"I'd like you to investigate some of the less...cheery sections of the city. I have full confidence that you'll feel right at home, with making yourself visible of course." Mr. Fletcher threw down a file on the desk, Teagan sitting opposite of him, eager to work again.

"We think that some of the Outsiders are trying to form terrorist groups to attack the natives here. We say trying because so far we've only heard that the individuals involved are rather young, somewhat reckless. They could be considered children somewhat in this society, but because of the fact they are skilled in combat and can use a variety of weaponry, their threats are not to be taken lightly. Furthermore, they have made threats against all the five races of Serendipity." He paused for a bit and studied Teagan's face. She looked unconvinced.

"I know what you're thinking Ms. Byrne- How could Serendipity's own military forces even pay one thought to a small handful of rebels? It's true we are very capable and very dangerous. Captain Laresh is quite legendary indeed. But understand that we face all sorts of beings in this plane. I pity you for only knowing the power and destruction of mankind; I assure you there are beings that can bring far worse to existence."

Teagan frowned. She was slowly understanding just how incredibly different Serendipity was. She couldn't quite grasp all of it yet, but after being mocked for denying the existence of magic, and now taught about the powers involved within the races, Teagan finally let go of her own concept of existence, and what life was supposed to be.

"You're saying that in the quiet humble settings of the darker alleys of Cerxes, there could appear a being so powerful, as to be a challenge to the Lady of Cerxes herself."

Johnathan nodded solemnly, but shook his head and smiled, trying to instill bravery into his new employee.

"Precisely. The beings that come into Serendipity are not only from your world- they are from worlds farther away than you could imagine, in different galaxies and dimensions. I understand that's all difficult to swallow, but you'll see it soon enough. Now, we have been here long enough to know a great deal of the begins that lie beyond our own doorstep, but when you remember how vast the universe is, dimensions and all, you realize that you can never truly fathom or study all of it. Which is why we always allow for the possibility that a threat greater than ourselves, could come and destroy this city, even the plane itself, in a matter of instants."

Teagan kept a stern stare on her face. She wasn't sure why she was here, but she felt a fire of a longing for justice sweep over her. Suddenly the affairs of Fortress Cerxes were entwined with her own, and she felt the utmost need to protect both. She took the file from the desk and nodded slowly.

"I will do my best to gather the best information for you Mr. Fletcher..." she said, with a fake confidence. "Learning to be silent and unseen in a city like this though proves very difficult. It may be a couple of weeks before my report can be finished." She looked down, disappointed that she had to admit that.

"I appreciate your honesty, as always Ms. Byrne. Don't look so useless. Human you may be, but even we hold a power and potential that few ever discover within themselves. But I have trustworthy sources that tell me you'll be one of the lucky ones to find that." He grinned widely. It wasn't often he peppered his business presentations with humor.

Teagan laughed for a moment, then assumed her straight, 'professional' face, that made her look somewhat unapproachable to most. "I will return soon." she said, and in a flash she stood, shook her bosses' hand, and was out the door.

The wonderful thing, and the terrible thing about Teagan's place of business was that because of its exact position among the other buildings nearby, conversations and confrontations both were amplified. The echoes of screams, brawls, and explosions never failed to reach her window. And while it was sometimes very impossible to sleep, it helped her immensely when doing a report.

She had already become better at finding the source of the sounds, within an hour of hearing them. She wouldn't always arrive with the action still in full force, but she still found traces of the events from a meticulous investigation. It was better for her anyway, to come quietly after most instants- Mr. Fletcher had promised training in hand-to-hand combat soon, but unfortunately her trainer was late to starting their sessions. Once she could throw a punch perfectly every time, once she could wield a sword and bow and use them with precision, then maybe she'd be allowed to rush in to the various squabbles as they occurred.

For now, Teagan had finally been able to purchase the odd robes and garments of the natives that had always ignored her. With this disguise, she could at least walk around silently, unassuming, and avoid trouble. The only thing that could give her away was her voice. She'd still have to avoid people but at least for now it wouldn't look completely odd if she walked around by herself.

She decided to investigate the dark slum areas of the Machina division of the city. If there was ever a place for a great power and threat to hide, it would be here. Out of all the races, the Machina seemed to be the weakest in some ways. They relied on technology that was not of their own invention, to survive among the other races and compete with them. While other races had the ability to use magic, and some just the brute force of terrifying beats, the Machina were very much the underdog, at least in Teagan's eyes.

But she did not underestimate them. As diverse and seemingly underpowered as they might be to some, the Machina appeared to be the most resourceful. Teagan learned long ago that sometimes the only way to survive, is not by having the most, but by carefully and efficiently using whatever little you're left with. This was the main reason most of her small village had survived surprisingly well during the potato famines. Everyone then learned practically at birth, that conservation and innovation were life saving skills.

She walked quietly down a particular alley that caught her interest. She noticed that during the day, the walls were bare, the road beneath her feet empty and clean. As the sun set, suddenly from the few doors lining the alley, came locals, that would place a banner to the right of their doorway, then quickly run back inside. The banners contained symbols and text that Teagan could not make sense of. But she thought perhaps that this was a sort of underground method of journalism. Maybe the Machina were using these banners and strange decor to discuss the current events of the City, and the current political plans they were forming.

Oddly enough the Machina never approached her when they noticed her watching them place up their banners and signs. She figured they either assumed she was one of them and was just eager to read, or they knew she was an Outsider and couldn't comprehend what was going on. In any case, Teagan did try to avoid them seeing her, because she may have to take several days down these alleys.

One of the advantages to having Teagan go on such mission, was her memory. She never took her report with her, and she never needed scraps of paper to write notes on. After a few hours she could return to her room and immediately right down every detail she intended to store for later. At least this way, if she was ever caught and held by the Machina, they would have no proof that she was indeed studying them.

Realm of the dead? Not much of an answer, Avery thought. “So If,” he emphasized the hypothetical, “this is the realm of the dead and I am, as you say, dead what makes you so certain that you are not?”

Sheathing his dagger Avery kept step with Reed, he debated for a moment whether or not he should answer the additional questions or allow for an answer to his question; the conversation felt awkward to him. Well he could answer those questions with three words: “Elven, and Sentelle.” Avery was curious how Reed had understood his words and not known what language he spoke. Reed’s accent explained the difference between “Holy” and “Celestial.”

lol. thats ok. u were being a good person lol biggrin
User ImageShe spent three days walking down that one alley, and the ones close by, particularly at night. A unnerving wind would blow dust through them, and very often Teagan found it hard to see. Other than the colorful decor that would be displayed at night- the stone walls and floor were bare and boring. It looked almost as if these places had been abandoned for over fifty years. That in itself was highly suspicious to her. It was almost too deserted, too quiet, too dusty.

At the end of the third night, she'd gathered as much information as she could. For now, she could see no new banners, no new text. It was just as well she ended this now, because she noticed that tonight, a man that she'd seen on her first trip down here, looked rather unhappy that she'd returned. He did not approach her, but his heavy stare sent the message clear enough- she was done here, or else.

She returned to her home and office, in the tall building back near the Grand Plaza. After hours of writing in her room, she descended and gave a finished report to Samantha, as cheerful as she could. Sometimes she wondered if the perky desk clerk understood the weight of Mr. Fletcher's work. Maybe she did and carried herself like this anyway- and maybe that's why he'd chosen her as secretary.

Teagan was exhausted, but instead of returning to bed she made her way back to the smaller bar by the plaza. She found that sometimes drinking a bit before bed helped her not to sleepwalk. At this point, avoiding that would be wise, because God only knew what trouble she could get in, wandering the streets at night unconscious.

She walked in slowly to the Dead Man's Meet, and took a table closer to the bar. Something was off though. Something was...wrong.

Demon let out a growl that made Lita jump, it came from outside her.
'What kind is he!? T-That doesn't happen where we are from! No two legs exist anymore, unless the merge with humans!' Demon thought furiously. He had no idea what was going on and he didn't like it. Lita stayed quiet and willed him to control himself.
She nodded at him and lifted her mask off.
"I have weird eyes." She said blinking them once sadly, they made her feel ugly. The pupils were cat-like. Demon calmed instantly at that, he felt bad because he was the one who made her like it.
"But having a tail would be so much better." She said with a grin as she traced the design on the mask.

She nodded.
"It is fast, and deadly. I only use it if I have to." She said referring to her gun.

I'm going to move us a little bit so that we can catch up with what just happened in the casual RP

"That wasn't you." Pahkakino said with a small grin. Then, abruptly, his grin was gone and he was waving one hand, "Never mind. Your eyes though," he leaned down so his head was on her level. "are the same shape as mine." His two-pronged tail flicked up and near her face, "Tails have their uses, but what good are they without sight?" His fatherly instinct was kicking in.

There was much about this girl that made him yearn to reach out and hold her, to comfort her and tell her everything would be okay. That she could trust him.

The area was getting busy with the night time crowd, and after a moment, Pahkakino was fairly certain he could hear shouts coming from inside the building and wrecked ship. 'Never a dull moment in this place...' he thought wryly, sending out his mind for a little peek at the action.

Blinking a few times as the frenzy of voices rang in his head, the ruby demon shut out the distraction, and turned his attention back to Lita. 'But I will certainly be going in there to see what was going on.'

So I may have missed it, but did anyone pick up Riv's mask? I have a great idea for getting Pahka and Rivek to interact. ^~^

No, he hasn't.

Haha. Rivek is a re-animated corpse. So effectively - when the talisman of the mask is detached from his person... uh, nothing's working. He sees/feels/etc through magic :F

If the mask where to break his body would disintegrate.

Rivek...is gone....

Teagan frowned, and asked the stand-in barkeep for a double shot of gin. This was disappointing. After meeting her mysterious winged-man, after watching him for so long, she was eager to hear more about life here in the City. Since she'd already opened up to him once, there was no point in acting tough and cold. Perhaps they could share information and histories. Not only was this invaluable for work, but it would help her make sense of her own personal issues as well.

But he wasn't here! How very strange, since tonight would certainly be a night he'd be working. She felt uneasy about all this.

"Another shot, barkeep." she said, coldly.

Too bad for him, she'd have better manners if she wasn't worried about Rivek. This whole situation stunk of rotten produce. But she had nowhere near the energy she'd need to try and find him now. So she sat frustrated, waiting to see if perhaps the gin would give her energy. It never did, but miracles can happen right? At the very least it would take the pain away from her muscles, from running around all day.

That b*****d better be alright.

The pause in the other room did not last long as the beast once again lifted Rivek and carried him into the night. It could have been hours or it could have been minutes before the beast finally halted again, this time in the mouth of an alleyway. The alleyway was dark and reeked of spoiled garbage. Lurp set down his charge, more carefully this time, arranging his prone form on an empty box pallette. He lifted his head scenting the air and twitching his nose for signs of pursuit. Rivek had not stirred at all in the time Lurp had been carrying him. Lurp lowered his ear to the bartender's chest, listening. There was nothing! No pulse! For a moment Lurp panicked until it occurred to him... had he ever heard a pulse from Rivek before? He'd been going on the assumption that Rivek was human, but the wings kind of belied that didn't they? And it wasn't as if Lurp himself had a pulse... so maybe that didn't mean much... No, now that he had thought about it, he couldn't remember hearing a heart beat in Rivek before... so maybe there was hope.

Lurp growled in frustration. This form was inadequate. Quickly Lurp shifted into a more accustomed form. The beast disappeared from Rivek's view, and for a moment all he could see was a partial view of the night sky, the rest obscured by the alleyway on either side. The view might even be kind of nice if it wasn't suddenly blotted out by the head of a very large grey wolf. One gold eye stares down at Rivek, the other is a mass of tangled scar tissue. The wolf prods and sniffs, and then with marked hesitation LICKS all the way from Rivek's throat past his brow. Lurp waits, but she can taste nothing, smell nothing. Nothing different from what she had smelled on Rivek before. But then how closely had she been paying attention? It wasn't as if she knew Rivek terribly well. His wounds didn't look fatal. She licked at them, but there was no poison to be tasted.

The wolf whined. What was wrong?

Nothing for it then but to wait it out. If he was dead he would start smelling different somehow soon enough. The wolf arranged herself in front of Rivek in a defensive position. If anyone happened to look down the alleyway past the reeking garbage, all they would see is a large wolf whose posture and bearing said Come down this alley and I will mess your ********** up.

Once arranged Lurp gathered herself together. Different parts of Lurp's malleable flesh could perform different functions. There was no human word to quite describe them. Will called them her bits. Her pain bits and her tasting bits and her seeing bits. Lurp just called them her flesh. Now she gathered all her hearing flesh together, and shifted it. Hairs on the back of the wolf's tail enlongated, becoming impossibly thin and floating into the air as filaments that occasionally sparked with light.

In this way Lurp sat listening, gathering in coversations from several streets over. For thirty minutes she did this, but when there was still no word of pursuit, she drew the filaments back.

"Rivek, what do I do?" she said, her voice coming out a raspy growl through the wolf's throat.

((No worries Rivek, Lurp prefers her original recipe, not extra crispy. Stopping here and giving rivek a chance to mentally dialogue if he wants to, then Lurp is going to become Lily and notice the mask.))
