You know what they say- "Nothing bad ever happens in Chicago".

No, it's not a joke. Maybe a few decades ago, it would have sounded like one. Crime rates were high, police were either too underfunded to do anything, or too corrupt to really care. There was trouble all over, and people knew better than to walk too carelessly on the streets at night.

That was then. Now, with the help of heroes throughout time, things are different. Better.
Faces and names cataloged in history over the decades stand as monuments to the changed world. Chicago, especially, remains as a example across the country of what good metahumans can do.

The hero Bastion, along with the efforts of others in the past, has changed the once dangerous city into somewhere safe. Prosperous and beautiful. A tourist hot spot more than it ever was before, in no small part due to people hoping to catch a glimpse of the hero. Since Bastion's rise to fame over the city, crime has fallen to unbelievable ranges. It's rare to hear of anything worse than a small robbery, minor altercations. The age of big time villains and common crime ended a long time ago.

Maybe not the whole world, or even the whole country, is at peace. But thanks to brave efforts and vigilance, the city has enjoyed the last six years (soon to be seven) in an unprecedented level of safety. The economy is good, the streets are safe. Gang activity is at record lows and seems to drop more and more every year.

Things are good.
..But you know what they say about all good things.

Bastion action figures, t-shirts, posters. Hell, there's even a movie deal in the works.
It's what happens when a hero becomes the posterchild for record-breaking peace in a once-dangerous city. Of course, it doesn't help that the biggest hero in Chicago is equal parts charismatic, brave, and adept with his powers.
(Force field powers always market well for toys and media promos.)

While the people generally eat it all up, there are select types with.. varying opinions. Aspiring heroes who want to be just like him. Older veterans who see him as a showboat, just a face for media agendas. Then there are the villains. There's a long list of people wanting Bastion's head on a plate. If only anyone could get it.

As it is, the guy guards the whole of Chicago with charm and a secret identity no one has been able to even guess at in years. Mysterious for the cameras, frustrating for those who would love nothing more than to dethrone the king of the city's calm streets. For the first few years, people assumed it would pass. Something would happen. Now, nearly seven years into things? Bastion is a household name, a common fixture.

Which is exactly why it's gonna hurt when he's gone.
The city is about to change. You decide in what way.

① Literacy. What you write matters more than how you write it. How you write it matters more than how much you write. Enough content in a post for other people to work with is the main goal. Beyond that, things like a once-over or spell-check are a nice idea. You don't have to meet a certain paragraph or word count quota to join, but you do need to have the basics down. (Grammar, spelling, ect.) No one is perfect, and we all make typos, but there's a difference between one or two in a post versus one or two in every sentence.
If you have to question if you're up to this standard, you may already have the answer. If you're nervous about it, feel free to pm someone in charge and ask. =)

② Characters. Your character is not the most sexy, intelligent, powerful anything on the planet. Maybe they're notably smart, or especially strong. But they are not the be-all end all perfect human being. Know what they're bad at as much as you do what they're good at. Powers shouldn't negate any inherent flaws they have as a person. A lot of character creation has been left open to any kind of design rather than nailed down with hard rules. Don't abuse that fact. If you're worried an idea you have might not go through, feel more than free to pm someone and ask. We're here to help. But more than anything I want to stress that ideally characters should be very human. What this means is that they should have shortcomings as much as they do strong points. Weaknesses as much as strengths, fears as much as hopes. Try to leave room for your character to develop. Maybe start them off with a fear or shortcoming they conquer as the story goes on. Or maybe a particular strength they lose at some point. Don't try to make an endgame version of your character right out of the gate. Focus on making something you'll enjoy playing and watching grow and change.

③ Powers. Separate from the characters rule for a reason. Powers are typically the most important part of superhero-based roleplays and often the biggest point of contention. So let's slap down some points right here. You can have up to three powers. But you do not have to have three, so if you don't want that many don't take it. Powers should generally intertwine or not all be crazy. (ie- don't fly, shoot lasers, and burst into flame because lol why not) Try to tackle it like the idea of a main power and supplementary or supportive abilities. Not each power should be something huge and broad and powerful. We don't need a roster full of supermans tearing s**t up in here. Of course, with all that said, you don't have to have powers at all. There are plenty of capable heroes, villains, vigilantes, and just plain civilians with no powers at all. Create what you want, how you want. Just.. try not to go overboard. Please?

④ Pace. Here's the part that gets most people. At minimum, I'd like to see people posting once a week. More than this is of course wanted and encouraged, but if you can't meet higher than that, it's ok. Life comes first. If you can't get a post in within a week since your last, and it's for an important reason like work, school, special issues, ect- just pm someone in charge and explain the situation. We're always willing to work with people when it's not something like "I just don't feel like it lulz". Beyond posting speed, this thread will have events that stretch board-wide. An exact schedule for these isn't set in stone yet, but I would like to get somewhere in the once a week/once a month range. It all depends on what everyone is comfortable with and capable of keeping up with.

⑤ Communication. The best way to keep anything alive is by good communication. Got a question? Pull up a pm or ask in the ooc. Plot with people. Chatter nonsense. Just stay in touch. I know I'm bad about this, so I get it if staying super active in the ooc isn't your thing. If it helps at all, I have skype and am more than willing to keep a group for the rp collected. So if you join and would like to, feel free to pm me your skype and I can add you. I like being reachable, most people around here do, so don't be shy about getting connected.

⑥ Decoration. Aesthetics never have and never will be the top priority around here. If you want to spend five hours in photoshop or two minutes in a text box, that's up to you. All I ask is that pastel and neon colors be avoided for posts you want people to read. Also keep fonts somewhere between 10 and 13 for parts to be read. However many graphics and pictures and colors you do or don't want to involve is your business, we don't have a clear cut standard beyond just not taking someone's eyes out with your post format.

⑦ ToS. If you don't know it, read it. If you do know it, stick to it. Fade to black when the clothes come off, if you take it somewhere beyond that please god don't tell me. I don't want to know, I don't want to be pinned for knowing and allowing anything. Just know that in here blood and cursing are bound to come up, so if either make you uneasy here is your official trigger warning.

⑧ Typicals. Because, sadly, I feel like I need to put these here lest someone use the excuse "well you never said I couldn't"-- no godmodding, powerplaying, purposefully ignoring other players and posts, autohitting, ect ect ect. You guys should all know these kinds of things by now, and not do them. If you want to coordinate a fight with someone and narrate their character's actions in your post for fluidity, that's fine. Just make sure to discuss it and agree on things, and if an argument breaks out over that (or anything, really) just walk away and get a mod until things cool off. Thanks in advance.

⑨ Beyond. Rules might get added or edited later as needed. I'll try to mention in ooc if this happens. I'd like to preemptively beg you to not make me have to do that, though.

No one, at first, was really sure where it started.
The peaceful hum of the city was interrupted by a fire that errupted in an apartment building. Some heroes came to help- most of them in the uniforms of police and firefighters. Casualties were at a striking minimum thanks to the help of metahuman volunteers and the quick response of emergency personnel. Ultimately, three died and the cause of the fire was determined as an electrical fault.

Boots on concrete, scraping.
In the middle of the night, websites go offline. Streaming services are taken over. A video feed is released, of a villain no one knows graphically torturing Bastion. The message delivered is excited and clear. In two hours Chicago's beloved icon will be dead. Heroes and Villains alike are invited to come out and join the party. First arrival gets the hero's unmasked head to celebrate.
