalls of every color to make a bustling street market selling all manner of things from meat on sticks to glowing jewels and dragon's eggs. The tall spires of some Gothic cathedral could be seen over the rooftops of the strange city beyond the Colosseum ground and farther out was a lush tropical jungle that sloped down into the crystal waters of an endless sea. Boats of all makes dotted the frothy waves, from four masted galleys to jet skis and sleek yachts.

But what was truly amazing was what hung above the water. From most of the Colosseum grounds it looked like simply a distant mountain range but from a higher vantage, one that saw over the buildings and rooftops, those mountains proved to be a massive island floating in the misty sky between the clouds and sea. Smaller islands floated around it, making a stair-like archipelago that climbed to the top of the handing landmass where whole nations kept cities in the sky.

Those that had come here from other worlds had come by simple ways, answering invitations or having purchased tickets in their own world, then followed directions to a remote street corner or alleyway where they'd turned the unfamiliar path to find themselves walking out into this strange place. The tickets had called it the Beimini Colosseum, a grand spectacle on a paradise isle which promised the time of their lives.

"Fresh fruits! Fresh and ripe, ready to eat! And did I mention they're fresh?"

"I'll take that one." A man with a surfer's build lifted his shades an inch now that he was under the cover of the fruit merchant's tent. With the other hand, he'd pointed at a particular basket of fruit, which the merchant then wrapped up and charged him handsomely for. Which was perfectly okay because not a coin of that cash was coming out of Riv Fannars' pockets. Oh no, he was a guard in Aelzwyr's Summer Games, meaning that he had a virtually unlimited credit that was supplied to him by the heads in charge. Job benefits.

Besides, he reasoned as he took the basket under an arm and started making his way to the Beimini Colosseum, these fruits weren't just for him. Okay, maybe just this one banana he was going to nab and finish before he arrived at the grounds that no one was going to find out about. But the rest were going to the spectators, the audience to the grand show. And that star judge Citlalicue and cookin' hot concessions chef, Katarina. Oh yes. If there was one thing Riv was going to enjoy in this event, it was going to be the girls.

It was with that thought in mind that he strolled past the bellowing announcer and into the area laid row by row with Recruitment Tables, an eager eye constantly darting towards the females in the room, both fighter and not.

"Riv Fannars, signing into guard duty," he told the people at the door, a charming smile illuminating his features as he dropped a banana peel into a dustbin.
A young blonde girl sighed as she walked around the vendors area. Her dirty blonde hair was cut short and her bangs did nothing to hide her sharp blue eyes. This girl's name was Juno Galladeigh, and she was trying to keep herself from signing up at the Recruitment Stand. I am not allowed to get myself into trouble. I am not allowed to get myself into trouble. I am simply here because...heck if I know. She did know, actually. A man by the name of Willam McFadden was said to be participating, and honestly, she wanted to cheer on a man from her homeworld. It didn't matter whether or not they were on the same side of the fight back home, what mattered was that he didn't make a complete mockery of their world with a crappy fight.

It helped that she was pretty sure that the gods (as well as the Marshalls) wouldn't tolerate death outside the arena...probably.

She had three small round red and white bulbs hanging from her belt loop as well as a slingshot. On the other side of the belt loop was a handgun and small bag of marbles. Her boots were well used, and her khaki pants were slightly dirty from use. She wore a simple black t-shirt with a blue and white bandana around her neck. "At least it's gonna be entertaining," she muttered to herself. It was the only thing that would keep her from going crazy with the urge to prove herself in the ring.

She walked by the Recruitment Table, and with a bit more difficulty than she thought she'd had, she turned away and stared walking into the Colosseum. I might as well get a look around the area before the fights starts.

Maybe her blonde hair made her stand out. Maybe it was the fact that it was short that caught his attention. It might have been the fierce look in her eyes, that burning desire he could see churning in her blue eyes that had to be redirected away from the recruitment tables. Or perhaps it was just that she so happen to be entering the Colosseum just seconds after he did.

"Hey there, beautiful." He greeted her with a charming smile and a bow before offering her a round apple to take. This wasn't the first time he'd pulled this stunt, and so far his results had always been mixed. He wondered what kind of reaction this lovely being would reward his efforts with. It wasn't obvious, but he had an eye on the array of weapons that hung at her belt.
