Nope, but that does sound like a better idea. I've used silly things like 'chicken', and names of characters to change my focus. I like the hand grabbing idea too; I sometimes just sink my nails into my thigh to help.

I don't know if salt water would be better actually, but any water helps. I was so pissed when our government retired the water bombers; I was house sitting at a lake awhile back where I could see the aircraft just sitting in the water, and a huge forest fire was burning nearby. After the outrage from residents, the government brought them back, but still late. Yeah, I tried to stay indoors when the smoke was bad, and wore a face mask or scarf when going outside.

I'm fine with bright shiny things normally, but when I'm reading/watching something and there's objects that distracts my attention, say a red coat in the corner, or silver wrapper etc, I need to remove it right away. Which I don't think is that abnormal, and most days it isn't even a problem. I do have ways to snap myself out; I focus on a word or phrase to disrupt what I'm doing, or firmly give myself orders on what to do next, like 'leave the room now', and that helps.

I'm glad you weren't hurt more, that could have gone so wrong. Yeah, being on an island and close to water definitely helps, although it would still be dangerous if our trees caught fire from heat or human error. I can't remember, but I don't think the smoke lasted that long here, maybe a week I guess.

that hurricane sounded really frightening, especially after Katrina. i hope you were able to muddle through it alright. my sister and her family are in Florida too and it was a few days before we heard anything from them. cat_confused

but no thankfully it doesn't involve either of those things. for once the fires happened not in my area. unfortunately they happened very, very close to where my grandparents and best friends live. three times.

My parents were cautious but not stiflingly so; if I really wanted to do something they would have let me, and they did encourage me to try new things. I know I could do those things now, but I just don't feel a strong desire to actively look into those activities, although I would if a friend invited me to come with them. I can be a bit OCD at times, but not as bad as when I was a teenager, and not noticeable enough to catch anyone's attention. But when I'm feeling anxious I start doing things like repeatedly adjusting item placements, making sure bright coloured items aren't in my field of view if focussing on something, that sort of thing. It gets worse if my blood sugar drops low, my thoughts sometimes get stuck in repetition before I realize what's happening. Ah sorry, didn't mean to talk about myself for so long!

Oh wow, that's scary to imagine! Did you get hurt at all?
Everything was safe here, the fires were mostly on the mainland and far from me, but the sky did stay dark and sepia coloured for a couple days, and you could smell the smoke.

I don't know, I'm overly cautious and a lot of things make me nervous. My mom is like that too, so I was a bit overprotected growing up. I had the chance to ride a helicopter when I was a kid, and I broke down crying at the idea. Same with riding a horse, lol. I would do both of those things now if given the chance, but I'm still wary of going out of my comfort zone.

That sounds horrible; I chatted with a friend from Florida who was dealing with that too, and she ended up getting heat sick. We had a bunch of forest fires here in BC at the time, but the weather was no where near as dangerous. I'm sure everyone appreciated the help you gave!

Aw geez, I'm so glad you're okay! It was horrible seeing the hurricane destruction on the news, I'm sorry to hear you had to go through all that!

Nothing overly exciting I think, although two of my cousins had babies so that was nice. I don't know, 2017 seemed to move fast for me. How was the past year for you?

I'm always a city girl, so I probably stick to the city while seeing the sights from the train.
But now my friend wants to go visit Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, and New York. Shes more impromptu than me also, while im all about having detailed plans. So might be doing that during this summer also!
