Enchantedjourney: An OC Art Contest

Hey! Welcome to my first ever art contest. I'm really proud to finally be making this; I've been saving up for the prizes since Christmas 2006, and have only recently finished buying them all. And now you lucky artists get to compete for them! xD

The characters I'd like you all to draw are from a quiz series of mine, written (or begun, anyway) in 2004 and never finished. This contest is named after the quiz, which was called Enchantedjourney. Looking back on it, the setting was terrible - it was basically a cross between the settings of Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha and Yu Yu Hakusho (my obsessions at the time) - and the plot was a little cliched, but I was and still am in love with the characters. So I've since decided to take just the characters and create a cyberpunk, virtual reality story with them in. At the moment, it's a similar concept to the anime .hack (an online virtual reality game), although I don't know how it will develop in the future.

Right now, I'm sort of between things - I haven't worked out many details of the game that the story will centre around, so apologies for the vagueness, and I've had to revise some aspects of my characters to fit in with the new setting, which will be either modern or futuristic as opposed to mediaeval fantasy. But it shouldn't affect your entries too much, I hope. :3

In the next few posts you'll find the contest rules, submission form, bios for all of my characters - both main and side - and a list of the prize categories and prizes.

Character Profiles: Kaeme

Username: Kaeme

Real Name: Kathryn Emerson

Age: 16

Location: Oregon, USA

Server: ENG

Personality: Kat is a chatty, bubbly and enthusiastic person. She will happily make friends with anyone who seems lonely, although her exuberance tends to unnerve most people. She is also fairly nosy, just because she finds people so interesting that she wants to know everything about them, but despite her chattiness, she can be trusted to keep a secret - she isn't a gossip, per se. When playing the game, Kat much prefers socialising to levelling up, and so her battle level is only moderate. She envies her roleplay character, Kaeme, because she is much braver than Kat, and more like the anime and manga heroines whom Kat admires.

Appearance: Offline, Kat is normal-looking: she is of medium height, with brown hair and green eyes, and is moderately pretty. Online, she has deliberately designed her avatar to look like her beloved anime heroines: Kaeme has violet hair and eyes, with her hair done up at the sides of her head, and she wears bright, girly colours like pink, purple and sky blue. In other words, feel free to design her some Magical Schoolgirl-styled outfits. You know the sort of thing.

Bio: Kat began playing the game at the age of 14. Now, at 16, she has decided to start a blog describing her virtual adventures - thinking that there wouldn't be much of note to write about. She turned out to be completely wrong!

Poses: I haven't got much in mind for Kat, although I think that her poses are likely to be quite comical. In the game, she is usually found talking someone's ear off, or struggling with wielding a too-heavy sword in a battle situation that she got into by accident. She's not always ditzy, but she has her moments.

Character Profiles: Kirikozou

Username: Kirikozou

Real Name: No idea xD;;

Age: 17

Location: England

Server: ENG

Personality: Kirikozou is a very sweet, shy guy. Online he manages to lose some of his shyness, especially when roleplaying as his character, but it's still there underneath. He hates confrontation and tries to avoid arguments between his friends, though that's not always possible with friends like Alyssa and Tomara. Although his personality might seem like a bit of an insubstantial doormat, when angry Kirikozou has quite an explosive temper. Fortunately, it takes a lot to push him that far.

Appearance: Kirikozou's online and offline appearances are similar. In both cases, he is tall, nearing 6 feet in height, of slim build, and has red hair, though offline it is short, whereas online, it reaches a little below his shoulders. Offline, he has blue eyes; online, his eyes are an interesting mix between purple and grey that Kat calls "shadow-coloured". His avatar is a little more muscular than his real self, because he plays a swordsman.

In terms of outfit, you can do what you like. In my quiz series, Kirikozou wore a Meiji swordsman outfit similar to that of Rurouni Kenshin, so you can draw him in that if you want, but I'm really looking for something new. As you can see from the references, his favourite colour is green.

Bio: For Kirikozou, the game is an escape from real life, and so when things begin to go wrong and he becomes a wanted user, he takes it quite hard. At home, Kirikozou's parents are strict and have high expectations for him academically, so he spends a lot of time on schoolwork, and clubs outside of school. All the rest of his time is spent online, or occasionally at Tomara's house. At night, Kirikozou has trouble sleeping, and so he will often come online in the early hours of the morning.

Poses: I'd like to see Kirikozou in a fighting pose of some sort, possibly sparring with either Tomara or Alyssa (his weapon of choice is a sword). He's also pretty much a bishie, so I'd like to see pictures of him that will make me go "Aww!" or heart - though don't make him too effeminate! He's still male!

Character Profiles: Dakko

Username: Dakko

Real Name: Haven't decided yet ^^;

Age: 20

Location: Wellington, New Zealand

Server: ENG

Personality: Dakko is easy-going and eager to please. He's not very good at standing up for himself, and at school he was bullied a lot. He's the sort of person who's easy to make fun of, but who never rises to the bait and gets angry.

Appearance: Online, Dakko's avatar has messy mint-green hair and pink eyes. Offline, Dakko has fairly neat brown hair and grey eyes. Apart from that, the two's appearances are similar: Dakko's avatar is dressed in the same sort of clothes he usually wears, which are white shirts with brown/grey trousers, and sometimes a black jacket or waistcoat.

Bio: Dakko and Kaeme became friends when the latter had just started playing the game. They began at roughly the same time, which enabled Dakko to pass on what he'd learnt so far, and then discover the rest along with her. However, he doesn't have as much time to play the game as Kaeme does, so they can only play together on the odd occasion. Dakko's hobbies are painting, and fixing things - usually electronic devices, and occasionally vehicles. He has a little sister who has just started playing the game, and who persuaded her big brother into showing her the ropes.

Poses: Dakko is a complete klutz, so draw him crashing into things, tripping over or just sporting the injuries he gets from doing those things. You could also draw him in the real world, painting or fixing things or playing with his little sister.

Character Profiles: Liona

Username: Liona

Real Name: I'm not sure x3

Age: 19

Location: Osaka, Japan

Server: JP/ENG

Personality: A lot of Liona's personality is like her aunt's: calm and knowledgeable, not to mention a talented programmer. However, she can also be quite mischievous, and sometimes decides to take other people's problems into her own hands, for example when she decided that Tomara didn't show his emotions enough, and altered his character data so that his hair changes colour with his emotions.

Appearance: Online, Liona has long, white hair and blue eyes; she wears flowing, mystical outfits that you would imagine a spellcaster from a fantasy novel wearing. Offline, she dresses normally (so no extremes of Japanese fashion, thank you xD) and has shoulder-length black hair and brown eyes.

Bio: Liona lives at home with her two parents and adopted baby sister, who was orphaned in an earthquake. She mostly plays on the JP server, but also visits the English server to practice her English. She has a job as a programmer, which allows her to spend a lot of time on the computer and thus on the game. She also takes on minor hacking jobs on the sly, for some extra money. Besides the programming that she does as a job, Liona is working on her own project: a way to exploit the link between people's real-world selves and their personas in the game. The hair-colour-changing program she used on Tomara is a product of this.

Poses: Liona's character in the game is a spellcaster, so I'd love to see her drawn casting spells, or just generally looking "magical". (Whatever you define 'magical' to be x3) You could also draw her in the real world, hacking into a computer or doing some sort of programme... or just generally looking pretty xD

Character Profiles: Tomara

Username: Tomara

Real Name: Tom

Age: 17

Location: England

Server: ENG

Personality: Tom is a generally silent person, who can appear a little sullen and moody at times. He isn't good at expressing himself with words, and prefers the company of people who don't say much either. He gets irritated easily, but rarely becomes really angry.

Appearance: To begin with, Tom's avatar had grey/silver hair, but thanks to the virus that Liona implanted in his character data, it now changes colour according to his mood; he can't control it. His eyes are also grey online. His outfits both on- and off-line are simple and nondescript, in shades of brown and grey. His avatar has bare feet, and so could probably pass as a mediaeval peasant or traveller. Offline, he has black hair and blue eyes, and stands at a height of about 5'3. Online, he is a couple of inches taller.

Bio: Tom is Kirikozou's next door neighbour. They go to the same school, and have known each other since they were little, so it was only fitting that they also discovered the game together. He isn't as willing to admit it as Kirikozou, but Tom also enjoys roleplaying his character, and since his older sister (to whom he is very close) left home, Tom started spending more and more time gaming. Tom's parents both work, which means that he has a lot of freedom to do what he wants without them knowing.

Poses: Like Kirikozou, Tom is often found fighting inside the game, so draw him in a fighting pose, perhaps sparring with either Kirikozou or Dakko (who, although not much of a fighter in or out of the game, is keen to improve his battle skills). He mostly fights with martial arts, although will sometimes pick up a sword to fight with Kirikozou.

I'd also love to see him with different-coloured hair, depending on what emotion(s) he's feeling. (This is only in the game, of course). To begin with, his hair just has streaks of colour in it, which become solid colour as the emotion increases. Tomara's hair-colour-code is: red for anger, orange for annoyance, yellow/gold for happiness, green for jealousy (when Leo is flirting with Liona biggrin ), blue for sadness and purple for confusion. If you want to draw an emotion that isn't listed, ask me and I'll tell you what it'd be.

Character Profiles: Alyssa

Username: Alyssagirl

Real Name: Alyssa Gladius

Age: 17

Location: Arizona, USA

Server: ENG/ES

Personality: Alyssa has a very bold, dominating personality. She's the kind of person who stands out in a crowd, and who isn't afraid to try everything at least once. She's a daredevil, and a merciless flirt who thoroughly enjoys being able to twist men around her little finger. She also enjoys teasing Essie a great deal. Although Alyssa has a more serious side, it's not often seen.

Appearance: Alyssa's online and offline appearances are almost identical, the only difference being that her hair online is deep navy, whereas offline it is black. She deliberately designed her avatar to look like herself in real life, and takes great pleasure in informing people in the game that this is what she really looks like. Both inside and outside of the game, she has long, dark, straight hair, reddish-brown eyes, tanned skin and a curvy figure. Her height is about 5'10 or 11.

In terms of outfit, she again wears similar things online to offline. Her outfits are usually close-cut and revealing, and white, black or deep red in colour. Her online outfit is along the lines of the second reference (although don't just copy that when designing for her. I like originality!). Just think kind of battle-girl/warrior gear.

Bio: Alyssa is half Spanish, half American, and lived in Spain for a time. She speaks both languages fluently, and so frequents both the Spanish and the English servers.

Poses: Something sexy! Alyssa's quite an exhibitionist, as you may have guessed, so you might draw her striking a sexy-model pose or something similar. No hentai, although tasteful nudity is fine. She's also a fighter, so as with Kirikozou and Tomara, draw her in a battle pose or maybe sparring with Kirikozou or Essie. Her weapon of choice is a thin, rapier-like sword.

Username: Enchanted Sleeper

Real Name: ??? (Kat nicknamed him 'Essie' for the sake of ease)

Age: ???

Location: Inside the game

Server: --

Personality: 'Stubborn' and 'secretive' are the main words to describe Essie. Both inside and outside of the game, he does what he wants, when he wants and if he doesn't want to tell something, he won't. Although he doesn't out-and-out mistrust people on sight, he's wary of the world in general because inside the game, the administrators are out to get him and outside it, everything is strange and unknown.

Appearance: (This is an excerpt from my story, describing Essie the first time he appears, from Kaeme's point of view)

Essie

I zoomed in on the user. He looked pretty normal; he had long, ruby-red hair and an innocent, almost angelic face. If Kirikozou hadn’t said ‘he’, I would have mistaken him for a girl! As it was, he appeared to be a young teenager, around 13 or 14. He was dressed in black, slightly scruffy clothes that seemed more detailed than those of the average user, and his feet were bare. There was a gold locket - or similar sort of thing - around his neck which glowed slightly. His eyes were closed, and his chest rose up and down a little. IRL, I would have said he was asleep, but I didn’t think that was possible inside the game.

The only detail that the excerpt doesn't mention is that he is very short, about 5'2" in height. He looks identical in real life to his online self, since he is converted directly from AI to real person. (I'm still working on how, though x3)

Bio: Alyssa, Kirikozou and Tomara discovered the Enchanted Sleeper whilst exploring an underground passageway in the game. He is an Artificial Intelligence, or AI, who to begin with was permanently asleep. After quite some time of being transferred around with the group (otherwise he would have been deleted by a system administrator, if discovered), he woke up and was able to interact with the others like an ordinary user. Finally, the group managed to find a way to materialise him in the real world, and now he lives with Alyssa. :3

Poses: He's not called The Enchanted Sleeper for nothing, so I'd love to see him drawn either nodding off to sleep or asleep *cough*inAlyssa'slap*cough*. He will sometimes be found fighting, usually sparring with Alyssa using two gold-hilted throwing daggers as his weapons. Apart from that, anything cute is sure to win you brownie points <3 Either chibi or normal proportions is fine by me. He goes red very easily, so don't forget that detail :3

Username: outlaw771

Real Name: Leo Johnson

Age: 21

Location: Cairns, Australia

Server: ENG

Personality: Charming and self-confident, Leo is both a ladies' man and a bit of a playboy. He has a predatorial streak, and enjoys stalking girls with pretty avatars in the game, particularly those who appear naive and helpless. He's bisexual, but normally goes for girls.

Bio: Leo's stalking hobby means he switches accounts frequently, both to keep from being recognised and because he keeps getting bans and warnings. His username is always a variation on the word 'outlaw', since he reckons that women tend to go for rebel types. He picked Liona as one of his stalking targets, and was interested by the fact that she didn't report him or appear particularly bothered by his following her. (Little did he know that Liona was using him to test-drive a new program). However, when Leo tried to make a move on her, he came up against Tomara and ended up losing to him in a fight, whereupon he decided that Liona 'wasn't his type' anyway.

In the original quiz series, I intended for Leo and Dakko to become a couple (though I never got round to writing it), and although I haven't worked out how that relationship fits into the new version yet, I'd still like some couple art of them wink

Location: Kyoto, Japan

Personality: Calm, wise and reliable; a mother figure. She doesn't have any children of her own, but acts like a parent to Liona (who is her niece in real life) and her friends whilst they're online, cautioning them against unsavoury characters and occasionally advising them on real-life problems.

Bio: Yamokuna is an experienced player who has been playing the game since its earliest version. She has many contacts who are hard-core gamers and hackers, many of whom owe her favours because she helped them out in the past.

References: None yet, but here is her introductory paragraph from the original quiz series:

Instead, the woman who opens the door looks like a middle-aged hippie. She has blonde-white hair with two plaits (braids) going round either side to meet at the back, with tiny flowers woven into them. She's wearing a white blouse with a pink flower on it, and a long blue skirt which reaches the floor.

Real Name: Zinnia Woods

Age: 16

Location: Auckland, New Zealand

Personality: Zinnia is constantly cheerful, often hyperactive, and best in small doses. She prefers to look on the bright side of things.

Bio: In the original quiz series, Xynnia was a friend of Kaeme's from school, and (eventually) Dakko's girlfriend. Then when it transpired that Dakko preferred men (which I had nothing to do with x3), she became his cousin. I haven't figured out how she fits into the new version yet, if at all, but I thought I'd put her in as a side character anyway.

Personality: Freya is Dakko's sister, who just started playing the game and cajoled her big brother into showing her the ropes.

Bio: Freya adores and looks up to her big brother immensely, and found a way to cope with him leaving home to go to university by joining the game and talking and adventuring with him online.

Couple Profiles

Kirikozou/Kaeme: Kirikozou and Kaeme are quite a 'sweet' couple, and so are likely to be doing things like holding hands, kissing without tongues, or adventuring together in the game. You can draw them together in the real world or the game.

Tomara/Liona: Pretty much the same as Kirikozou/Kaeme, although Liona's mischievous streak might surface from time to time - read into that what you will.

Essie/Alyssa: Heheheh. Alyssa's the dominant one in this relationship, and she is very naughty indeed. No out-and-out hentai, please, but sexy is loved. So is blushing Essie. xD This is my request thread for OC art of Essie and Alyssa, and in the third post you can find some of my favourite poses for the two, both sexy and otherwise.

Dakko/Leo: Leo is the dominant one in their relationship, so he makes all the moves. That's pretty much all you need to know - that and to remember Gaia TOS. So no buttsecks unless you can make it PG-13 x3 (No, that isn't a challenge. Or is it?)

Best Group Picture (3 or more) – Celebrity Date and Spirit Falcon

I would love to see some group pictures of all of the seven, either in the game or in real life. Bear in mind the personality of each when considering whether they're likely to be playing up to the 'camera', refusing to pose, or too busy doing something else (read into that what you will :3) to notice there's a picture being taken. So to speak.
