I pulled a piece of dog fur
From my lip the other day.
And looking at it then
I didn't know what to say.
I'm not use to being
in an empty house
or having no one home
when I'm by myself.
I miss that stupid dog smell
Of sand and dirt and sea
The chill of the wind blown
as I'm being pulled along
I miss the excited skitter
after asking for a walk.
I miss the dirt stain on the wall
And the romping down the hall.
The clucking rabbit
and squeaking duck
Most of all
I miss my dirty mutt.
The creaking of the dog door
As we took it in and out.
And the wind slapping
Through the dog door flapping
Tickling my hair.
But now
I'm not tripping over
Food bowls on the floor.
Or accidentally stepping
In a water dish.
There's no more wind blowing
through the dog door gap
No need for the dog door anymore.
A poem's hard to write you see
When you say good bye
to the one that loved you most
Yes I'm sad
for the lack of fur,
the faded stain
and no more clicking claws
But she lives on in my heart.
