                In Memory OF
                Sometimes in life, things happen we don't always want to see. This idea that the world can be a sad and frightening place is a core principal in this role-play. However, in this world of fantasy, it is only fiction. But for some of us, this sadness becomes reality. During the development of this role-play, one of our members lost someone very dear to her: her grandfather. He was a Vietnam War veteran, whose last requests in hospice were to get laid and have a beer. He was a good man who led a good life and died too young. In honor and memory of him, I'd like to dedicate this role-play to Invisible Silver_Wings' grandfather: Gene, and I'd like everyone to enjoy this role-play and each other as best we can, and make this role-play truly something special. Sometimes life can be sad, and that's why we invented role-plays, because sometimes life can be an adventure you can only imagine.

                ♠♠♠ＰＵＮＣＴＵＡＬＩＴＹ

                If you ever look up the words “punctual” or “punctuality” in the dictionary you may come across something like this: “strict observance in keeping engagements; promptness.” Essentially what this means is that you show up. In role-playing punctuality is very important because if the members of a role-play do not attend the role-play then the role-play will die. For this reason it is the very first rule on this list and the most important. All members of this role-play must post regularly in the IC and OOC forum. Activity in both threads is very important for the survival of this role-play. So, that means, if you are the type to post in the IC thread regularly, but prefer to be anti-social when it comes to the OOC, this is NOT the role-play for you. Otherwise, I guarantee if you keep up in posts in the IC thread and are regularly active in the OOC thread you will be greatly rewarded with an amazing role-play. Also, while on the topic of the OOC thread, I'd like to keep as much OOC chat out of the IC thread as possible (light comments about your post are okay though.) I am putting up a set-number on how long you can be inactive before I begin hunting you down. If you are inactive for two weeks, without word, then I will give you a warning. During this warning, if your character is in the way of anyone else making a post, I will puppet them out of the way. After a three week period, and I still have no word, I will ban you from the role-play and delete your characters, killing them off within the story accordingly if I have to, or replacing them with an NPC where necessary.

                ♠♠♠ＧＡＩＡ ＴＯＳ

                When all of us joined Gaia Online we agreed to Gaia Online’s Terms of Service. If you disobey the Terms of Service then you will be reported. This includes, but is not limited to: Flaming, Spamming, and Cybering. As for all other things concerning the Gaia TOS, the best thing you can do is read the document for yourself to understand what it includes.

                ♠♠♠ＬＩＴＥＲＡＣＹ

                This role-play will be identified as “Lazy Literate.” This essentially means you have a basic understanding of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and the English language as a whole. It also means that you do not have to write a great deal in a post, only what you are comfortable with. However, I’d like to let you know now that this is a VERY large role-play with a grand cast of characters and substantial territory to cover. So if everyone posted with every character every day then the role-play would probably progress a ridiculous amount of pages each day. We all have lives, so I do not expect this to happen, I only expect regular attendance. So, for the purposes of the role-play each post should be a minimum of two paragraphs and you should post at least once every few days. At this rate, the role-play should flow at a steady pace and no one has to feel pressured when writing their post.

                ♠♠♠ＧＯＤ - ＭＯＤＤＩＮＧ

                I never really understood why this needs to be mentioned, but it does because many people seem to forget about it. It is simply a matter of respect towards our fellow role-players to always give them a chance to respond and to allow each other to have a fair chance in drama, fighting, etc. So the things you cannot do primarily are Auto-hitting, God-Modding, and Auto-playing. You should already know what this entails, but if you're not sure you can ask me and I will explain. One thing I would like to point out is that Auto-hitting and God-modding do not only apply to aggressors. If someone is trying to use their psychic powers on you, chances are it's going to have some kind of effect, you are not going to always be invulnerable to it and unless something is in your profile stating why you are able to resist you probably aren't going to be able to do so easily. This is just one of many examples as to how a Defender can God-mod.

                ♠♠♠ＭＡＴＵＲＩＴＹ

                This role-play will include a great many subjects that are probably not considered appropriate for children so don’t let your children read this *nod*. Really, I mention this because this is a VERY mature role-play. Sex, drug & alcohol abuse, blood &gore, politicking, war, and a great many more subjects all will have prevalence in this RP at some point. Now, we may not go into explicit detail about some things. Cybering is against Gaia’s ToS so that will NOT be occurring however a time-skip that implies a sexual act may occur. Blood and gore is something that will likely be more prevalent, and don’t worry, you don’t have to have a deep understanding of politics, economics, and war to understand this role-play. All characters are still available to you, but do understand that politics, war, and even economics will take place. Just keep all this in mind when deciding whether or not you want to join this role-play or not. If you are not comfortable with the subject matter then I urge you to look elsewhere.

                1356 A.F.: The Shaysaren Rebellion

                Avilion, the most powerful kingdom in the Eastern Expanse, is undergoing a cultural revolution. Inventions such as the printing press and faster naval vessels have allowed trade to flourish and the flow of information to travel freely and easily between the kingdoms of Vanaryth, Avilion, and the Darujian Empire. With this wealth of information, new ideas are arising amongst the nobility, and the middle-class. With this cultural revolution, the nobility have somewhat lightened their “hold” on the common people and many low-class citizens are finding themselves able to buy their way into the middle class and start new lives for their families. And as the low-class rises, so does the spread of new ideas within their ranks. Avilion hasn’t seen better days in centuries, but as the old adage goes, “against the Fall, we are but Dust.” No one could see or stop the atrocities that were to follow.

                As citizens of the lower-class became more aware, they began to see the world beyond its face value. At this time, the nobility only numbered 5% of the total population and within the Aristocracy there was no representation for the rights of low-class citizens. When some citizens rose into the middle-class, they began to see clearly the injustices that had been done to their families for so long. They saw how their families had been treated like dirt and tools, products to be used and not human beings. They would become angry and soon, rebellion would rise in the Capital. Within Shaysaren, a leadership began to form and in secret, they spread their ideas of revolution in the Kingdom throughout the city and gathered many laborers and other low-class citizens into their ranks to form a small army. In only a few short months, they were ready to challenge the city itself.

                One night, the Rebel Army made up of bandits, laborers, thieves, b*****d sons, and many more hid in the sewers of the city. When they could see the moon through the sewer grates they rose up and flooded the streets of the Upper City where the nobility of the city kept their mansions. They raided the homes of the nobility and ransacked the shops of the Upper City. The city guard fought back, but the attack was unpredictable and these warriors were completely unprepared. The Rebel Army slaughtered them, and moved on into the mansions after humiliating their corpses. In their bloodlust and anger, the rebel army became a savage horde, many men raping the nobility’s women and their children. Later there would be stories of how some nobles were ripped apart limb by limb until the only recognizable parts of their bodies’ were their fingers. Some of the Rebel Army were able to stop themselves and dropped their weapons and ran in horror, but the rest kept moving through the Upper City until they reached the castle.

                The Castle Guard had already gotten word of what was going on in the Upper City and had properly fortified themself against the Rebel Horde that was approaching. As the rebels clashed with the Castle Guard, the Royal Guard quickly maneuvered to evacuate the King and his family to the ports where Shaysaren’s fleet had already began to set sail, save for the King’s Flagship the HMS Dhaiga, whose crew would not leave without the King aboard. This gave the rebels the opportunity to send a force to blockade the port to prevent the King and his family from escaping. A few waves of rebel soldiers were sent to stop the King’s rush for the port, but the royal guard ripped through every wave thrown at them. Soon, the King would reach the blockade and was forced to fight alongside his royal guard against the rebels to free his family. The Captain sent a unit to distract the blockades flank and both units made an offensive thrust through the blockade. They fought to protect the King’s family and made it to the HMS Dhaiga whose crew was holding back the rebels on a narrow dock. The King made it to the Dhaiga, but at the cost of many soldiers and the ship left port.

                Upon seeing everything that was happening, the atrocities of the battle, the threats on his family's life; the King was enraged at the Rebel Army and declared: “I would rather see my city in ruins than in the hands of traitors!” As soon as the rebel army was beginning to break through the castle fortifications, the order to fire was made and the city was bombarded by the Shaysaren Fleet. The Rebel Army was brought to chaos as cannons rained down upon them indiscriminately. Buildings were blown to bits and bodies were sent flying. The Rebel Army was broken and after the bombardment, the city’s soldiers were able to push back against the rebel army. The King and his guard, along with the rest of the fleet docked and pushed against the Rebel Army’s remaining flank. In one final rush, the Rebel Army was reduced to a group of scattered, scared men. The Shaysaren Rebellion had been defeated.

                The next morning, hundreds of funeral pyres would be seen on the sea, each one holding bodies, or whatever could be found, of both noble and commoner alike. In the end, no one could discern the difference enough to be able to separate the two. Thousands stood at the edge of the port watching the flaming arrows sling into the boats. The King allowed this one day of peace for the dead to be burned and the people to mourn, but the next day the lives of every person in the nation would change. A new dawn would arise on the ashes of the dead.

                1363 A.F.: The New Revolution

                It has been seven years since the Shaysaren Rebellion and Avilion has undergone more changes in the past decade than the nation has in a century. In an effort to revive Shaysaren from the damages done by the Rebellion, the King invested himself in the study of magic and technology, funding research in the Caster’s Guild and Andravarri which would start a boom in Magitek Research and Development. Magitek had been used in the years before, but never in abundance . . . until the king needed the force to rebuild his city that is. The combined forces of the Craftsman from Andravarri, the Caster’s from Vitascuren’s Caster’s Guild, and the resources from Varrimark have fueled the renewal of Shaysaren, and the beginnings of the Magitek Revolution.

                But not all is Paradise.

                Soon after the Shaysaren Rebellion, there was an outcry amongst the nobility throughout the country on the treatment of the lower classes. The Aristocrats claimed that if the lower classes continued as they had been, another rebellion like the one in Shaysaren would only be a matter of time, and that all major cities in Avilion would be at risk. In an effort to prevent this, the nobility wanted greater control over the freedoms of their serfs and those living on their lands. The king, in his weakened state, had to appeal to the wants of The Aristocracy and granted them the rights needed to better dictate the freedoms of those they ruled. As a result, nobles subjugated the lower classes and pushed them harder into the labor forces than ever. Many in the middle class quickly crashed back down into the low class and were forced to become serfs and those that remained were generally in the pockets of the higher classes in one way or another. This control over the lower class put the common people into life akin to the tortured slaves of old, and created a country where there was virtually no chance of upward mobility for the common people. As such, the final force to drive this “Magitek Revolution” would be the blood, sweat, and bones of the lower class.

                The world has become a much darker place in these years since the rebellion and for the common people of Avilion, life seems a little more hopeless each day. For seven years the people have lived under these conditions, but some remember the ideals of the Shaysaren Rebellion and still have those ideals burning deeply in their minds and souls. Some will not stand idly by while thousands suffer. A new Revolution is forming in the Land of Avilion and war is brewing in the nation. Will this be the beginning of Avilion’s Fall into Dust, or the climax of its Rise from Ashes?

                The year is 1363A.F. and our story will take place in The Kingdom of Avilion. Avilion is located on the Eastern coast of the continent, properly known as the Eastern Expanse, in between The Kingdom of Vanaryth to the North and the Darujian Empire to the South. Avilion has strong ties with its neighbors (though there is a great deal of animosity between Daruj and Avilion) and is the center of trade between the three nations.

                Because of its location, the Kingdom of Avilion is a pool of information and it has many colors over the course of it territories. Avilion is also the second largest nation on the eastern coast of the continent and is a self-proclaimed superpower in the world because of its influence on its neighbors.

                Avilion is primarily broken up into three regions: Eastern Avilion, Central Avilion, and Western Avilion. Each region brings different influences to the nation and has different impacts depending on the major cities within the region.

                        Eastern Avilion holds the Capital City of Shaysaren and has more major cities and towns in it than any other region. Eastern Avilion is known for its military and industrial strength. It is also the center of foreign trade and politics in Avilion.

                            Shaysaren: Shaysaren is the Capital City of Avilion. It is the home of the King and much of its nobility. The Nobility of Avilion meet in Shaysaren annually to create and change laws across the entirety of Avilion under the King’s consent (though this is only done for laws and decisions that will affect Avilion universally) and since the attempted revolution, the most powerful of the Nobility have stayed in Shaysaren for half a year to aid the King’s City by the order of the King, though most of the nobility realize that this is a ploy the King uses to keep them under wraps during his weakened state.

                            Shaysaren suffered many damages because of the revolution, but over the course of the past seven years it has repaired most of the damages and grown greatly, becoming even more powerful than it was previously. Shaysaren’s noble began funding Magitek research after the revolution to strengthen the city and because of this and Shaysaren’s close proximity to the city of Andravarri, Shaysaren has grown in industrial strength. With Shaysaren’s growing industrial strength, comes greater economic strength through its trades with Vitascuren, The Kingdom of Vanaryth’s port city Glaciem, and the Darujian Empire’s port cities. Ironically, the revolution which sought to weaken the capitol, only seems to have made it stronger.

                            Andravarri: Andravarri is a mining and crafting city built along the mountains east of Shaysaren. Its miners pull a great deal of resources which are then forged into weapons, armor, tools, or traded. Andravarri trades its minerals and arms with cities such as Vitascuren and Shaysaren and has been the prime force driving the rise of industry and rebuilding of Shaysaren. It is ruled over by the Duke of Andravarri and his family.

                            Fissa: Fissa is an open agricultural town south of Shaysaren. It is located directly next to a massive lake and uses an irrigation system to water its crops. The town is small compared to other major areas in Avilion, but its agricultural goods are traded with both Vitascuren and Shaysaren. It is also able to trade these goods with the merchants who travel from Vitascuren to Andravarri. Fissa is known and named after a legend of a great fish who supposedly lives in its lake.

                    Central Avilion

                        Central Avilion has a few scattered villages and towns and only one major city, but because of its location, it is the wealthiest part, and economic center of Avilion itself.

                        Major City

                            Vitascuren: There is an old saying in Avilion: “All roads lead to Vitascuren” and it is quite true. All major roads throughout The Kingdom of Avilion center themselves around this city which makes it both the economic center and center of internal trade in Avilion. Vitascuren receives goods from all major cities and towns across the Kingdom and is sometimes called a “Golden City” for its wealth of information, goods, and money.

                            Vitascuren is lead by one of only two noble families to hold the title of “Archduke” and is also home of the Caster’s Guild in Avilion. Because of this, Vitascuren seems to be more philosophically advanced than the other major cities in Avilion, but with this comes a reputation of arrogance within the city. Though, this arrogance also comes from the fact that Vitascuren was the original capital of Avilion, but in the 900s the capital was moved to Shaysaren to improve relations with Vanaryth by having easier access and trade almost directly between the two nations’ capitols. Because of this, the citizens of Vitascuren and Shaysaren have always had a bit of animosity between them.

                    Western Avilion

                        Western Avilion sometimes seems like a different world when compared with the eastern side of the country. Most of Western Avilion never comes in direct contact with the capital, Shaysaren, and does most of its business with the rest of the country through Vitascuren. As such, the capital has less influence on the middle and low class citizens in Western Avilion, and the nobles look more towards Vitascuren for guidance rather than Shaysaren.

                        Major Cities

                            Varrimark: Varrimark is a city that lies in between the Western mountain range in Avilion and a large forest. Varrimark is a powerful city in Avilion because of this unique location which allows Varrimark to send men to the lumber camps North of the city and also to the mines located towards the West in the mountains. Because of this, the nobles of Varrimark have collected a massive labor force to chop down wood and mine ores that help fuel the Magitek revolution throughout Avilion. The lumber and ores later are traded from Varrimark to Vitascuren, and then traded as cheap goods to the rest of the Kingdom.

                            But Varrimark’s price to pay is the conditions of the city. Men could be away from their homes for days, even weeks during the busier seasons and the men are poorly paid for their work. Varrimark is known for having less than favorable conditions for its people, but unlike Shaysaren, the common people have never risen against Varrimark’s nobles. This is because the Kingdom needs access to cheap resources and if Varrimark was ever in danger, much of the Kingdom would retaliate, especially in Western and Central Avilion.

                            Andrasidan: Andrasidan lies farther from the capital than any other city and thus is under the least influence from the capitol than any other, but its history is what keeps it loyal to the country. Andrasidan was originally a port town in the territories of Vanaryth, but was captured during Avilion’s early expansions westward. When the town was captured, the then King of Avilion placed his brother as Archduke of the city and since then Andrasidan has acted as a capital in the west.

                            The city trades with the western ports in Vanaryth and with Varrimark through Vitascuren for resources. The city also has a small navy because of its port location which has allowed the city to act as flank and first defense against Vanaryth should Vanaryth ever attempt to regain its territories (and it also keeps Vanaryth under Avilion’s control.) However, because of its faraway location, Andrasidan has had to fend for itself throughout the city’s life and its people have hardened because of it.

                    The Eastern Expanse

                        The Eastern Expanse is the term used to describe the collection of land owned by nations on the eastern side of the continent (most of the Western side is made up of unexplored territories.) Avilion is one of three nations in the Eastern Expanse. The other two nations are The Kingdom of Vanaryth which takes up the Northern lands, and the Darujian Empire which takes up the lands to the South.

                            The Kingdom of Vanaryth: (Vanaryth) The Kingdom of Vanaryth once controlled all the northern territories of the Eastern Expanse, but now it is the smallest of the three nations that are in control. This is mostly at the fault of Avilion for after Avilion was unified as a Kingdom, it began to expand westward and took much of Vanaryth’s territories. However, just because the nation is small does not mean it is weak.

                            The people of Vanaryth are known for being the sturdiest of mankind mentally and physically. This is because of the harsh conditions they must live under year round. It is always snowing somewhere in Vanaryth and there is very little room for fair crop growing. As such, hunting is the best option for survival as the furs can be used for warmth and the meat can be cooked well. Vanaryth is also mountainous which allows access to many precious metals to make weapons, and war.

                            Also, because of Vanaryth’s geography, it’s people are quite isolated from the rest of the world. Most of the border between Vanaryth and Avilion is a treacherous tundra that is dangerous to cross on foot. And the most direct land route to the capital goes through a mountainous region that has very steep hills going between it. As such, communication and trade with Vanaryth is mostly done by sea between Shaysaren and the port city of Glaciem. Through Glaciem, goods and information reach Vanaryth’s Capital: Mointine.

                            Mointine is a city built in the mountains of Vanaryth and produces excellent metals and crafts. Mointine trades these crafts through Glaciem to the rest of the world and also arms its armies with the best equipment possible while hardly paying any coin for it. What Vanaryth lacks in produce it gains in metals and arms.

                            The Darujian Empire: (Daruj) The Darujian Empire controls the entirety of the Southern lands in the Eastern Expanse and almost half of the Expanse itself. This makes Daruj the largest nation in the Eastern Expanse. However, Daruj is not the most profitable, much like Vanaryth, because of geography.

                            Most of the Darujian Empire is desert (almost the whole of the Southern empire is) and the empire grew on harsh terms. Originally, the areas of the Darujian Empire were inhabited by nomadic tribes. This tribes would often war against each other for a variety of reasons, but the most common were control of the oasis scattered throughout the desert, and religion. Religion in Daruj wasn’t very different from that of Avilion at this point in time, though tribes tended to dedicate themselves to one god fanatically. The Darujians worshiped The God of Light and Order whom they called Lyyse. They believed Lyyse to be the one true God, the true son of Heaven and believed that to bring order to the world they had to spread the word and ways of Lyyse.

                            The Darujian’s would go on to conquer and enslave many other tribes and would soon become a massive horde that traveled across the desert. Eventually the horde began to move North and found the green grass of the central territories of the Eastern Expanse. Here the beginnings of cities had been settled and the Darujian’s ravaged the land. They captured the cities and settled there, forcing the slaves to feed and arm the Darujian horde.

                            From here the the Darujian’s grew into an empire that took over the south and has stood against the test of time. Daruj is very militaristic and favors fanaticism because of its history. It rules with an iron fist and most of its labor force is made up of slaves and the rest of its populations is mostly made up of the armed forces. There is very little politics in Daruj and because of this Daruj is a very chaotic state that often faces uprisings and Civil War as the warrior caste fights for more power.

                            In the quest for power, the warrior caste of the Darujian Empire often tried to invade territories in Avilion, but was always pushed back by the unified forces of the Avilionian people. Eventually, merchants and aristocrats daringly landed at one of Daruj’s ports and managed to buy their way into the ranks of the city. The people of Avilion still haven’t seen much beyond Daruj’s ports, only a few ever having seen the nation’s capital, Tentru.

                            Currently, because of merchant trade agreements, Daruj is at an unsteady peace with Avilion (though ambitious Darujian Lords still try to take Avilionian land,) but most believe that if Avilion were to ever show a moment of true weakness that Daruj would move to try and take over and spread the Way of Light, and slavery, to the people Avilion.

                Avilonians generally believe in a polytheistic religion based around the “Six Elements of Reality.” These elements are also commonly known in magical philosophy as the elements manipulated by Caster’s (primarily Elementalists) to perform their magical feats. But the role of the elements in the religious view of the Avilonians is rather different. Each of the six elements is prevalent in almost every aspect of the known world and so through the views of the religious, these fundaments of reality were forged by six Gods and Goddesses that each represent one of the six elements in both the physical sense of the element, and an abstract reality associated with the element. The Gods are as follows:

                    Básteáinne, the Goddes of Fire and Death. She is often associated with imagery of wildfires and the remnants of a battlefield. She is viewed as cruel, but honorable and to be extremely beautiful. Because of her beauty she has seduced many of the Gods and therefore has birthed many Heroes to bring her destruction upon the world. This can be for both good and malicious purposes.

                    Créath, the God of Earth and Change. He is often associated with imagery of mountains and great battles that change the world. He is a stalwart, proud, and stubborn God who is believed to have brought both very good and very bad changes. His pride is often manipulated by the Goddess of Fire, and as such, He has fathered more children with her than any of the other Gods.

                    Amuth, the God of Water and Time. He is associated with a great many forms of imagery, primarily the ocean, but also as a wizened general or a great architect. But most priests seem to think the best imagery of this god is that of an old historian, a God who can see the flow of time itself and sees all pasts and all futures. He is believed to have fathered only one Hero, and that was when he allowed himself to bed with the Goddess of Fire. Their child is believed to be an insane Tyrant King who ruled over Vanaryth and much of Avilion for three hundred years. It has been the focus of a great deal of theological discussion amongst Historians, Priests, and Philosophers.

                    Amaé, the Goddess of Air and Life. She is generally represented by the image of a tree blowing in the wind. She is believed to be the final touch on the world, the youngest of the Gods and Goddesses. She is the one believed to have breathed life into the world and as such many doctors and healers pray to her in times of need. Because of this association, many revolutionaries in medicine and great healers are associated as her children, though they are considered as minor Heroes because most believe the Goddess of Air's love for life leads her to bed with mortal men, her one great sin. She is also shown as the wife of the God of Light and Order.

                    Solas, the God of Light and Order is the Goddess of Air’s husband and is represented by a paladin in pure white armor. Solas is seen as the judge of the Gods, the one who fixes the problems their children create, but has also been shown as a jealous god at times. He seems to resent his own deeds in saving mortals as he hates the fact that his wife often beds with mortal men. One day, partially to spite his wife, Solas was seduced by the Goddess of Fire and gave birth to the most well-known Hero in Avilion, the First King, and Founder of the Kingdom, Iaiden Gallahad.

                    Anaeinn, the Goddess of Darkness and Chaos. More realistically, she is the Goddess of the unknown, the empty void in space and time, the unanswered questions. She cannot be seen by Amuth as he knows all and she represents nothingness. She has mothered no children, but her presence is always there. She is the feeling of being watched by the night. Because of the mystery associated with this goddess there are very few legends about her, but all only show subtle interactions in the affairs of mortals and gods. She is not a feared god, but she is respected as a force of great power.


                All the Gods and Goddess are believed to be the “pure” children of reality and each is believed to have gifted their physical elements to the world, and each seems to be able to manipulate the abstract elements present. Many genesis stories detail how the gods have done this, but all the stories say the gods are a force whose presence is beyond the understanding of mortals. Now, of course, there are many who believe that these gods are not real and the stories of their “Hero Children” are just stories invented to fascinate the listener or reader and were likely used as propaganda to legitimize a Hero’s prowess.

                In truth there is no physical evidence of the existence of the Gods, but the Priests of the Temples explain that one can only see the gods through faith. As such, there has been both the fanatically faithful and skeptic heathens. Most people who question the existence of the Gods choose to be quiet on the matter however.

                (Note: Whether or not your characters believes in the Gods is fine, perhaps they even believe that they have seen a God or Goddess in physical form, or that they are a Hero child of a God and Goddess. All of this is fine, but proving this would be another matter entirely. No one can call upon the Gods to serve them, and I would like people to decide for themselves whether or not the gods are real in this world.)

                On The Fundaments Magic

                Mana: Extensive study of Mana is a slow process, and often an unrewarding one. Throughout all the records and experiments, the tests and the trials, the successes and failures, our ‘knowledge’ remains limited to a rudimentary understanding. Thus it is recommended that these writings be viewed from more than just the literal perspective. Understanding, you see, is not something as simply conveyed as knowledge.

                Mana is, for lack of more definite terminology, the catalyst of existence. It is when Mana is introduced that things are brought into existence, become a new existence, or even presumably cease to exist. It is present in all things that exist, for it is the Mana that continues to cause their existence. Thus, as things exist, they will “generate” Mana to varying degrees. A more complex and unique existence requires more Mana to continue existing; whereas more uniform and unremarkable objects, such as the inanimate, require less Mana to continue existence. This is how the remarkable “generate” more Mana than the unremarkable.

                Mages, Casters, call us what you will, are individuals with an inborn proficiency for Magic. Magic, perhaps originally a superstitious term that stuck over the ages, is the use of Mana by an individual to manipulate the world around them. Casters are capable of this as the result of significant amounts of surplus Mana. This excess Mana generated by the Caster is referred to as a “Mana Pool.” By using their excess Mana, they can manipulate existence without jeopardizing their own. Casters can also supplement their own Mana Pool by using the Mana of things around them. This is a skill learned more through intuition than teaching, a likely reason that it is so prevalent in untrained Casters and/or Apostates.

                There are three sub-categories into which Magic has been divided. They are as follows:


                        Elemental: This sub-section of Magic revolves around utilizing the Mana that brings about the distinctions and existence of each of the Prime Elements. The Prime Elements are drawn from fundamentalist theological records, though they have become excellent metaphors for genuine forces of nature. These Prime Elements are Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Light, and Darkness.

                        To use Elemental Magic, the “Elementalist” must have an understanding of these elements. This allows the Caster to replicate the element’s existence using his or her own individual Mana Pool. The alternative and intuitive method used by the untrained is to harness the Mana of the element itself to ‘absorb’ and ‘reproduce’ it in a form they desire. This latter method requires them to have access to a manifestation of that particular element, which can make for extremely variable results.

                        Alteration: This sub-section of Magic revolves around using the Caster’s, or in this case “Alter’s,” Mana Pool to physically alter their personal existence. More experienced Alters can sometimes recognize the Mana of other existences, and use their own Mana in conjunction with it to alter the physical state of another existence. Particularly talented Alters can even create temporary existences on a small scale, such as weapons and tools. Such skills are difficult to master, though, as creating an existence is an alteration of reality itself.

                        The more drastic the change in something, the more Mana the Alter must use, and the more difficult results are to achieve. Changing oneself is the simplest, changing another is more difficult, and changing reality is by far the most phenomenally complex.

                        Psionic: This sub-section of magic is possibly the most distant from the others. Psions are a rare breed among Casters, as their Mana Pool manifests from the existence of thought, versus physical existence. One could say that a Psion’s Mana Pool stems from mental fortitude. Psionic Magic is unique as it manipulates thoughts into existences. The more ‘potent’ a Psion’s thoughts, the more Mana that its existence generates and thus the closer it can come to a reality.

                        The simplest and perhaps most controversial form of Psionic Magic is the ability to manifest one’s thoughts into another’s mind, or vice a versa. Telepathy is an example of how a Psion can communicate by using Mana to make their thoughts exist in another’s mind. Empathy is an example of how a Psion can read another’s emotions by using their Mana to manifest another’s feelings in their own mind. This makes the matter of manipulating the thoughts of other living beings a viable and often disquieting reality. Of all the Casters, it is Psions who are viewed with the most superstition and mistrust by the common people.

                        The most difficult Magic that can be performed by Psions would be the ability to manifest thought into solid form or into a force that can otherwise act on the physical world. Telekinesis is an example of how a Psion may use their Mana to manifest the thought of something moving, thus causing the object to move in reality. Experienced Psions with great mental prowess have been known to be able to form thought into a solid object, similar in a way to how Alteration can bring something into existence from nothing. However, as this form of existence is a “remarkable” one, it requires incredible amounts of Mana to maintain.

                        (Please Note: In the RP a Caster/Apostate can only manifest one kind of magic as an Elementalist, Alter, or Pscion)



                Myrr: Through the study of Mana, Casters have discovered ways in which to cultivate Mana expelled by decaying Matter. In areas of Mass decay (such as the remnants of a battlefield or a lumber camp) large amounts of Mana are released from the decaying matter. This often can be physically seen as a light fog across the area of decay. Alteration Casters capture and change the Mana into a liquid form by mixing it with various elements. This is when Mana becomes Myrr and can be ingested to boost a Caster’s ability to generate Mana, or replenish lost Mana.

                However, there are side effects to the use of Myrr. After extended use of the substance, a Caster’s body will begin to rapidly adapt to the substance’s presence and will soon become dependent upon the use of Myrr to generate normal amounts of Mana. After this happens, a Caster’s body, accustomed to having a Mana Pool, will become addicted to the substance forcing the Caster into severe withdrawal if they try to stay away from using Myrr.

                Myrr has become a strong presence in the Caster’s guild because of its strength and is sold throughout the Kingdom to Casters, however because of the addictive side-effects of Myrr it is advised to only use the substance in emergencies. Sadly, not all Caster’s follow this advice and choose to use Myrr extensively for the added power boost to their Mana pool and ultimately become addicted to the substance.

                On Casters, The Guild, and Apostates
                The Caster’s Guild was founded during the reign of the First King of Avilion. Before then, there were no formal organizations in Avilion dedicated to the study or application of the arcane arts. Many Casters, like the King himself, had to teach themselves how to manage their powers or hope that they could find another Caster to train them. More often than not this would lead the Caster into a military life as at the time most Casters were found in the ranks of Eastern, Central, and Western Avilion’s armies.

                The First King, seeking a way to control and use Caster’s without limiting his own power or rights (a King who does not follow his own laws would be viewed as a weak king in any man’s eyes) founded the Caster’s Guild in Vitascuren. The Guild would train young Caster’s to use their gods given powers to serve the kingdom as well as keep them under the watchful eye of the king. Since at the time Vitascuren was the capital city and home of the king, the Caster’s Guild was never far from King’s justice and power.

                To extend his control over Casters, the First King put into effect a law that stated all those found to be Caster’s must be trained under the tutelage of a Caster’s Guild adept and serve the Guild or Kingdom. All those who were not trained by the Caster’s Guild or did not serve were considered “Apostates” or traitors. Being an Apostate was considered to be an act of treason and could be punishable by death. Some, however, have found ways around this law. Many of the richest noble families will pay for the Guild to send an adept to their home to train their sons or daughters so that the parents may continue to raise and teach their children in the ways of the court. As the children are still being trained by a Guild adept, this still falls within the law and the child is not considered an Apostate.

                Since its founding, the Caster’s Guild has served the Kingdom faithfully aiding in times of both war and peace. While their main concern is finding and training young Casters the Guild has also actively hunted, captured, and/or executed Apostates who would threaten the kingdom. The Guild has also been one of the prime forces in pushing the Magitek Revolution forward, and has been studying its applications fervently in the recent decade.

                To maintain itself, the Caster’s Guild gets payment for training apprentices outside of the Guild and the Caster’s Guild also holds a monopoly on Myrr which is sold to Nobles throughout the Kingdom to give Casters under their dominance an edge. The Caster’s Guild is also very involved in the production and selling of Magitek equipment. Because of the monopoly on Myrr Magitek has proven to be very accommodating to Guild interests.

                The Magitek Revolution


                Magitek refers to all devices, tools, apparatuses, and contraptions that have been engineered by and for magical processes. While the blanket term is easily defined, one finds it does little to explain that which falls under it. The map is not the territory, after all.

                Traditionally, only Casters (a relatively uncommon breed of Human) are capable of using Magic. Even the most determined and disciplined of the common people cannot accomplish the use of magic of their own volition. The reasoning behind this is subject to controversial debate, and a topic for another discussion. Magitek is a development that has changed the rules entirely. Magitek devices place the powers of Magic in the hands of any who have the knowledge to operate them. The devices themselves act as the Caster, and merely require some form of Mana input to act as fuel. Myrr is the most common fuel source, though Casters can utilize their own Mana Pools to operate Magitek. It is important to note that while a Caster is devoting their Mana to operating Magitek, they will have less Mana to utilize other forms of Magic.

                While the things made possible by Magitek are extraordinary, they are limited. A single device can only perform a specific act of magic while a genuine caster is limited only by their skill and creativity. While Magitek can be used in unorthodox manners to accomplish a variety of things, it is still quite restricted by comparison. Furthermore, there is no universal, mass-producible design to follow. All Magitek items are unique in nature as they are subject to the eccentricities of the Casters who help in their engineering. Even the most apparently similar devices are different in how they function or what they can accomplish.

                As previously mentioned, Magitek operates on some form on Mana input for fuel. The most common are Myrr and the Mana Pools of Casters, but there has been extensive research into “Alternative Fuel Sources.”

                    “Leach” Magitek: This experimental line is so named for its unique ability to draw Mana from its surroundings. This can be from both organic and inorganic sources, and sometimes even involves the user themselves. While no issues have been reported by Casters using such devices, as they have the surplus Mana to feed it without incident, non-casters have reported signs of diminishing health, increased rate of aging, unnatural proneness to mild diseases, and other concerns. These incidents are primarily isolated, and have yet to come to public attention, but the demand for the efficient Leach Magitek is steadily increasing and the issues of its indiscriminate drain on Mana warrants great concern.

                    Demons: An incredibly controversial and dangerous development in Magitek is the proposed idea to use Demons as fuel by trapping them within a device. Demons are beings of pure Mana, and as such have a seemingly limitless Mana Pool for Magitek to tap into. The issue lies not in the theory, but in the practice. The summoning of Demons is already highly frowned upon, and falls into a gray area of legality that few authorities appreciate. Then, once summoned, the entity must be kept under careful observation and control until it can be successfully bound into a Magitek vessel. Finally, the most troublesome details involve what happens after the Demon is inside the device. Demons bound to weapons and armor maintain their will and sentience, and can influence the mentality of those exposed to them. Placing them in Magitek is no different, and should the sanity of a Magitek user lapse as a result of Demonic Influence, the repercussions could be phenomenal.


                APPLICATIONS FOR MAGITEK:

                    Weaponry: With the rapid growth of Magitek, it is no surprise that the revolutionary wonder technology has been applied to war. Magitek weaponry can take the form of any manner of armament, from blades to bludgeons, bows to firearms, battering rams to siege engines. The combination of Magic and weapon is incredibly effective, and as with all forms of Magitek, the possibilities are many.

                    Blades can heat to intense temperatures or burst into flame, bows can create their own ammunitions of remarkable properties, and maces can alter that which they strike so that it crumbles under the impact. Knives can pierce armor, spears hurl lightning, and the very visage of a humble cudgel could send enemies screaming to the hills. There are few things a Magitek weapon cannot be engineered to do.

                    Armor: Just as the art of killing has been greatly improved, so has the art of staying protected. Magitek armors can perform just as many bizarre and wonderful acts as their weapon counterparts. Leathers can render one invisible, shields can become so sturdy that even a war hammer shatters upon them, plate mail can enhance the strength and speed of the wearer, and boots can carry a runner with all the speed of a whirlwind.

                    Tools: Magitek tools can mend the unmendable, fix the unfixable, make the sharpest sharper, and mold the malleable. Blacksmiths, tailors, sculptors, and just about anyone with the money can greatly improve the quality and efficiency of their works with the right Magitek tools at their disposal.

                    Transit: Regardless of the cargo, Magitek can get it from A to B in record time and with record ease. Whether it be a cart that reduces the weight of the load, a carriage that protects against all of the elements, or a wheel that can roll across even the most unsteady terrain without disturbing the contents of the vessel, many things are made possible by Magitek transportation.

                    Modern Medicine: With the newfound reliability of Magitek surgical devices, purification systems, and alchemical apparatuses, new age medicine has progressed by leaps and bounds. Magitek allows rare and crucial herbs to be grown and processed into medicines with success, speed, and minimal waste. Magitek prosthetics have given new limbs to the lame and new vigor to the crippled. The developments of Magitek have even raised the bar on average life-expectancy.

                Alright, so here's my rule of thumb. If the role has the words "A" or "An" in front of it: if you choose to reserve that character you may change the title of the role itself and the short description under the title. Don't worry about font coding or anything like that, simply include the title and short description in your final reservation along with the rest of the information and your samples and I'll change it for you on here. Also, ANY role can be a Caster/Apostate (the Caster's of the Caster's Guild are simply specialized in Magic) as long as you properly explain it in your profile. However, I do not want EVERY role to be a Caster/Apostate so if I notice that there is stark difference between the number of Casters and Non-Casters then I will probably put up an announcement saying "No More Casters" for this set of roles. Remember, you also have access to things like Magitek, demonic weapons and armor, yada-yada, so get creative!

The event of the discovery was rather shocking for those close to Leon, which prompted him to be sent off to the Caster’s Guild. This move of course was out of the fright he caused his family and neighbors, but Leon seemed to go along with it. At the Caster’s Guild, Leon flourished in his studies. Within a few short years, he was able to catch up to his peers of similar age. To some, his development was occurring at a frightening and perhaps dangerous pace.

                Alright, so here's my rule of thumb. If the role has the words "A" or "An" in front of it: if you choose to reserve that character you may change the title of the role itself and the short description under the title. Don't worry about font coding or anything like that, simply include the title and short description in your final reservation along with the rest of the information and your samples and I'll change it for you on here.                               Thannek was born into poverty, though his family had a long history of being reliable blacksmiths. Even though nobles came to his father with all kinds of requests for various spectacular armors and weapons they never seemed to have a reasonable amount of money to live comfortably. As soon as he was old enough to swing a hammer, Thannek was put to work by his father, learning the ways of a blacksmith. As he grew up he learned not only how to forge weapons and armor, but how to use them in combat as well. He took part in the Shaysaren Rebellion, both supplying weapons and armor to the lower class leading up to that night, and taking part in the combat on that fateful night. He has since repented to Créath hoping that he will be forgiven for the atrocities he took part in. His intentions are to keep the revolutionaries in line this time around, leading a crew of rebels strictly to keep them in line.

                              The son of a middle-class engineer in Andravarri, Dane didn't have much of a choice but to follow in his father's footsteps- not that he was complaining. He was brilliant, and after he learned about his hidden abilities as a Caster, started dabbling in Magitek before the Shaysaren Rebellion. He moved into Shaysaren to help rebuild and was one of the men responsible for pushing the boundaries of Magitek. After being ousted as a Caster and nearly forced to give up inventing to join the Mage's Guild, he fled, and was nearly killed, but was saved by one of the Captains of the Revolution, who also happened to take part in the previous Rebellion. With a debit to repay and nowhere else to go if he wanted to keep his life, he now helps in giving the Revolution the technological edge they need.

He is a thief and a killer with seemingly no concerns or moral ground to cause influence in his decisions or give any reason to deny his orders. His mastery of stealth is bolstered by a skilled hand in alteration, specifically that of illusion. This individual has been a silent but willing and invaluable asset to the rebellion; however, his motives for helping the rebels, if not for the money, are completely unknown.

                              Syn grew up in a small home full of rambunctious boys, but she never felt the need to complain. She was rather protective of the young boys, though it was hard to look over them as they ran around knocking over different merchandise. There had been many times that Syn would have to work to compensate for her brothers troublesome behavior. Her father was given a better opportunity to sell some of various goods in Shaysaren. Unfortunately, time and luck seemed to be routing against them. The worst times were during the Shaysaren Rebellion. Between the nobility's injustices and the rebels blatant disregard for personal property Syn had to be a mother to her brothers while her father fought off any unwelcome visitors. When rebellion came to an end Syn was just one in the crowd of people who watched their loved ones float away from the shore. Left with nothing, Syn taught herself many different things, consuming knowledge whenever she could. She found herself increasingly attracted to the ideas of medicines and healing. Syn would help the wounded rebels as often as she could, though if she had grown up a noble, she would surely be helping elsewhere. What mattered most to her was healing the beaten, not the events that led to the injuries. Grown up now, Syn spends all her time helping different people, studying every way to practice medicine. With the help of Magitek it had become easier for her to help more people than before and she prays to the Goddess Amaé often in hope that she will lend support to those who are injured. She tries to ignore as much as she can when it comes to the rebellion, but seeing the damage that is done to the people around her, it is becoming increasingly harder for her to block it out.

                ＤＥＭＯＮＳ

                Demons are creatures made purely from Mana. They are summoned by groups of Casters or Apostates to perform various tasks and they take on a form representative of the Casters’ will. The process takes an immense amount of power and talent on the part of the Casters and the act of summoning a demon is very temperamental which makes it very easy for the spells to backfire and kill a the Casters performing the summoning. At first a Demon may be completely obedient to the Casters, but the longer a Demon exists the more aware it becomes. Many times demons have killed their own masters and roamed the lands on their own, feeding off the Mana of those they kill. Sometimes, a demon may even possess, or become trapped, in a physical entity such as a sword, or amulet. As long as the item has a less complex existence (lack sentience, life, etc.) the demon can be trapped in it, granting that item various powers based on the demon that has possessed it. However, the demon always inhabits the item, whispering to those who hold it, waiting for its release.


                ＵＮＩＣＯＲＮＳ

                Seeing a Unicorn has become a rare privilege in Avilion. Unicorns have been hunted for centuries because of their unique magical properties and the value that goes along with those properties. Unicorns appear almost as apparitions rather than physical beings. This is because Unicorns have a massive excess of Mana which creates a sort of magical shield that allows them to survive in the most extreme of environments. Because of this massive mana pool, Unicorns are an excellent commodity in Myrr production and were hunted and sold to the Caster’s Guild for a hefty price. The hunting has caused Unicorns to almost completely disappear from the face of Avilion.


                ＤＲＡＧＯＮＳ

                Dragons are massive creatures, possibly the largest creature one could possibly see above land. Dragons are known for two things: their roar and their skin. Dragons have a wickedly loud roar. This is because Dragon’s have no eyes, and are therefore blind. They use their roar, much like bats, as an advanced form of echolocation in the mountains. They are able to discern the minute vibrations of sound and where the sounds are bouncing off from on a scale humans could never comprehend. This allows them to hunt their prey and make shelter in the mountains. Concerning prey, and defense, it also serves a second purpose that allows them to severely disorient whatever it is they are trying to kill. Once their prey is disoriented they lunge in for an attack using their massive jaws or tail. A dragons skin however is very tough as it has hundreds of rough scales growing out of it. The corpse of a dragon is very valuable as the skin can be used to make very effective light armors, and the bones can be used to make valuable weapons and heavy armors. Kill a dragon and you are wealthy for life.


                ＬＥＶＩＡＴＨＡＮＳ

                If one were to call a Dragon the king of land and sky, then the Leviathan is certainly the King of the sea. Leviathans tend to be seen in the deep ocean, and often harass ships that come too close to their homes. Developments in ship technology have allowed sailors to defend against a Leviathan, but they are still a great threat to ships and port cities. The Leviathan has a rock like armor that covers vital areas of its serpent-like body for defense. Its main weapons as a predator are four tentacles which allow it to latch onto rocks to pull itself faster through the water, and catch prey (or pull ships under water.) Also, the creature’s sheer size is a weapon in itself as it will often ram ships. Leviathans also seem to show a hint of complex intelligence for if they notice ships periodically trespassing in their territories, they will sometimes (though this is rare) follow the ships back to port to attempt to destroy the source.


                ＴＨＥ ＣＥＲＢＥＲＩ

                The Cerberi are a magically bred race of dog created by the Caster’s Guild. The story goes that the Caster’s Guild was looking for ways to breed a more intelligent kind of dog and during research, one of the Adept’s dogs gave birth to a conjoined set of triplets. Curiously, the Adepts raised the conjoined triplets and found that the dog had many physical issues, but the three heads would work together to try and solve problems suggesting the advanced kind of intelligence the Guild was looking for. Alters quickly got to work on isolating the trait, and manifesting new ways to balance the physical problems the three heads provided. Over the years they learned to alter the traits in dogs to make them much larger and much stronger to compensate for the three heads. Now, The Cerberi serve the Caster’s Guild as not only a sign of power, but as the Guilds personal guards.

                Centuries ago, the Caster’s Guild began research into a new area of alteration magic: Fusion. The idea was that one could fuse two objects together to create one with alteration magic. The research began on non-biological items such as metals and lumber, but later the Guild’s Casters began to experiment in fusing two living creatures together. Some of the experiments came out as monstrosities, others seemed to come out fine, but died soon after. The Casters tried again and again until finally, they created the Manticore. The Manticore was a massive creature who even showed a level of intelligence. The Guild held the Manticore imprisoned and study it, but the Manticore eventually escaped into Vitascuren, which at that time was the Capital City. The King was furious and decreed that all research on fusion be banned. The group of alters working on the project gathered all they could and ran away from the guild, never to be heard from again. Now the Manticore has become a children’s bedtime story, but strangely enough similar creatures do crop up from time-to-time. In general these creatures are called “Chimera” and seeing them is a rarity (once every 70-100 years at most usually.) When they are seen they usually disappear or die soon afterwards. No one knows where they come from, but there are plenty of rumors.
