The Uktena Pack has been native to Evergreen Forest for centuries now and have developed a reputation on being, ‘top dog’. These wolves definitely take care of their own and will kick anybody’s tail for messing with them. The Uktena Pack is a rather trusting pack, having a reputation for accepting outsiders and rogues into their pack. They’re naturally forgiving and believe that every wolf deserves a second chance, and they pride themselves on being a sanctuary for the forgotten and troubled. Since they are the only established wolf pack inhabiting Evergreen Forest their numbers are big and prey is wealthy and abundant.

The Tolinka Band is your typical Coyote Band, ruthless, vicious, lazy, and vindictive. They have been stalking the local wolf pack for years now, and have been lucking out on some truly exquisite delicacies. The Tolinka are known as the Forest's antagonists, no one fears them yet... they are always known and more or less hated. They love to annoy, bug, and perhaps even injure wolves who get in their way, by constantly following them around and trying to steal their kills and just basically being pests! The deer don't particularly are fond of the smaller beasts either.

o1. Would we accept other species into the RP. [ex. foxes, bears or elk.]

Unfortunately I am leaning towards no, not for a while at least. I believe that it will not be a good idea because of the lack of interaction that would be available to a rouge animal. If we allow one animal, we would have to accept more of it's kind like a mate and possible offspring. This would make the RP chaotic, and some what confusing. Bit if you can convince me... please do.

Social Hierarchy
Wolf packs are often portrayed as strictly hierarchical social structures with a breeding "alpha" pair which climbs the social ladder through fighting, followed by subordinate "beta" wolves and a low ranking "omega" which bears the brunt of the pack's aggression.

Courtship/Breeding
Mated pairs usually remain together for life if one of the wolves does not die. Upon the death of one mated wolf, pairs are quickly re-established. Since males often predominate in any given wolf population, unpaired females are a rarity. Polygamy does occur, but primarily in captive situations. Multiple litters are rarely successful, due to infanticide by the pack's females. The age of first breeding in wolves depends largely on environmental factors; when food is abundant, or when wolf populations are heavily managed, wolves can rear pups at younger ages in order to exploit the newly available resources. Captive wolves have been known to breed as soon as they reach 9–10 months, while the youngest recorded breeding wolves in the wild were 2 years old. The average litter consists of 5–6 pups. Litters of 14–17 occur 1% of the time. Litter sizes tend to increase in areas where prey is abundant. Wolves bear relatively large pups in small litters compared to other canid species. The gestation period lasts 62–75 days, with pups usually being born in the summer period

Body Language
Postural communication in wolves is composed of a variety of facial expressions, tail positions and piloerection. Aggressive or self assertive wolves are characterized by their slow and deliberate movements, high body posture and raised hackles, while submissive ones carry their bodies low, sleeken their fur and lower their ears and tail. When breeding males encounter subordinate family members, they may stare at them, standing erect and still with their tails horizontal to their spine. The pre-caudal scent glands may play a role in expressing aggression, as combative wolves will raise the base of their tails whilst drooping the tip, thus positioning the scent glands at the highest point. Two forms of submissive behavior are recognized: passive and active. Passive submission usually occurs as a reaction to the approach of a dominant animal, and consists of the submissive wolf lying partly on its back and allowing the dominant wolf to sniff its anogenital area. Active submission occurs often as a form of greeting, and involves the submissive wolf approaching another in a low posture, and licking the other wolf's face.

Hunting and Feeding Behaviours
When hunting, wolves will attempt to conceal themselves as they approach their prey. With ungulate herds, they then either attempt to break up the herd, or isolate one or two animals from it. If the targeted animal stands its ground, the wolves either ignore it, or try to intimidate it into running. When chasing small prey, wolves will attempt to catch up with their prey as soon as possible. With larger animals, the chase is prolonged, in order to wear the selected prey out. Wolves usually give up chases after 1–2 km , though one wolf was recorded to chase a deer for 21 km. Sometimes, a single wolf will distract the herd with its presence, acting as a decoy, while its pack mates attack from behind.

Mature wolves usually avoid attacking large prey frontally, instead focusing on the rear and sides of the animal. They kill large prey by biting large chunks of flesh from the soft perineum area, causing massive blood loss. Such bites can cause wounds 10–15 cm in length, with three such bites to the perineum usually being sufficient to bring down a large deer in optimum health. When attacking moose, they occasionally bleed it to death by biting its soft nose. With medium-sized prey such as roe deer or sheep, northern wolves kill by biting the throat, severing nerve tracks and the carotid artery, thus causing the animal to die within a few seconds to a minute

The breeding pair typically monopolizes food in order to continue producing pups. When food is scarce, this is done at the expense of other family members, especially pups. This is in marked contrast to the feeding behaviours of some other canids like dholes, who give priority to their pups when feeding. The breeding pair typically eats first, though as it is they who usually work the hardest in killing prey, they may rest after a long hunt and allow the rest of the family to eat unmolested. Once the breeding pair has finished eating, the rest of the family will tear off pieces of the carcass and transport them to secluded areas where they can eat in peace. Wolves typically commence feeding by consuming the larger internal organs of their prey, such as the heart, liver, lungs and stomach lining. The kidneys and spleen are eaten once they are exposed, followed by the muscles.

Howling
Wolves howl to assemble the pack (usually before and after hunts), to pass on an alarm (particularly at a den site), to locate each other during a storm or unfamiliar territory and to communicate across great distances. Male wolves give voice through an octave, passing to a deep bass with a stress on "O", while females produce a modulated nasal baritone with stress on "U". Pups almost never howl, while yearling wolves produce howls ending in a series of dog-like yelps. Howls used for calling pack mates to a kill are long, smooth sounds similar to the beginning of the cry of a horned owl. When pursuing prey, they emit a higher pitched howl, vibrating on two notes. When closing in on their prey, they emit a combination of a short bark and a howl. When howling together, wolves harmonize rather than chorus on the same note, thus creating the illusion of there being more wolves than there actually are. Lone wolves typically avoid howling in areas where other packs are present. Wolves do not respond to howls in rainy weather and when satiated

Enemies and Competitors
Wolves typically dominate other canid species in areas where they both occur. Incidences of wolves killing coyotes are common, with such incidences being especially common in winter, when coyotes feed on wolf kills. Wolves may attack coyote den sites, digging out and killing the pups. They rarely eat the coyotes they kill. There are no records of coyotes killing wolves, though coyotes may chase wolves if they outnumber them.
Note: Cougars and Bears may be a threat to the wolves as well.




Description
The color of the coyote's pelt varies from grayish-brown to yellowish-gray on the upper parts, while the throat and belly tend to have a buff or white color. The forelegs, sides of the head, muzzle and paws are reddish-brown. The back has tawny-colored underfur and long, black-tipped guard hairs that form a black dorsal stripe and a dark cross on the shoulder area. The black-tipped tail has a scent gland located on its dorsal base. Coyotes shed once a year, beginning in May with light hair loss, ending in July after heavy shedding. They are much smaller than wolf!

Social Hierarchy
Though coyotes have been observed to travel in large groups, they primarily hunt in pairs. Typical packs consist of six, closely related adults, yearlings and young. Coyote packs are generally smaller than wolf packs, and associations between individuals are less stable, thus making their social behavior more in line with that of the dingo. In theory, this is due to an earlier expression of aggression, and the fact that coyotes reach their full growth in their first year, unlike wolves, which reach it in their second.

Courtship and Breeding
Once a female coyote chooses a partner, the mated pair may remain temporarily monogamous for a number of years. Litter size ranges from one to 19 pups; the average is six. These large litters act as compensatory measures against the high juvenile mortality rate – about 50–70% of pups do not survive to adulthood. Male pups will disperse from their dens between months six and 9, while females usually remain with the parents and form the basis of the pack. The pups attain full growth between 9 and 12 months old. Sexual maturity is reached by 12 months. Unlike wolves, mother coyotes will tolerate other lactating females in their pack.

Communication
The calls a coyote makes are high-pitched and variously described as howls, yips, yelps, and barks. These calls may be a long rising and falling note (a howl) or a series of short notes (yips). These calls are most often heard at dusk or night, but may sometimes be heard in the day, even in the middle of the day. Although these calls are made throughout the year, they are most common during the spring mating season and in the fall when the pups leave their families to establish new territories. When a coyote calls its pack together, it howls at one high note. When the pack is together, it howls higher and higher, and then they yip and yelp and also do a yi-yi sound, very shrill, with the howl.

Diet and Hunting
Coyotes are opportunistic, versatile carnivores with a 90% mammalian diet, depending on the season. They primarily eat small mammals, such as voles, prairie dogs, eastern cottontails, ground squirrels, and mice. The coyote will also target any species of bird that nests on the ground. Though they will consume large amounts of carrion, they tend to prefer fresh meat. Fruits and vegetables are a significant part of the coyote's diet in the autumn and winter months. Part of the coyote's success as a species is its dietary adaptability.

Coyotes shift their hunting techniques in accordance with their prey. When hunting small animals such as mice, they slowly stalk through the grass, and use their acute sense of smell to track down the prey. When the prey is located, the coyotes stiffen and pounce on the prey in a cat-like manner. Coyotes will commonly work in teams when hunting large ungulates such as deer, which is more common in winter (when large prey is likely weakened) and in larger-bodied northern coyotes. Coyotes may take turns in baiting and pursuing the deer to exhaustion, or they may drive it towards a hidden member of the pack. When attacking large prey, coyotes attack from the rear and the flanks of their prey. Occasionally, they also grab the neck and head, pulling the animal down to the ground. Coyotes are persistent hunters, with successful attacks sometimes lasting as long as 21 hours; even unsuccessful ones can continue more than eight hours before the coyotes give up. Depth of snow can affect the likelihood of a successful kill. Packs of coyotes can bring down prey as large as adult elk, which often weigh over 250 kg (550 lbs) or more than 15 times the weight of a fairly large coyote.

Although, Coyote's much rather take the lazy approach and follow the wolves around to eat their fallen prey. They are 'pests' so to speak.

Wolves

Alpha Pair

Leaders of the pack, the highest ranking wolves. They take care of the pack and are faced with making some life-threatening decisions that could ultimately change the fate of the entire pack. Decisions such as promotions, mating and anything important such as that are always made by the Alphas. The Beta's may bring a situation to light to the Alpha's but the end result is always of the two in charge. Generally the Alpha male has more pull in authority than the Alpha female.

Beta Pair

The Deputies of the pack, when the Alpha’s aren’t around this pair run the ship and make sure everything runs smoothly. Betas usually assist in making any major decisions that have to deal with the pack as a whole. At least one of the beta's are quite close with at least one of the Alpha's. Sometimes a mate may be chosen by the current beta in charge, being as it was spoken over with the Alpha of course.

Delta

Deltas are in charge of the hunters, they encourage the hunter ranked wolves to work to their best ability but also training them and giving young hunters lessons they need to succeed. Usually in order to become a Delta a wolf would have to have gained the hunter position at first and then be promoted by one of the Alphas.

Hunters

They take special care by going out and fetching food for the pack. The hunters usually have a ‘alpha hunter’ to look after them, just to make sure everything goes well. The alpha hunter will often report to the Gammas for annual reports.

Zeta

Zetas are in charge of the warriors, they encourage the warrior ranked wolves to work to their best ability but also taking the time to train them and giving young warrior lessons they need to succeed. Usually in order to become a Zeta a wolf would have to have gained the warrior position at first and then be promoted by one of the Alphas of the pack.

Warriors

They protect the pack with their brute strength and cunning. If a battle is to be fought or if an enemy is near these are the guys that are to usually take care of them. Warriors are usually the front line of an ambush if one were to be taking place.

Iota

Iota are in charge of the scouts, they encourage the scout ranked wolves to work to their best ability but also taking the time to train them and giving young scouts lessons they need to succeed. Usually in order to become a Iota a wolf would have to have gained the scout position at first and then be promoted by one of the Alphas of the pack.

Scouts

They’re in charge of protecting the territory by doing patrols. Alpha’s may also hire Scouts to spy on pack members, or maybe even other packs.

Shaman

The healer, the storyteller, and spiritual leader of the pack. He is in charge of all the healers in the pack.

Healer

Wise beyond their years when it comes to the health of the wolves. These special wolves were handpicked by the shaman to serve him and help him take care of the pack.

Subordinates

Just ordinary pack members with no specific role or status in the pack.

Nursers

Wolves that look after pups if the parents are busy, may also be known as sitters or providers.

Elders

Older wolves that have gotten too old to accompany hunts or do menial tasks around the den site. They usually stay with the pups and their mothers.

Neophyte

The apprentices. When a young wolf reached two years old they become a Neophyte to train as either a scout, hunter, nurser, healer or a warrior. They train for at least one year before they are given a formal mission to prove themselves to the pack, which in turn may ultimately gain them the rank they so desire.

Yearling

Wolves that have reached one year old. Still technically pups, but they are allowed more freedom in the pack and are just now learning the basics of survival.

Omega

The omega is at the lowest ranking animal in the pack and will submit to almost every member of their pack. The omega feeds last and is often an outlet for the frustration of other members, as they are someone that can be safely snarled and snapped at occasionally. However, the omega plays an important role in the pack by acting as a kind of social glue, allowing frustration to be vented without actual acts of war, which could threaten the pack structure.

Outsiders

Wolves who are not yet apart of the pack, who may be inspiring to become part of the pack.


Exiled

Wolves that have done hanis crimes, an example of such would be murdering pups, or any pack member in cold blood. More often than not, the alphas would mark an exiled wolf in a well known fashion, such as a torn ear, chunk of meat from the base of their tail, something that won't as easily grow back. Being an exile is a life of solitude, if they were to try and join their former pack again it wouldn't happen, they would be chased out. If they were to attempt to join another pack it may be a very difficult joining for they will know the marks mean. Life will be very hard for an exiled wolf, they will most likely die alone.

Coyotes

Sigmas

They are the scouts of the pack, they are highly appreciated, more so than the hunters because the Sigmas track the land for days on end to find out where all the best kills are or where the wolves are moving. They know everything, and spy on everyone.

Hunters

If the pack is unable to gain a free meal elsewhere these ranked coyotes will hunt smaller game, sometimes more than one at a time depending on how big the group is to feed their pack. Coyotes are big on sharing.

Chars

Chars are coyotes who do the healing within the pack, they care for those who are injured with their vast knowledge of healing tactics. They are just like the healers within the wolf pack.

Sitters

Basically are the coyotes that stay behind and look after the pups when the parents are busy.

Apprentices

In the town of Ely, two werewolf packs live in an almost constant state of war with each other. SilverBlood is more traditional and wishes to live quietly alongside humans. Black Forest is a younger pack, and much more troublesome. The packs have never agreed on anything and as snoopy humans and loner werewolves cause even more trouble they must fight to stay hidden and thrive in this small town.

The Uktena pack had been living in their territory for a while, Faux dealing with both the death of his alpha female, Granite, in which was murdered by the head of the Tolinka coyote band, Fierce; and the disappearance, and presumed death, of his sister, Aurora. In the Tolinka Band, Fierce had just become Alpha after murdering Rioh as her counterpart at the time Alistair chased Zeke out, he was to murder the Alpha but didn't which soon was found out by the self proclaimed Alphaess and she soon wanted nothing to do with him anymore so he left the band. Once taken over Fierce had her mind set on Hawk as her new mate, after she nearly immediately got over both Zeke and Alistair. However, he too disappeared soon after her feelings started to grow. A year and a half had passed after they since the pack and band's troublesome times and since the move from their original densite, things were finally starting to get back to normal up until a fire broke out, set by humans, in the forest. Both the Uktena pack and the Tolinka band were forced to relocate. Both had to cross a dangerous river. Finally, the two thought they had found a safe place to get away from the fire, but during their rest that night, the fire caught up to them.

In a panic, the Tolinka band and Uktena pack dispersed, unable to stay together in the thickening smoke. During this time, Russia, one of the warriors came face to face with Fierce, the leader of the Tolinka band. Russia was injured by the other, but was helped out by Revan, another Uktena warrior as he hit Fierce hard enough to knock her against a tree, causing the evil leader to retreat, quite injured herself. Another group found a lone pup, Moon Lily, and took her under their wing in order to save her from the terror that was roaring through the forest. Faux, the leader of the Uktena pack had been separated from everyone except a scout, Venus, who had saved his life when pushing him from beneath a falling, burning tree. Venus had helped the pack cross the river and was now leading him through part of the territory that wasn't normally explored. The two encountered three different coyotes, but no violence was taken against them all as they silently worked together to get out of danger. For it was the right thing to do at the time.

Finally, Faux found a new place to call home and howled to his dispersed pack to gather. Likewise, the coyotes finally found one another, with the help of Cortes' yips and hollers while the Alphaess rested from her severe injury, and called a new territory their home to the east of where the wolf pack had settled. Each territory ended where the mountain stream ran across the land they now called home. It took a week for them to call the place home and finally feel as if they belonged. Faux promoted two wolves, Raife to beta, after losing Nel, the previous Beta in the run from the fire, and Revan to Zeta. Then, a celebratory hunt was called where Raife was to lead the group. They were able to bring down a female moose and drag it back to the pack in order to celebrate. Fierce promoted Brisbane to Gamma Female, the coyote who worked hard to scout for the band and found their resting place before the second fire after crossing the river.
