Technology has carried mankind to the far borders of space. It brought him unquenchable nuclear fire in the bellies of his vessels to fuel them across the galaxy. It brought him massive golden sails atop masts kilometers tall to harness the suns energy and carry him freely within the reach of the suns warm glow. There is division between the two camps that use these sources of power; a clear and conscious decision was made to keep the solar sources of power confined to the inner 4 planets regions of space, where they were the at their most efficient, and beyond the asteroid belt would be where nuclear power reigned.

For many centuries, this was Sol's way. Divided. Flawed, yet functioning so long as man did not look further than his own borders.

But Sol is a place of invention. Ingenuity. Her inhabitant's dreams carried them this far... Why not further? Why not beyond?

They could never stay still for long.

The breach was open to be plunged upon... they merely needed to find the way across.

When scientists and computers told them it couldn't be done, Sol's people looked inward. Among them, they found the LOTUS.

          Living Omnidirectional Transcendent Universal Source.

These individuals of vast psychic ability were the indigo children of previous generations, the paranormal freaks that had no place or purpose...until it was discovered that they held the key to interstellar travel. Their souls were the ultimate power source, capable of taking Sol's people further than solar or nuclear power could ever hope to achieve. These individuals could open rifts in reality and pass through time and space, bringing with them ships and an entire crew upon training their minds and honing their skills.

At first, however, it was at great cost -- many of these rare psychics died after just one journey, and Sol struggled to find a way to preserve their lives while still using their souls as a power source. Time and time again they failed. It seemed the only solution was not to save the psychics from death...but to bring them back from it.

Scientists turned their attention to the Nelumbo nucifera, or Lotus Flower, as it had the unusual ability to revive after long periods of stasis. The psychics were trained to intercept methods derived from the flower's biological behavior, and over the course of many years, this finally led to the revival of the first psychic. She was able to bring herself back from the dead after meticulously studying the lotus flower, surrounding herself with them and literally worshiping them, and the flower became a sacred symbol and an honorary title.

Just as the petals of the Lotus flower symbolize the expansion of the soul, the LOTUS now guide a new generation through the far reaches of space where none have traveled before, commanding ships and holding the fate of an entire crew in their hands and in the power of their minds.

x This RP is going to have very few limitations. If you have a good idea, we will almost always try to incorporate it.

xRaces are only limited by your imagination, though we are using Pathfinder, Magic The Gathering & War Hammer for basic

x If you create a character or race that is so powerful that it disrupts the ecosystem we have built, we will ask you to tone it down unless
xxyou do the role extreme justice. We are flexible, but we want this to be fun for everyone, not just you.

x If you have a ship, we ask that you submit it via PM to me. I will add it to the Ships and Sky Hooks
xx Thread as if it were a character profile. This does not mean you must divulge all of your ships secrets, in fact we encourage you to keep
xxthem to yourself so that playing out any encounters with it will be new and interesting. We simply want to catalog the ships that exist in

            Ⅳ.xxx P L A N E T Sxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

x If you have ideas about how a planet could be utilized, please share it with us! We are not looking to build this thread alone -- if there is

x This thread offers vast opportunities to those who seize them. You can end up having a planet all to yourself, but this is a privilege
xxyou must earn. We will not just hand a planet over to you, you have to convince us that you will do that planet justice.

x The planets have their own thread which is linked in the first post.

Dome cities are plots of land of various size sealed in huge domes which are designed to mimic conditions enjoyed on Earth.
The domes protect individuals within from the dangerous conditions of the planets they are located on.
Manipulating the land and atmosphere within a dome is called terraforming, and this technology has
been successfully implemented on every planet within Sol.

Calor: Because Mercury's real estate is so valuable for harvesting sunlight, there is only one dome city on this planet, and it's named Calor after the Latin term for Warmth. It is virtually pollutant free, running clean, green and efficient thanks to its proximity to the sun. The dome runs about 1.5 million sq miles -- which is roughly half the size of the former united states -- and holds a mix-race population of 100 million.

It replaced the international space station after it was destroyed and became the solar power capital of Sol. Most of Calor's inhabitants are wealthy environmentalist fanatics who despise nuclear power and seek to destroy the industry, blaming them entirely for the destruction of Earth. The further one gets from the sun, and Mercury, the more prevalent nuclear power becomes. Nuclear power is completely banned on Mercury, and sun worship is not uncommon.

Sun worshipers from Calor are known as Heliotics, and the extremists are recognized by the blindfolds that they wear from self-induced typhlosis, which they call Solarisis. This rite of passage dictates it's initiates must stare into the sun until their eyes are burnt right out of their sockets, claiming the sun god, Ra, will be all they need to guide them. They tend to develop heightened senses due to their blindness, and they believe this brings them closer to Ra and to personally achieving godhood. These naturally constitute a small number of sun worshipers, yet Calor has become known for the activities of these extremists.

Fortis: Despite the inviting nature of her namesake, Venus is home to one of the most horrifying environments in all of Sol. Yet because the planet has been found to contain massive deposits of uranium (a radioactive resource essential to nuclear proliferation) the nuclear empire's fascination with the planet is as old as space travel itself.

Countless entrepreneurs, glory seekers and prospectors seeking fame and fortune alike have delved through the clouds of sulfuric acid that blanket the planet only to find their own demise. Venus is home to the hottest atmosphere in all of Sol, with little viability and an atmospheric pressure 92 times that of the Earth they once knew. They mine their way deep into the hot, acidic soil, searching for uranium rich pockets to exploit, crazed by the potential wealth and blind to the danger of this beautiful, deadly planet.

Volcanoes erupt all over the surface of Venus, making it difficult to establish any lasting Dome Cities or reliable mine shafts. Miners are never safe, always waiting for the next eruption to fill their tunnels with flowing molten lava. The Nuclear Empire employs cheap labor to do their work for them rather than investing in machines that could withstand the environment, allowing millions to die on the job. Fortis is the only city on Venus that has survived since the planet's first occupation, and engineers claim it is only due to luck and a space in fault lines. The city is home to no one but uranium minors seeking fortune at great risk, and the name of the city itself translates to Brave.

Venus has no moons to utilize, and was the planet which first inspired the use of Sky Hooks; vast elevators anchored in the crust of the planet below, hundreds of kilometers tall and reaching through the upper atmosphere. They attach to multiple space docks and refineries where materials and resources gathered from the planets surface can be processed, refined, and transported to the various clientele across the solar system.

Gaea: Nowhere is it easier to terraform to the closest possible artificial Earth environment than on Mars, where conditions are already mild enough to have once contained running water. The planet is almost nothing but Dome Cities, with the largest being Gaea, home to the most diverse number of inhabitants in the solar system.

Gaea is a central hub for all sorts of interplanetary enterprises, including farming, trade, entertainment, research, engineering, education and more. The Interplanetary Assembly, which is contained within the largest ship ever built in Sol, stations itself on a skyhook anchored to Mars, recognizing the planet's importance.

Both Solar and Nuclear power are utilized within Gaea, while most of the other dome cities on Mars are governed one way or another and choose one for primary use. Gaea is unofficially divided into a north and south district, north favoring nuclear power, and south favoring solar power.

          City contributed by Spooky Mittens

Remus: One of the two sons of Mars who were fated to fight. Remus is ultimately killed by Romulus in the dispute.

Remus is a smaller dome city on the surface of Mars, closer to the northern pole than it is to the equator, but fairly close to the middle. It's a temperate city with a very diverse population that is controlled very closely. In order to gain residency in Remus, you need to be pre-approved by the city counsil via some life achievement or reknown. It is a social experiment in a way, where only "exceptional" individuals are allowed to have residency like an aristocracy. This is a farce, in truth all one needs is a boat-load of money. While it is possible to obtain residency via ones accomplishments, this is highly unlikely without a lot of asskissing.

Remus is your typical grid system where buildings are divided by blocks. However, because the dome city is circular, all of these blocks are curved around the central point of the city. A large public park sits at the center with a big pond in the middle. At the center of this pond is the central state building where the city council, courts, and police opperate. This building is a massive tower that stands far above any other in the city because it rises all the way to the ceiling. The rest of the buildings within the city start taller near the center and grow shorter the further to the edges you get. They all have a very roman feeling to them with synthetic stone molding on the outside which makes the city feel almost like it's very old.

The grid has been divided into sections, each section dedicated to a different purpose. You have all of the residential districts in the south of the city, each district divided by a small market plaza. In the north, from east to west, you have water treatment, power, waste, and industrial districts. These are packed closer together than residential, and each works in unison to maintain the city's "pleasant aroma and ambiance". Of course, Remus has it's own dark secrets as well, buried under the streets.

Remus, like most of Mars, uses a combination of nuclear and solar energy, probably leaning towards nuclear a bit more. However, their power infrastructure is more efficient than current technology would usually allow for. Under the streets of Remus lay the remains of an ancient dreadnaught-class space ship of unknown make or origin. It is presumed to be the work of a space faring civilization from before humans had even evolved. Some of the higher-ups within Remus's power structure have started their own cult surrounding this discovery where this unknown race is worshiped as gods. They are believers in the seed model for the origins of life in our solar system. The idea that genetic materials were planted on earth to begin new life. The only evidence they have is the existence of this ship upon which Remus was built.

Phobos & Deimos: These are the two irregularly shaped moons belonging to Mars. For a long time, Phobos and Deimos remained uninhabited because of their eerie appearance and negative vibes associated with their traditional names (Phobos translating to Horror, Deimos translating to Terror).

Ignoring the politically incorrect nature of the undertaking, the Interplanetary Assembly finally found use for the moons and began the construction of the two largest institutions of their kind in all of Sol; an insane asylum on Phobos and a rehabilitation clinic on Deimos.

While there was protest from across Sol, the I.A. argued that the real estate on each of the moons would be otherwise useless -- having the asylum and clinic each on a small moon kept patients isolated, and helped them focus on recovery. They also pointed out that it's visitors, by virtue of whatever conditions had them sent there, would not have the capacity to understand or care about the cosmetics and lore of the planet -- which of course is not always true. Sending mentally unstable individuals to a planet named after horror itself has unsurprisingly proven to be counter productive to their recovery. The Moons have become an underhanded scare tactic from the I.A. just as much as Pluto, Sol's main prison planet, has become.

Jupiter has a long and storied history as the premier ship-building capitol of Sol. With it's inexhaustible supply of rare materials required for shipbuilding, radiation rich atmosphere for stress-testing shield strength, and an impermeable layer of impossibly dense clouds to obscure any secret vessels from the prying eyes of enemy factions, its no surprise that the planet is home to every military shipbuilding conglomerate that exists in the solar system. This of course makes Jupiter a highly volatile powder keg and potentially target rich environment for any enemy of any faction that utilizes the planet...

Due to the dangerous nature of the highly radioactive gas giant, there are few civilian outposts on or near Jupiter. Those that do live here operate on the fringes of the various military bases and provide neutral ground for the many soldiers from every faction that calls a piece of Jupiter it's own.

Grata: Houses of ill repute, brothels, and the especially infamous bars are what Grata, the dome city on Jupiter's moon Io, has become known for. Some of the most dangerous locations and people in all the 9 planets are found here. Mercenary's and bounty hunters find their homes in this unregulated, sheriff-free town. Most would agree that the majority of Sol's problems start in Io.

A good question asked by Peccaminous Peregrine about Jupiter:

Peccaminous Peregrine
How do the inhabitants manage through the huge a** storm that rages across the planet indefinitely and randomly? It's known to be four times stronger than any Earth storm, and not only do they survive it, they build ships in it.

Answer:

Viice
Of course, now I can't find it, but in trying to answer this question myself, I found an article about Jupiter that said that scientists were theorizing that Jupiter does have a layer that is not so stormy, where the greenhouse effect of Jupiter's thick atmosphere actually made it's usually cold temperatures closer to those on earth's atmosphere, and where something like a floating sky city COULD exist in the upper atmosphere (the article was entertaining fictitious ideas of course, about future life in space).

We are basically taking that idea and running with it, saying there is a big layer within Jupiter where sky cities have been built and use Jupiter's magnetic field to stay within the safer less stormy pockets. Also, after reading about how parts of Jupiter's atmosphere can be so thick that it's comparable to water, I wanted to include a few different gigantic whale-like beings that "swim" through those thicker parts of the atmosphere as if it were a great ocean. So as you can see, we're not trying to be too realistic with Jupiter.

You'd have to travel through the stormy and dangerous layers to get to the safe pockets, which is why it was chosen as a base for military operations -- it offers defensive cover not just physically, but visually.

I'd have to refer you, also, to our disclaimer. It's not really meant to be realistic. I mean, there are trees growing on the dark side of Pluto for gods sakes. Even if they're super ******** up trees that thrive in darkness, it's still a ludicrous idea, and so are sky cities on Jupiter, but dammit, that doesn't stop us.

The saying goes in Sol...you haven't seen a party until you've seen Neptune. This is where celebrity's walk the streets, where it literally rains diamonds all around the domes, and where raves and festivals can go on for weeks at a time -- as long as there's people to drug and liquor to pour.

Some of Neptune's upper class districts have high security, invitation only clubs for her more well-to-do party animals, while other areas are almost completely unregulated, baring strong resemblance to Jupiter's Io. In Neptune we find casinos, hotels, motels, amusement parks, red light districts, strip clubs for the rich and for the poor, drug dens and drug lords, head hunters, honeymooners, circuses, carnivals, prostitutes and high class escorts, and much, much more.

It is the sports capital of all of Sol as well, all the big games are held here, including the Olympics, the Superbowl, Colosseum-scale battle arenas, horse races, baseball stadiums, golf domes, and anything else the people demand. There are domes filled with water that are dedicated to nothing but battle ship...and the ships are real. Some domes are nothing but simulated beaches where you can grab a fake tan and a coconut cocktail, but most of Neptune is just a misbehaved metallic jungle.

I am very open to the idea of active individuals in the thread opening their own venues in Neptune.

PM me or quote me in the OOC thread if this idea interests you!

Pluto and it's five moons; Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra, comprise the prison system of Sol. It is the furthest planet from the sun, keeping it's prisoners isolated from the rest of Sol's civilization...except those civilians who stay on Pluto by choice.

Pluto was not always a prison planet -- in fact it once was considered the beacon of interstellar exploration. When first contact was made with other extraterrestrial beings, it was made on Pluto. This small planet was the furthest out, reaching into the rest of the universe, and thus was the first impression Sol made on other planetary systems. It was a trade capital, a place for discovery and exploration as well as the metaphorical lighthouse to those returning to Sol after interstellar travel.

Over time, however, interstellar travel became routine and otherworldly beings were second nature to Sol, causing Pluto's tourist-based economy to collapse. Technology advanced to allow fast and efficient navigation through space, which reduced demand to land on Pluto at all -- why land on such a cold, dark planet when one could go a little further and find themselves on Mars, a land of endless opportunity?

The Interplanetary Assembly, in an effort to preserve Plutarian economy, decided to utilize Pluto and it's many moons as an elaborate and diversified prison system. There were still many civilians living on Pluto at the time who were offered extremely cheap living and resources in exchange for their compliance with the project. As soon as the prisons were established, however, the resources sent to Pluto's civilians began to dwindle, and the I.A. argued that if Plutarians found their living arrangements unsuitable, they should simply move to another planet.

The only significant resource the planet has to offer is Plutarian Wood. Pluto's trees are known as Gemma Trees, and are more like crystalline structures than actual vegetation. They do, however, feed off of the planet through deeply entrenched roots, and they also thrive in darkness in the same way trees thrive in sunlight.

Gemma Trees only exist on the dark side of Pluto. Because the planet rotates sideways, there is a dark side to Pluto which never receives sunlight. This is good for the growing Gemma Tree, as sunlight destroys it's developing crystalline structure. Harvested Gemma Wood behaves much differently, however, than the growing Gemma Tree. As soon as a section of Gemma Wood it is severed from the rest of the tree (which is a feat in and of itself), it dies, compressing and solidifying into a nearly indestructible material, the hardest and sturdiest component in all of Sol. It is an extremely difficult substance to manipulate once it has been severed from the tree, and the curing process could take years, with no guarantee of not compromising the strength of the finished product.

Because Gemma Trees are only found in extreme darkness, they are a very difficult resource to obtain. The dark side of Pluto is the coldest place in Sol, and Gemma Forests are home to some of the strangest and most dangerous creatures ever discovered. The I.A. for a time was sending prisoners to harvest the Plutarian resource, but the project went belly up when a high fatality rate was reported as well as a very low success rate for actually obtaining any usable Gemma Wood.

Anyone desiring the strange material for personal use must make the long trek to Pluto and survive it's dark side while also knowing an effective curing process. It is a voyage few have returned from.

          User Image

Arbor: Arbor is the only civilian occupied dome city on Pluto. The inhabitants of Arbor are minimalists and traditionalists, and a vast majority of their population practice and preserve ancient forms of martial arts. They are extremely disciplined and hardened by the harsh conditions of their planet. For obvious reasons, solar power is all but useless to them -- they use nuclear power exclusively.

The Planets also have their own page.

6/1/14 - Construction: We are about half way through construction of the thread and anticipate to be done soon. We are working on the lore of each of the
planets, fleshing out the main Dome Cities where most starting characters will find themselves, shaping the sol-wide conflict with an alien race, and cleaning up
formatting. You may utilize the OOC thread or submit profiles for review at this time, but no posting in the main thread until construction is complete.

Earth's lore on the Planets page is finished. Mercury will be next.

          6/2/14 - Mercury and Venus:
Lore is finished on the Planets page.

6/4/14 - Mars, Pluto, and their Moons:
Lore is finished on the Planets page.

          6/5/14 - Banners:
WE REALLY REALLY NEED A BANNER! We'll pay anyone willing to make one for us, PM me about it! Made my own WHAT NOW

          6/12/14 - The Lotus:
A very interesting trip to Starbucks led to a brainstorming session and creating the Lotus, a class of characters essential to interstellar travel. See the Profile thread for details.

          9/22/14 - WE ARE OPEN:
Alright you guys can finally start posting. The planets that are not yet designed are fair game, as long as you run your ideas by me before you lay down some grand design. I'll probably be okay with pretty much anything as long as it makes a lick of sense. Remember, before you start posting you are welcome to build a character profile for the profile page, but you are not required to do so.

          10/4/14 - Space Hulk:
Our old friend Ebag The II has introduced his contribution to the plot:

          Ebag The II
He (Dzan) is then in control of a space hulk; the crazy conglomerate of ships just mashed together that's somehow survivable and actually has enough power to sail around space with.

See the Space Hulk in action for the first time here. For newcomers unsure of how to join the RP, you are welcome to introduce your character as part of one of the ships that were mashed into the Space Hulk, giving you ample opportunity to interact with other characters.

          10/11/14 - Banners:
WE NOW HAVE BANNERS! <3 Go check them out under the "Affilates" section.

11/17/14 - How to join Dzan's Space Hulk (GREAT FOR NEWCOMERS):
          The Duke of Id
Dzan has a spaceship and a crew of space pirates & criminals. They 'crashland' on a Space Hulk and are getting their gear ready for whatever is inside... and loot the s**t out of it. pirate

The Space Hulk is floating just outside Jupiter's orbit, floating about 165,947 km from Io. There's three ways you can join the RP:

          A. Enlisted: You joined the crew before all this happened, were along for the ride through the Warp and are only just now waking up from the crash (everyone was knocked off their feet when they crashed into the Space Hulk, likely making you get knocked out). You join Zid, Dzan, Jay, Bishop and their infiltration team to delve into the amalgam of ships too plunder whatever lies inside.

          B. Another Opportunist: You locate the Space Hulk and decide to loot it from your own ship. It's not farfetched to think that other spacers might want to chance the dangers of a Space Hulk for the rewards that lie within. This would likely require that you have your own spaceship, though, or that you're in someone else's.

          C. Resident: You could be in the Space Hulk already. We'd already discussed that with some people, but it's possible your character could've wound up in the Space Hulk by other means other than space travel. Portals through the Warp and all that... which is pretty intense, but plausible. Syndri was gonna have his guy appear there... he hasn't really followed through with that. But this can totally be a thing... I guess... it'd be weird, but it's plausible.

          D. Stow-away: For whatever reason your character decided to stow-away in a space ship with over 60,000 criminals, mercenaries, space pirates, heretic tech-priests and other assorted galactic low-lives. Why? I've got no idea. But if you want to use this as an excuse to get to the Space Hulk and yet don't want to be part of the criminal crew, be our guest... however, be warned: the penalty for riding in our ship without permission is death. Just... don't let us catch you, that's all.

          Thanks Duke! C:

          2/4/15 - Neptune:
Neptune's description has been added, both on the Planets page and in the main thread. I am very open to the idea of active individuals in the thread opening their own venues in Neptune. Simply contact me via PM or in the OOC thread to discuss ideas. You must be an active member of the thread to open a venue.

6/17/15 - Revival: We took a wee break from Errant for a tournament thread we were all pretty collectively interested in, but we have returned! Neptune will be seeing some heavy gang violence as TFOA is challenged by a new upraising presence. Their drug cartel and weapon running will have sudden competition not only on Neptune but also on Io; these are their two biggest distribution points.

Also one of the top artificial intelligence manufacturers and researchers in all of Sol, a company known as Bloom, will be answering for past transgressions as buried secrets involving their inhumane practices are uncovered.

          3/19/16 - Hiccup!:
So I moved from NY to Michigan which kinda pulled my attention from this place big time, but I have returned and I'm actively recruiting folks to come join us for some adventures! PM me with ideas, I'm very open to anything that might kick start this place again.

This is a work of fiction.

We have taken artistic and creative liberties regarding the state of each of the planets, including their atmospheric conditions, their inhabitability, and mankind's technological competence. We will add features to planets that we are aware do not actually exist. We do not truly believe, for example, that a planet contains a particular resource just because we include it in our story. We will try to incorporate accurate and interesting aspects of a planet wherever we can, but for the purposes of this RP we ask for flexibility. We are not scientists or astronomers, we only have a healthy interest in the universe and are doing our best to build usable conditions for our story.

So, if you have an argument based around misinformation regarding a planet, please understand that we don't care about what is the most accurate; we care about what is the most engaging.

For those of us who like to jam while we write.
Some of these songs have no lyrics and are strictly atmospheric, but not all.
I'll be updating this list regularly, check back whenever you need some inspiration.
