Someday she will find the light . . .

xxxxxIt was evening, the sun setting, the day winding down. The lights set up around the big top tent turned on as Elise set foot in the clearing. She had spent the day wandering through the forest for the most part, attempting to forget about thoughts of the past, to wipe all thoughts from her mind actually. She carried a small notebook tucked under her arm, having spent the day writing a few short stories as well as sketching the woods a bit. She wasn’t very good at sketching, but it really helped her clear her head of all thoughts. Besides that, she enjoyed drawing even if she didn’t compare to most. Under her other arm was a large leather bond book, The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection to be exact. She happened to love the series, and hadn’t read it in a while so she supposed that she could use that to keep her mind busy.
xxxxxThere were already some of the audience outside of the big tent, but no one was allowed in yet. The concession stands were open already, as well as the rides and petting zoo and such. There was still a few hours left until the performances would begin though. Elise smiled politely at everyone she passed, saying hello to the staff and nodding to the patrons. She made her way through the thin crowd to the big top tent and entered. With a small smile still forced upon her face she made her way into the back of the big top tent and down the residential corridor to her room. She dropped off her things there and took a quick look in the full length mirror. She wasn’t dressed for the show yet, still in a simple lilac coloured dress, half of her white hair up in a large side bun, the rest cascaded down her back ending a bit below her waist. She had on light pink tights and white ballerina flats, they were comfortable to move around in, especially when she’d been walking through the forest for the whole day. Upon her face was her iconic half domino mask. She hadn’t taken the thing off for quite a while, even going so far as to sleep it in. She shrugged slightly at the thought and turned to leave the room quietly.
xxxxxBarely any time had passed, and she hadn’t seen anyone around either. She bit her lip, wondering what she should do for the remaining time before the first show of the night would start. She walked back to the back stage area, going into a backroom and retrieving a broom. She returned to the stage and started sweeping, it wasn’t too dirty, but it gave her something to do. The stage had a bit of litter scattered across it, after all the members of the circus had been coming a going and sometimes things fell out of pockets or out of boxes being moved. Besides, the menial work helped take her mind off of her thoughts for a bit as well. She really didn’t like to be trapped within her own mind as she often was. Her thoughts always turned to darker, depressing thoughts. Her mind liked to force her to relieve the past through horrid flashbacks and just the thought of another one taking hold terrified her enough to make her hands tremble as she swept.
xxxxxTo be truthful, Elise couldn’t wait for the night’s performances to begin. She loved the feeling of showing off a bit of her true self to so many people. It was a time she wasn’t ridiculed for her powers, wasn’t sought by others as a weapon. It was a time that people thought that what she did was wondrous and beautiful or wondrous and grotesque. Either view was fine with her, and despite the fact she hated that they thought that what she did was just a trick most times, she loved the feeling of acceptance that she got. That was why she liked the circus as well, everyone who performed or worked there had become like family to her. Everyone accepted one another, they may not like everyone in the circus, but they accepted them for who they really were. Whether they be vampire or werewolf, witch or human, they were all accepted in this place. Sure things weren’t always happy and incidents did happen, but they happened everywhere.
xxxxxElise was grateful to be a part of such a diverse and accepting group though. She enjoyed meeting new people each place they went, enjoyed interacting or watching the other members of the circus interact. She enjoyed the opportunity to perform and to travel across the world doing so. Really, the circus was a blessing for the immortal girl. Before she had come to the circus, so much had happened in her life. She’d been through so much, both bad and good, but it seemed that only the bad really affected her life. She’d felt emotional pain that made her feel like she was dying as well as physical pain that should have killed her. Still, she was in one piece, one slowly shattering piece. She’d been loved, betrayed, used, and abused over the years she had lived. All of it affected her, but unfortunately the bad outweighed the good. She tried to push all those thoughts from her mind, she didn’t want to show anyone how weak she had been, how broken and shattered she really was. With a small smile on her face she hid all her insecurity and fear from the world.
xxxxxThe white haired girl shook her head, thoughts like that would lead to more thoughts on the matter, which was not a very good thing at all. She finally noticed that her hands had already started to tremble at the thoughts. She bit her lip hard, making it red and irritated, nearly drawing blood with how hard her teeth pierced her lower lip. She felt the pain, bringing her out of her thoughts for the moment. She smiled a small smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes as she began sweeping more furiously. She started humming to herself quietly as she continued to work, wiping all thoughts from her head for the moment.
