It is a breathtaking and awe-inspiring moment, those few minutes when you look up into the sky and the light of the sun or moon is briefly stifled into obscurity. Eclipses have often been the advent of society-changing events, portents of imminent doom, messages of forthcoming luck, and everything in between. To eclipse is to overshadow something, or someone's, light, if only for a brief moment. To be eclipsed, well...many a grudge has no doubt been harbored from such an event, for no one likes having their limelight stolen away. Whether it is a portent of the doomsday to come or a simple fading into obscurity, the power of such events is awe-inspiring indeed.

Welcome to .:Eclipse:., my second art contest and the first contest I've run solo. Being an art whore, I'm always looking for art of my characters, but lately I've been wanting to get some pictures of a few in particular. So since I'd been planning on running another one anyways, and my upcoming birthday seemed to be the perfect kickoff time, I decided to go for it.

Artists, I hope you'll find my characters interesting enough to give them a whirl. Bumpers, please feel free to come on in! All I ask is that you bump reasonably (i.e. enough to keep the thread up top, but I'd rather not have to swim through pages upon pages of bumps to find entries xd ). Chatters are always welcome and loved! The only thing I ask is no fighting and keep it within the ToS. Simple enough, eh?

Judging/Awards Ceremony: Thursday November 8th Between 7p-9p EST(subject to change depending on my work schedule!)

Contest Rules

1. Each entry must be of one of the four listed characters. They must be the main focus of the picture if they are depicted with other characters. Please note they may only be drawn with other characters/NPCs of interest listed in their pose suggestions, if any.
   
2. Each entry MUST be the original work of the artist submitting it. This means if I find out you are theiving someone else's art or using another person's work without their explicit permission, you will be disqualified and most definitely reported for art theft! Collabs are ok so long as the line artist and colorist are have agreed to work together on the piece. I don't mind you using stock for whatever purpose (whether as reference or for manipulations (but see below), but please be considerate of the stock artists who provide it for you.
   
   
   • Yes, someone else may enter on your behalf, but the same rules apply. I must have their explicit written permission and also a way to contact them to ensure there are no cases of art theft.
     
   • No previous works done for me may be reentered, and no taking a previous picture you did and editing it to look like my character or the like, please.
   
   
3. All pieces must be turned in by their respective deadlines which will be listed above. Any work turned in late will not be qualified for judging.
   
4. Doll and avatar edits are not eligible for the main prize but will instead have a mini catagory of their own. I don't wish to exclude doll artists as I've seen some spectacular stuff done with them, but dolls and avatar edits aren't really the focus of this contest.
   
   • Photomanipulations are ok, but you MUST be able to present me with each stock artist's written permission to use their stock for this purpose and all photos used must be credited in readable print on the picture. Photomanipulations will have their own mini catagory and will not be eligible for the main prizes.
     
   • Stories and poetry are also acceptable, however as with dolls they are really not what this contest is geared towards and so will only have their own mini catagory for anyone interested. They will not be eligible for the main prizes.
     
   • The catagories for dolls and avatar edits, photomanipulations, and written works may be expanded upon if there is enough interest at my discretion.
   
   
5. Each entry is eligible to win one prize and one prize only. I judge from the largest catagory down, so as a picture wins in a catagory, it will be eliminated from winning in other catagories. You are more than welcome to submit multiple entries to increase your chances of winning different prizes. To be fair, however, if you win one of the top three prizes, then you will be ineligible for any smaller prizes. This way more people have a chance to win! smile
   
6. The top three prizes will only be given out if there are more than 25 entries. Also, each sub-catagory must have at least 4 entries for a prize to be given. This is to prevent what happened in my last contest where prizes were won by default because there were so few entries. This rule may be waived at the end of the contest at my discretion or, if a category is not awarded, any gold/prizes may be awarded as a new catagory, honorable mentions, or a tie for a different catagory.
   
7. Entries should be within Gaia's ToS. If you have an idea for a tastefully nude shot or an especially bloody or violent scene, please get it approved by me before beginning the art and e-mail me the finished product instead of posting it here. Absolutely no porn/hentai/etc!
   
8. Artistic license is encouraged, to a point. This means that you are more than welcome to tweak outfits, hair styles, etc etc SO LONG AS I can tell it's my character at the end of the day. Don't feel like you have to draw Jalil in her white robe and catsuit, or that Isyndiir's armor has to be exactly as pictured or described. DO change things up (it makes for a better picture, really), just keep it with the character's style.
   
9. Don't hesistate to ask questions. This could almost be the golden rule because it's definitely important. If you have any questions about a character, don't hesitate to ask at all! People asking me questions about my characters is another tool I use to develop them and it often lets me think about them from a different point of view, so I don't mind it at all. Do ask them in the thread where possible though. That way if someone else has the same question they'll have the answer. smile

FAQ

1. What types of art do you accept?
   Mainly any type of drawing be it digital or traditional, color or black and white. Dolls/avatar edits, photomanipulations, and stories will also be accepted, but will only be eligible for prizes within their sub-catagories, if any.
   
2. Can I draw so-and-so from your last contest?
   Not for this contest, no. I'm only focusing on these four characters this time.
   
3. Can I draw your characters with mine?
   Sorry, but no. The only other characters I would allow aside from these four is any 'character of interest' listed under the Pose/Scene suggestions section for each character.
   
4. What's a character of interest?
   Another character (either mine or a friend's) that character has, would, or will interact with. For example, Jalil's husband Tyffron or her daughter Lyn'tora would both be considered 'characters of interest' for Jalil and could be drawn with her so long as Jalil was the main focus of the picture.
   
5. Can my character be one of those?
   Unless you've roleplayed with my characters before, no. Sorry.
   
6. Will you hold any of your monthly mini contests this time?
   Maybe, just depends on what kind of interest there is.
   
7. Do you mind if I bump your thread?
   Not at all, please do! The only thing I ask is that you not bump it so much that I can't find anyone else's posts please.
   
8. Mind if I use your thread to chat?

For the best picture of my hellish ISRP character, Isyndiir. I will be looking for the picture that best shows her as a confident, strong-minded warrioress with steely resolve. In other words, I want to look at her and be able to say "I sure wouldn't want to cross her in a fight!" Pictures of her in battle or leading her strike force are dearly beloved for this catagory! For the best picture of my Wheel of Time spin-off character and the OC my gaia name is based off of, Jalil. I will be specifically looking for the picture that best captures her sensual, exotic Domani aire without neccessarily resorting to leaving her half-clothed or naked. Domani women have a certain way about them to where they can light a fire in a man's heart with a simple touch, smile, or gesture, and that's the feeling I'm looking to have conveyed in this picture of Jalil. As always, I'll be glad to elaborate if there are any questions.

Awww, You're Such A Doll!

The place to be for anyone who uses doll bases or does avatar edits. Just remember to give proper credit for your bases! Please note, this catagory does NOT include going to a dollz site and making a doll from a pre-made selection. It only applies to taking an existing doll base, such as a gaia avatar or a Silindor base, and editing it using your own imagination and skills. If I find you have used a pre-made doll maker for your entry you will be disqualified! Throwing a cookie cutter doll together off a dollz site is not creating art. You must actually edit the base yourself. If you are in doubt as to whether your doll qualifies, PLEASE ASK FIRST! I would rather you ask before you do something than to do it only to find out your picture doesn't qualify, savvy?

Sometimes careful wasn't enough. That was the thought that ran through Lilith's head as she watched the three goons approaching from the corner of her eye. Never a dull moment, not in her life. She heard one of them start into a tirade about her having something that belonged to them, but she decided not to listen, instead glazing her surroundings before shouting. "Whoa, behind you!" It was enough as for a split second all three turned and looked in unison, eclipsing her movements. "Idiots," she murmured after grabbing up a nearby glass bottle and cracking the first sod over the head with more strength than seemed possible. There was a feral gleam in her eyes as the first thug dropped and she eyed the other two. She would be hungry after this...

Sadye Ayende

With her hands shoved into her pockets, she mulled about the Bazaar. There was always a crowd in the bazaar no matter what time of day it was. Carefully she observed the crowd. The Clueless were always easy to pick out, after all. The poor berks had that wonderfully cagestruck look on their face as they gawked at the wonders of Sigil. Seemed like there were alot of bloods around today, but not a lemon in sight, until she saw him through the crowds. A young boy, who couldn't have been far into adulthood, who kept mouthing 'Wow' over and over.

She could smell the jink already...

Grinning amicably she strode over. "Lady's grace, cutter."

The boy blinked out of his awed state and looked at her, blinking in astonishment. "Uh...oh...hello," he finally managed.

She smiled. "Don' fret. Th' Cage can be intimidatin' at first, but tha's what I'm here for. If you've got jink, then I've got the answers to all yer questions 'bout the Little Ring."

The boy arched a brow. "Wait a second, who are you and why should I trust you to begin with?"

"Sadye's th' name," she replied, "and trust me, 'less yer wantin' to end up in the dead-book, or worse, then the next twelve stingers you fork out'll be the best spent jink of yer life. Sigil ain't some walk in sixes, an' without someone who knows th' dark o' things, you'll be bobbed, peeled, an' countin' worms quicker than ya can blink."

She waited as he glanced around the crowded marketplace, the bazaar absolutely teeming with everything from celestials with their heavenly auras to fiends who eyed the crowd like a prize waiting to be claimed. Then, after a short moment, the boy removed a small sack from his trouser pockets and passed over two gleaming pieces of gold to the tiefling at his side. "Better safe then sorry," he muttered, then said, "That enough?"

"Yah, that's perfect," Sadye replied with a grin, taking the young man by the shoulders to lead the way. "Welcome to the City o' Doors, cutter. Stick with me and you'll get along juuuust fine."

• Name: Sadye Ayende
  
• Age: 64, but as she is part demon her aging is slow, so she's still in her adult prime (aka mid 20's)
  
• Race: Tanar'ling (a humanoid who can trace their heritage back to a demon, aka a tiefling or planetouched) with at least some dretch blood in her bloodline
  
• Homeplane: The Outlands, specifically Sigil, City of Doors
  
• Eye type/color: Completely yellow (whites and all) with the iris and pupil almost indistinguishable from the rest (you have to be extremely close to see her pupil and iris)
  
• Skin color: A smooth, pale chalky gray
  
• Body build: Slender and frail build, but has hips that are slightly wide for her body and sway naturally when she walks
  
• Hair color/length/style: Sadye's hair is mid-length stopping around or above her shoulders with long bangs framing her face
  
• Unusual Features: * Horns: Spiral horns as a Kudu

  * Eyes: Golden-yellow from edge to edge, no iris
  * Ears: Long horizontally pointed ears (like goat ears, but long and tapered like an elf's ears)
  * Mouth: All teeth pointed
  * Face: Very long eyelashes, small insignificant nose practically just two slits in her face
  -Facial look based off of the Ferai from Squaresoft's game Primal except her skin is smooth and chalky gray, she doesn't have those spiky protrusions on her cheeks, and her ears and horns are different as noted above and below.
  * Hands: Unusually colored fingernails of a dark, stormy gray; only four fingers on each hand (three and an opposable thumb), each finger slightly elongated and clawed
  * Other: Low body temperature, hates heat; sweet odor that can be so overwhelmingly sweet at first that it's sickly sweet.
  
• Tattoos/Markings: She has a tribal rose and rosevine curled around a dagger tattooed on her left shoulder
  
• Clothing: A straight necked top in stormy gray-black trimmed in lace around the top edge and from the wrists, and simple coal-colored leather breeches that have decorative belts up the side from knee to ankle where they lay over like-made boots
  
• Armor: Light leather if any
  
• Weapons: Sadye weilds a longsword of cold iron with the crossguard forged into a goat-like face with the long spiraling horns and long sideways ears (much like her own face)and carries a silvered dagger as a back-up
  
• Jewelry: Sadye wears a pendant of a dagger with a rose and rosevine curled about it
  
• Missing (or extra) appendages: She has a prehensile tail with a pointed fluke-tipped end as well as a pair of vestigial (i.e. not fully formed, they almost appear as chibi wings compared to her and she can't use them) bat-like wings of a dark, stormy gray colour.
  
• Character Personality: Non-judgemental (the type that can get along with anybody they want to), sly/crafty, street-wise
  
• Class: Urban Ranger (somewhat rogueish in nature, but knows the ins and outs of the city like a wilderness ranger knows the woodlands)
  
• Backstory/Other: Picture by Bhryn (http://bhryn.deviantart.com). Note on the reference picture. Sadye only has four fingers on each hand (three and an opposable thumb). She also has those small vestigial bat wings on her back. Aside from those two major points, this picture is accurate. If you are uncomfortable drawing a four-fingered hand then you can draw a regular hand as Sadye knows a few very minor illusory tricks to change small facets of her appearance when neccessary.

Sadye is very casual in most things she does, but always with an underlying hint of caution as well, which comes from the years of living in Sigil, a place where anything can show up at any time from celestials to demons and everything in between.

Isyndiir the Destroyer

She paced back and forth between the canvas walls of her tent. How had it all gone wrong? She had fought where they told her to fight and led her troops with a skill unknown to any other erinyes. True, no other erinyes was quite like Isyndiir. While her sisters' could seduce a mortal man out of house, home, and soul before he knew what hit him, Isyndiir had chosen the warrior's path to lead the glorious armies of Baator in the Blood War against the pathetic and unorganized hordes of demons from the Abyss. In that area she clearly eclipsed her sisters, and it was a well known, if unliked, fact. Baator wasn't so open to being different as she might have liked. She'd had worked ten times as hard to gain every step of ground she had gained in her arduous climb to the rank of general. And yet, she had done it. She had shown them her mind for tactics and warfare, led countless successful strikes, and the Hells alone knew how many times her leadership had driven back the endless Horde. Of course she had her moments of weakness, but no sane baatezu dwelled on those except to learn how to prevent them from happening again. She should have claimed her seat on the Dark Eight's war council long ago, and yet she was remanded to an 'elite strike force'. They pretended to do her an honor, but she knew in truth that the archfiends weren't prepared to face the rammifications of a mere erinyes being good enough to lead their best.

What seemed like a moment later the flap of her tent was pushed to the side and a lanky devil with a hideous beard stepped inside. "General, we've found the encampment you were looking for. Your orders?"

Suddenly she could practically taste her next step up the ladder.

• Name: Isyndiir the Destroyer
  
• Age: 1278, however being an erinyes (a type of devil) she doesn't look anywhere near her age and instead appears as a mature adult (say late 20's early 30's-ish)
  
• Race: Erinyes
  
• Eye color: Red with a sinister cast to them
  
• Skin color: Coppery-bronze
  
• Body build: Not overly muscled, but definitely she has the athletic build of a soldier.
  
• Hair color/length/style: Isyndiir has long, straight hair of a red-tinted chestnut color (a sort of reddish brown)
  
• Tattoos/Markings: Isyndiir bears several scars on her body. Sometimes it never seems that a scar will stay in one place (this is because anytime she is injured bad enough to have to be healed by a cleric, the scarring is healed as well...of course since Isyndiir is almost constantly in one battle or another, the scars never stay completely gone because she picks up new ones to replace the ones that were healed.)
  
• Clothing: The only true piece of clothing she wears is the cloth hanging down from her belt bearing her insignia. The rest is armor.
  
• Armor: Hardened leather bustier over a chainmail shirt, the sleeves tucked into heavy, spiked gauntlets at the forearms. Over her legs she wears leather breeches that have been magically enhanced to provide protection and metal leg armor over the breeches. War is Isyndiir's life, whether she's surrounded by maps and figures planning her next tactical move, discussion the next strike with her troops, in the midst of a bloody battle, or surveying the scene after victory. Any of those scenes would be highly appropriate for her. Note that her battles take place in the Nine Hells and the Infinite Abyss, both of which are not going to be sunny, happy places. So how can you help? Well that's easy!

All good actors need costumes, props, and make-up to make a movie! That's where you come in. To put it simply, your job is to design the costumes and make-up our actors for the movie. Keep reading and I'll tell you more, but watch out for the fake blood! eek

Return of the Mini Contest!
Production Starts: Today! Sept. 20th 2007
Filming Date (aka the DEADline): Halloween, October 31st 2007; The producer wants all costumes and make-up ready for filming by 11:59p EST sharp!
Plot/Theme: Our characters have been dropped in the middle of the filming for a B-rated horror movie gone wrong. Donning Halloween costumes to blend in, they must survive this oddly realistic horror movie to its grisly end! Can they make it out alive? Or will they fall prey to the monstrosities spawned from the producer's imagination? Tune in to find out!

Our Heroes

Sadye Ayende - Tanar'ling and Urban Guide to the wonders of Sigil, Sadye stepped through the wrong portal once again and ended up right in the middle of the costume party scene. She thought at first she wouldn't need a costume - until the zombies attacked and she was mistaken for one! Now disguised, she wades through the monsters with her trusty sword and dagger, intent on cutting a path back home through whatever gets in her way.
Suggested Costumes - Ninja, priestess, shaman





Dragona Nightsky - Collector of Wealth and dragon in disguise, Draggy loves to portal hop from time to time when she's not at home taking care of her four wyrmlings. One such portal hop brought her to this strange, morbid seeming land. Seeing everyone seemed to be going to a costume party of some sort, Draggy's curiosity got the best of her. She hunted down a costume and went to join...and then all hell broke loose.
Suggested Costumes - Pirate, vampire, anything that doesn't require wearing a dress!




Kessey (mouselet) - She'd been world-hopping for years now, and well, some worlds were better than others. Though the costume party she'd ended up in had given Kessey a start at first--she hadn't realized they were costumes. She spared a moment to thank the gods that they took her outfit for a costume.

Then things started going wrong. Kessey drew her sword in one smooth motion and took up a defensive stance. She wouldn't kill anyone--unless if they tried to kill her

The Villians and Monsters!

Sovix - While at first appearance Sovix may look like a simple drow, it's all a deception - one you usually won't see until you're snared deep in his web! Sovix is, in fact, a drider - a tauric abomination of a drow torso crossed with a monstrous spider's abdomen. Beware that alluring smile for it's only meant to draw you in for the biting...

Nox - A terrifying 11 ft. tall half-dragon, Nox has come to fully enjoy the fear and terror she inspires in the puny soft skins of this plane. She marches the night like a reptilian demon waiting to drag her next victim to the depths of hell and back.




The Mastermind - A woman of hidden strength and potential, her true identity has yet to be revealed in the movie. She is described as a draconic woman whose shadow is the massive form of a roaring dragon that eats its victims with horrific glee. What secrets does this dark dragon hold? Who is she and why has she brought such terror on the movie set?

The Minions

Hordes of zombies, a coven of vampires, witches, werewolves, even Frankenstein or Freddy! Any horror movie monster can be drawn so long as they're with one of the characters. And you get to decide whether they're working with the heroes or the villians. wink

This was truely my favorite entry that I recieved. I absolutely LOVE the way you portrayed Sadye. It's practically perfect in every way from the belted boots to the vestigial wings to the sardonic cager's smile. THAT is the Sadye that greets the clueless in the Cage. I say this with all sincerity and honesty. I have gotten some extremely good portrayals of Sadye, but this one is absolutely the best overall portrayal I've received simply because it is a picture worth 1000 words. Congratulations Spatter, you earned it!

So here's the rub. Picking out my top three was fairly easy. I knew which three pictures really caught my eye when they were entered. And I knew which picture of those three had been my absolute favorite. Deciding between the other two, though, I found to be impossible. I knew I could ask a friend, or sit here and debate with myself all day, or even random number it if I had to! The fact was, though, that I loved BOTH of these pictures equally, if for different reasons. There was no clear choice. Chim: You may not have liked the 'butt face demon' as you called it wink , but the way you portrayed Isy here was excellent! I love the armor design especially, and the whole piece could've been drawn for a professional comic, which I adore! Plus she has enough poise and dignity in that picture to de-throne a king, and yet her expression is that of a hardened warrior as well as a devil who enjoys wading in the blood of the battlefield.
