Along with the 100 day challenge I’m also trying to finish up a ref for one of the most complex character designs I’ve ever made XD

i feel you, i'm finally working on updating my comic after a year of doing nothing and i need to fix/update my refs...

I will never do this event again unless the themes become optional and we're allowed to work on things for more than one day.

Challenging myself to draw everyday is something I can get behind but the rest of it doesn't really work for me. Last year (for me) it just turned into pushing out a lot of low quality trash in order to meet the deadline. I got pretty far in the event and could have finished it but I didn't see any reason to. All I've got to show for the part of the event I did complete last year is a pile of drawings that I don't like. It just ended up seeming like a distraction from actually improving at things because there wasn't enough time to do my best at anything and I wasn't even free to choose to work on the things that I felt would help me improve the most (without some crazy mental gymnastics to try and fit everything into a theme every day).

Apparently Shev isn't even checking to make sure people are following the themes though! XD

Now we just need the other mods to be that lazy....and we need every day to be a finish/improve day. dramallama

I'm not checking themes because in seven years of modding the event, I've only had to nudge someone for submitting off-theme once. XD If people think they can get away with it, I'll start checking more.

(I shouldn't have said that in the public thread... that was a dumb thing to say...)

We know the way the event is structured doesn't work for everyone, but it does seem to really motivate many people so I'm not sure if we're going to change it that drastically any time soon. tbh I will often just do warm-ups on theme -- like some animal studies -- and then go work on my own projects. Probably going to do that more this year.

Sooooooooooorrrrrrrrryyyyyyy!!! I was also not really awake this morning when I posted that. It was just something I noticed.
That makes total sense though. I suppose I never looked at like that. I kind of use the 100 Day Event to help me improve on my speed the most...and also push me to practice things I haven't been, like sketching digitally. I couldn't get behind it until I forced myself to do it for the first two days of the event and then I was like, "Oh. This isn't so bad. I think I'm getting the hang of it." So. But yeah, the only days that I have a LOT of time to work on anything is during the weekend, so I totally understand. During the week I work full time, have to come home and cook dinner, and generally only have a few hours to draw something up really quick.
But I generally want to get faster at sketching out a concept, so this event helps with that. Plus I kind of vowed that I'd do less art requests and work on fitting my own characters and projects into the themes as much as I can so I'm still working on my projects while doing the event, two birds, one stone so to speak.
Like for the color palette prompts, I've decided to use them to edit my bases for my closed species adopts I'm working on. Things like that. //nod
