Top 10 Best Video Game Endings
Picking top 10 best endings was difficult. Not because there are so many to choose from, but because there aren't enough. The vast majority of games have only okay endings, and I can understand why. People want to spend their time making a good game, and usually leave the ending for last. Plus, they figure that if someone finishes their game, then it's most likely already purchased, so they don't NEED to have a good ending. Still, it's a bit of a let down when a teriffic game has an ending that's 'only okay' or even plain bland. This includes Dragon Age Origins, Fallout 3, and of course, Assassin's Creed. But there are so many others, so it's really refreshing when a game puts as much effort (if not more) into its ending as it does into its actual journey. And these games are...

10. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda doesn't really boast an incredibly impressive, and deep narrative. Its storylines are simple as was the case with Ocarina of Time. But by the end of it, the journey was so grand and memorable. And what this ending does is bring all the characters from the game together, and essentially reflects on the entire journey, and really gives you that, "It's finally over," feeling that makes you say, "But I don't want it to be over. I wanna keep going!" And that's the beauty of this particular ending.

9. Alan Wake
Alan Wake had a huge impact on me, and its ending contributed to a lot of it. It wasn't a happy ending, it wasn't a tragic ending, it was somewhere in between, and that's what I like about it. It doesn't have closure, but at the same time, it leaves a glimmer of hope. I'm pretty sure there will be a sequel, and I cannot wait for it.

8. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Resident Evil 3's ending really pays off if you've played the first two beforehand, so perhaps it's not universally great. But it is one of my favorites. Why? Because it's one of the most monumental and biggest things that happened in the Resident Evil history. Like many Horror franchises, Resident Evil started out in a fictitious town, and that town became truly iconic after the first two games. And when it got obliterated in Resident Evil 3, it was like obliterating a part of the franchise itself. And it was true, in a sense, since the franchise pretty much went downhill after that. Raccoon City, you are missed.

7. Silent Hill 2
Okay, so Silent Hill 2's ending(s) didn't really take a LOT of effort, but this is where good writing pays off. In spite of being relatively short and simple, most of its endings have a massive impact if you've really immersed yourself into the experience and connected with the character (which isn't difficult to do in this case). In addition, the endings include a long letter being narrated by one of the characters, and as lengthy and 'unexciting' as this part is, I can never bring myself to skip it, because it's a truly touching and emotionally heavy scene. Which made this ending so incredibly memorable.

6. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Not many franchises have true endings. Usually they either lose popularity and fade into obscurity, like Dino Crisis and Double Dragon, or they go on forever until they become stale and uninteresting, like Final Fantasy and Resident Evil. And while I'm sure that Konami is far from being done with the Metal Gear franchise, Metal Gear Solid 4 still brought us a Solid conclusion (hur hur). So for anyone who chooses to stop playing Metal Gear games after Metal Gear Solid 4, they will not have any unanswered questions. Some of the decisions they made in MGS4's ending are questionable, but that doesn't change the fact that it was one long and legendary ending.

5. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Shattered Memories had a twist ending, and while there are people out there who are good at figuring out twists and ruining games and movies for themselves, I don't do that. But I was actually surprised how many other people didn't see this ending coming. It really does sneak up on you, and then you go, "Oh my god, I didn't see that coming at all!" In addition to that, this ending has one of the best video game monologues I've ever heard, in terms of writing and voice acting. Afterwards, the results of the ending vary, but the fact that they cater to how you play the game, and the decisions you make is also very awesome.

4. Metal Gear Solid/Twin Snakes
Metal Gear Solid set new standards in storytelling in the PS1 generation. And while some people b***h and moan about how cinematics are too long, I b***h and moan that there aren't more games out there doing this. I remember the first time I beat Metal Gear Solid. I was going back and forth between playing the game, and talking to someone on the internet, and I said, "brb, I just gotta finish this game," and half an hour later, I return. I did not realize how long this ending was going to be, but when I started watching it, I could not pry myself away. It was a great way to end a great game.

3. Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick
Evil Dead: Regeneration was the last Evil Dead game made, and it was also the best one. Everything about it was better than its predecessors. Everything except the ending. A Fistful of Boomstick had one of the best, most hilarious and badass endings I've ever seen in a game. It's the kind of ending that makes you wish this game had a true sequel. A Fistful of Boomstick is not a very fun game, it had a cool storyline, but other than that, it was kind of a grind. But that ending was a wonderful reward.

2. Resident Evil 2
A lot of people will tell you that Resident Evil 2 is the best Resident Evil game in the franchise, and I can't help but think that a part of that is because of its ending. First of all, by the time you finish Scenario B, you're thinking, "Oh, I get it, the ending is just liek in Scenario A. That's still pretty intense," but then it throws you a curveball, and something new happens, and you got another boss fight on your hands. And even after you do finish that, the ending you're given is relatively long, and absolutely intense. That's an ending that definitely took some real effort.

1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Kojima knows how to design memorable boss fights, and he knows how to design memorable endings. And Snake Eater easily had my favorite ending out of any video game. Giving you plot twists all the way until the end. This is easily one of the most emotionally powerful endings in video game history. But it's also a beginning. The beginning of Big Boss. And knowing who he becomes later on in the franchise, it only adds another layer of sadness. Great writing, mixed with great visuals and powerful music. This is how endings should be.
