Welcome to .... the afterlife.
Your character has died... and arrived. Here. This is the setting of the competition. That means, the imaginary world that your character is going to play in for a little while during the competition rounds. You have to prove your character is amazing, and work for the prizes!
Where am I?
Fortress Cerxes is the central neutral city on the Plane of Serendipity. All kinds of strange things occur on Serendipity, but one of the wonders of it is the Fortress Cerxes, the huge floating civilization in the middle of the Plane, where the dead sometimes appear instead of moving on to their natural afterlifely destination.
How does this work?
This is a game, which has a story.... and you will need to know at least a little of what is going on in order to play each round properly. By knowing a little, I mean applying your character to the situation with imagination and playing the rounds according to the rules.
All you really need to do is pretend a little. Its a little like Survivor. Imagine your character has died and arrived here in this world. What would they think? What would they do? Think about those things as you fill out the entry form, and as you participate in the rounds.
Can I get the short and simple version?
You make an entry. And compete with that character in three mini games against everyone else. Each round less people move on to the next as competition is eliminated until we have our winner.
----
Note: You WILL NOT be required to know each detail of all the entrants, of any of the RP that goes on, nor any of the mini games, nor official RP sessions within the thread. And it will not increase your chances of winning as none of the above will be connected to the competition rounds. RPing in the thread in the world of Serendipity is optional.
How to Enter
* Entries must be submitted by August 10th, 2011. No late entries accepted. Please plan accordingly - don't wait til the last minute and have something come up!
* Entries must be completely original. No one else can 'make your entry' for you. You can commission artists to spice up your entry with imagery.
* Entries must be made using the form below and within the limitations. You cannot 'add' to the form. Sample entries below!
* Submission Deadline: August 10th, 2011
* YOU must PM your entry to Athiera, even if you post it in the thread!! ^_^ thank you!

The Setting - Fortress Cerxes
Center of the Plane of Serendipity

Center of the Plane of Serendipity

Welcome to Serendipity, the plane of dumb luck, basically.
The Planes of the Universe stretch far and wide, they are not worlds, but rather multi-dimensional amorphous masses of the element that makes the plane up. When the Universe was created, it was sort of messy. Some of what was used to make it laid around for a while until it formed up into the Planes.
Serendipity, like most Planes, is filled with endless skies and populated with floating land masses.
Travel to Serendipity for the average Planes-walker is quite a feat. The adjoining planes are no joke and should be tread with caution. Mostly those who arrive here, have done so by cosmic accident in one way or another. Especially if they lived a very charmed, but perhaps foolish, life.
Due to this the denizens of Serendipity are quite diverse, however there are natural occurring lives here. Most planes boast creatures of magic, and Serendipity is no exception. The race that dominates the plane is Dragons though, and they have actually carved out a nation for themselves.
Fortress Cerxes - the Court of Balance
Centered above the proximal apex of the nations, this floating Fortress is the long standing structure which houses the balance of each of the major nations' governments. The area is a common ground for leaders to meet and discuss issues with diplomacy. Seats at Court are granted by the nations' leaders in strict accordance with the laws of Cerxes, and members keep peace in mind while negotiating the needs of their nations.
Lady Cerxes watches over the proceedings as the first outsider in Serendipity. The Lady is largely a mystery as little is known about her...
The Afterlife
Because of the nature of the Plane of Serendipity, strange and frequent occurrences take place all over the Plane, but most especially within Fortress Cerxes. In fact, before the fortress was built this phenomenon occurred. It is part of the reason the Fortress came to be located in the place it is.
One of the strange happenings is the rebirth of the dead and their arrival at the floating island which the fortress now sits on. Cerxes is filled with people who have passed on from the mortal realm, but did not make it to their intended heavenly destination - for whatever reason when they died, they arrived here. Over time a real society has grown with its own customs, especially for greeting new arrivals, deemed Outsiders by the Planesborn. It is strongly believed that new arrivals should be handled carefully, as there is no knowing what sort of person has arrived - great care is given to making them welcome and helping them settle in.
Most Outsiders feel that it is best to let go of the past, as only great wizards or powerful creatures even have a chance of returning to their own realm and dimension - and no knowledge is ever shared about how or if it is possible to leave Serendipity. The society of Cerxes will be greatly reluctant if not completely against acknowledging that they died before coming here, and will avoid discussing even the new arrival's demise - in the most polite way of course.

Meet the Main Characters
Lady of Cerxes
Little is known about the mysterious lady who some claim was the first outsider to appear at Cerxes along with three companions who have also shrouded their identity. The Lady resides at the top of Cerxes far above the central platform. Only those with the gift of flight or other means to ascend the skies can make it to her private domain, the spire of Palace Itzel.
The Three Princes
The three companions whose identity remain hidden and are simply known as the Three Princes. They are considered to be the will of the Lady, powerful and cunning men (Although it is a matter of some debate whether or not they are indeed men, no one ever refers to them as princesses. ) and blessed with a most ridiculous amount of luck. When someone loses in a game or some other endeavor it is often said they they must have been playing against one of the Princes in disguise.
Danique of Espirenze
The heroine of the campaign... or rather, Kimaya's main character for OOC. She has arrived in Cerxes and has discovered her demise... that she is dead and that she has no idea where her Dragon and great friend have gone. She is on a search to find out if Dezrek did indeed die with her, and if not, how she can return to him.
Great Mistress
Disguised as a Plane-Travelling Sorceress, Erinia, otherwise known as Great Mistress, has managed to get the Lady of Cerxes interested in her enough to merit guest rights in the palace. Erinia is on her own mission as usual, and has been targeting Danique, as usual, to gain what remains a mystery at this time.
D.Blakely
Erinia's current lackey. He's been spying on Danique and stirring up trouble wherever she has been.
Captain Laresh
Sky Captain of the Sky Guard of the Peace, Laresh takes his job somewhat seriously, for a fiend. He's winged, grey skinned and considers himself to be rakishkly handsome - of course that can be considered subjective.
Maxfred Mordilberd
The innkeep of the Worldspanners Inn. Its his fulltime job to welcome Outsiders and try to help them adjust. He has a platoon of people to help him, but sometimes has issues spending too much of his funding.

The Plane of Serendipity
The Plane
The Planes are vast and open spaces... they have their own properties, shape and nature. Serendipity is formed of vast quantities of destructive and chaotic magic which travel the plane in all types of different forms: vapor, liquid, etc. Refuge from the elements is hard to find, and much of the plane is wild and untamed - although many of the natural inhabitants are quite at home in that environment.
Natural landmasses are the most stable places to live on the plane for most species. The chaotic magic in a solid form is much more contained - like in rock. The landmasses float naturally buoyed by energies vying for the same space. Often, however parts will fall away or separate, or even crumble inward on itself in places where the chaotic energies are most violent.
Flying creatures are most at home in Serendipity and many of the indigenous species which have survived the longest do possess some form of flight. Other species must adapt quickly to this or find themselves isolated or struggling to survive even.
The Five Great Nations
Although the Plane of Serendipity is a chaotic and wild place, the influx of Outsiders, and the more intelligent races combined have evolved to the point where civilization is much prized and sought after. However, everyone's idea of civilization varies greatly in such a place as this.
Five of the great nations, which have neighboring territories near the center of Serendipity's vortex (and far more civilized location) have formed an alliance to try to reach the goal of a peaceful advance. On the edges of these nations, and farther out beyond them lies the chaos and dangers of the wild, and one of the goals of the alliance is to spread further their civilizations and control the deadly elements which reside alongside each of their nations.
The five nations are all indigenous save the Machina and the Unliving.
The Dragons
Magical creatures are a natural occurrence on Serendipity. Dragons have are as intelligent and creative as man, and have naturally progressed to the point where many of them enjoy the company of the other races.
On the highest altitude of the plane, Dragonkind flourishes, living amidst the towering mountains and wide skies of their homeland. Not many venture here and return to speak of it, and very little is known about how the Dragons live in their own environment.
The Celestials
The heavenly humanoid race that inhabits much of the Planes, in addition to Serendipity. Originally separated as angels and demons (Outsider terms for their kind), it has become quite normal to refer to them as one collective species.
Celestials can be found almost anywhere in Serendpity, they are all winged and are rather advanced in terms of civilization. Their nation boasts several large cities and welcomes Outsiders into their society - as lessers, of course.
The Elementals
A race sprung from the elements of Serendipity. Elementals are the humanoid embodiment of the elemental creatures which make up a huge amount of the indigenous species on the Plane. Many consider them simple minded and not quite as human as they appear - however they are determined to make their home civilized alongside the others.
They have a few small cities and one large capital. Outsiders may find their homeland uncomfortable and in some places impossible to survive in.
The Machina
Along the fringes of the wild farlands, Outsiders who found themselves unwelcome in other places, banded together to survive. Many humanoid types make up this nation, coming from many different worlds and times. To live, these people have turned to technology as best as they can in a place where the elements are not quite what they were on their own worlds.
Centuries of evolving gave birth to a technology powered by the chaotic magic element on Serendipity. The technology and the comforts it has to offer makes it much sought after, and it has become a bargaining chip for the nation of Outsiders, called The Machina by many, to carve their place amongst the other nations.
The Unliving
The Machina were not the only Outsiders to band together to survive. The early ones chose to try to learn to live in harmony with the chaotic magics rather than to try to control them. A dark and mysterious society was formed that did what it saw it must to survive, which later took the shape of the Cabalistic Nation that it is now. Necromancers and warlocks who have lived far longer than normal beings and who know much of the secret powers of the Plane make up this smallest of nations.
Suspicion and prejudice abound are directed at the Unliving, as they are referred to - their lives are deemed unnatural and are rife with whispers about what price must be paid for such long lives, among other things - the secretiveness of the Unliving only support the stories about them. Their place amongst the civilized races is questioned by many, and they are trusted by no one.

Casual and Scheduled RP
Scheduled RP
These are run on a selected day/time and are announced ahead of time. Kimaya has been running them on Sundays, but may run on a Thursday. There is no set schedule for these RPs, and any of the Staff may choose to run one.
The sessions: Official Scheduled RP History
Casual RP
Ongoing at all times! There is no set time for these and are described in a bit more detail below. One of the RP Managers has become pretty active in having a casual RP going: Luna-et-Noctis.
Link to the Official Casual RP History
What is it?
Casual RP is roleplay within the thread without moderation. That means without a GM (Gamemaster) - basically with no RP rules. You and whoever you are roleplaying with will be responsible for resolving any interactions you have without guidance.
note - this does not mean that disruptive roleplaying won't be moderated. :3
How do I join the casual RP?
By RPing your character's arrival. That could mean right when they arrive in Serendipity, it could mean they've been there a while and join an already playing RP group, or anything really. You decide how to RP their entrance. There will be a lot of people who are a part of the contest RPing their own characters there, so feel free to follow their example.
Below is additional information that may be useful for helping you to join in addition to a prompt for those who play best with a starting point.
Scheduled RP
Scheduled RP can be considered Casual RP where there is moderation and a storyline event and active NPCs. The main competition is separate from any of the scheduled or casual RP, although their stories are interwoven, certainly. It is not required to participate in the scheduled or casual RP for any of the competition.
How can I talk to to the NPCs?
Arriving at the fortress, you sort of decide what your characters do. NPCs cannot really be around all the time, so feel free to make your character interact with other RPers. Although I do not recommend it, because it may take some time for the RP to resolve, If you really want to interact with certain NPCs, make a post and wait for the NPCs controller to reply.
If you want to casual RP in the thread I recommend trying to arrange it so you are somewhere that you dont need to interact with NPCs - like sitting somewhere in town, or working at the archery range, or drinking at the tavern, or flying off into the blue yonder... that way someone can find where you are and come to RP if they choose.
I want to control some NPCs!
Sure, PM me. If you have an idea and feel like adding to the fun, Im up for almost anything. I will try to go with your idea, but it may require modification. We can talk about it first.
So there are NO rules? Like.. my character can DO anything?
Learning to moderate your own character is a valuable and healthy online RP practice! If your character's a destructive God, for instance, find a reason why they aren't destroying everything, or perhaps make up some complication on Serendipity that might be causing them to have limited access to their powers. Weave it into your RPing with others and you might be surprised what interesting storylines come out of a little creative self moderation.
Imagine if your super powered character forgot who they were when they got there? Or maybe had an experience right before their death which has them hesitant to take action. Maybe they arrived with a strange sickness that causes them to get very ill when they use their powers? Your imagination is the limit.
If you don't want to moderate your character and they are bent on killing everyone and destroying the palace adding little of RP value (disruptive behavior), it is highly likely that they will find themselves on their very own Serendipity plane living in a dream.
That doesn't mean your characters can't attack the NPCs or have a big destructive battle, though. If its part of your RP anf you aren't harassing anyone or being disruptive on purpose I encourage it! If things get a little crazy and buildings are destroyed, NPCs are killed, well Serendipity is the Plane of Dumb Luck, we'll think of something - or heck, it might just make the RP more interesting wink
Moderated Areas of Interest
There are places that might be really hard to get into RP wise and are moderated a little more. My recommendation if you want to head into the main council chamber where the Lady of Cerxes and the Senators are would be to try to be realistic.
I'll do my best to play along if I have time (I probably won't beyond the scheduled RPs), like if your character teleports right into the Lady's lap it could be interesting, but if it ends up being too disruptive or if I have to go I may decide Lady Cerxes chooses to deal with the characters involved by putting them to sleep in their beds waking from a strange dream. Please be ok with this, it is meant to keep things somewhat organized.
For more information regarding the setting, the NPCs, and all of the areas available please refer to the settings section.
Prompt
Your eyes slowly open, the lids feeling like heavy weights are pushing them down. Too bright light floods your vision as you try to get a look at your surroundings.... the last thing you remember... but, for some reason... it is difficult to recall. Imagery flashes behind your squinting eyelids and slips away without taking form.
As your eyes adjust, all around you... people walk along a well kept white stone plaza. A streaming ornate fountain is in the middle of the circular area, the edges of the space surrounded by what appear to be market stalls and shops, restaurants, and behind you a large building with a large painting of a moonshaped planet which reads:The Worldspanners Inn.
Curiously, the people keep walking past, dressed in all manner of unfamiliar clothing and hairstyles, barely giving you a glance. Some of them almost appear not to notice, although an old man dressed in outrageously decorated robes gives you a kindly and oddly sympathetic look.
Where are you? How did you get here....

- The entry must be 100% your own - meaning you must "own" (have purchased or created) the artwork or writing if any is used. You cannot use copyrighted works to make your entry. This goes to writing, art, music, whatever. Artwork and writing that you created must also follow gaia's tos concerning art.
- You may RP your character in the thread. You may discuss your character in detail in the thread.
- Collab Characters are allowed but you may only enter this contest with one character, collab or otherwise.
- Entries which do not follow guidelines will be clarified by me and asked to resubmit.
- Contestants submitting more than one entry under a mule account will be disqualified.
- Submission Deadline: July 31st, 2011
- YOU must PM your entry to Athiera, even if you post it in the thread!! ^_^ thank you!
------------------
Thread Rules
- No Elitism.
- Please respect other people in the thread
- Please do not critique artwork posted in the thread unless asked to do so, especially if its art by my guests.
- Please do not "enforce" rules with severe methods. If you see someone breaking a rule and want to help them make the correct choice (like not submit an entry using a luis royo image for their character picture) please do so in a diplomatic way or better, PM Kimaya or Athiera.
-----------------------------
Comments and Critiques on Entries
- Please do not critique unless the poster asks for it. Making positive comments are welcome.
- For comments and critiques, it is my request that you make at least one positive comment before or after a critique of areas which need work. I am not asking you to lie. If you really cannot think of at least one positive thing to say about a submission then its best not to say anything at all and go work on your critique method instead.
- Please do not run in here and accuse people of cliche characters and mary sues or copies of other characters or whatever else might come up that goes along with this sort of elitist behavior. This is a contest, but I don't want it to become extremely serious.

The Rounds
The rounds and what happens in them are semi secret - meaning, you will all know when the round comes what it is. But they are the heart of the contest. Entering your fabulous character is the first step. After you make an entry... its time to prove your character a little more. Round by Round.
The rounds do not require writing skill - by this I mean you won't be judged on your talent in prose. But you will need to be able to convey the concepts about your character and those ideas will be judged and compared to the other contestants for merit.
Round One
20 competitors are selected for Round One from the list of entries. Round one will be the first step in showing more off about your character. Expect some form of questionnaire.
Round Two
10 semi-finalists move on to Round Two. Competitors can expect to make decisions on how their character might respond in given situations and expand upon that.
Round Three
5 finalists go forward here to have their characters pitted against each other in an RP style exchange. How characters win, lose or not get involved and why will be judged here.

The Staff
(In politically correct ABC Order - this list is PENDING ACCEPTANCE and subject to change)
Our Judges
Cartagia
One of the judges for the Legends thread - an OC charity contest by Thornshield, Cartagia is also a writer and our resident tea drinking Brit, she will some day have a doll for every character she has ever made, and they will basically be their own small nation.
Riot
Comic artist, musician and amazing husband to Kimaya. Riot has spent much of his adult life being in prison to Kimaya's storytelling: DnD roleplay sessions... and he is still surviving!
Vilhelmina
Aspiring graphic storyteller, and amazing artist, Vilhelmina! When she is not researching in the lab and writing incredibly incomprehensible to normal people theses, we managed to get her to judge for us here.
Woefulinfinity
We were too afraid to write anything about Woe (besides that she judged the first OOC), so we let her tell it herself:
Hi, my name is Woeful. I work professionally at an animation studio. Chances are, you've seen my name in a movie. I don't settle for mediocre. Nice to meet you
Zienkyer
One of the judges for the Legends thread - the OC charity contest on which OOC2 was inspired by, Zienkyer is a storyteller and concept artist, and in general an awesome person to RP and hang out with.
