Really sad. I haven't been updating this thing like I promised I would. :'-(.
Anyway, I'm Lauren T. and I'm the chapter president of my STAND group here in Juneau, AK! I'm so proud. We started up in what, September of the 07-08 year? That sounds right. It's kinda whacky, since we're a 'student group' at the highschool. It means that from year to year we most likely won't be having the same members from the previous year(s), due to graduation and such. It's sad, but copable. But right now I'm in the predicament of planning a couple summer events for my chapter.
It's weird! As far as I know, most of my chapter buddies are out of town or otherwise unavailable. So I'm kinda at a roadblock with my planning, but I've got a couple ideas.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Idea one (tell me what you think, I don't mind): "Dinner for Darfur" I've been to the Pillars of America: Freedom Series luncheons that our local Rotary Club puts on every year, and I really like the idea. You pay a ticket price to get in, and you're served a meal and dessert over a couple hours or so while hearing your key-note speaker talk about why they're there. I really liked the one with the astronaut. It really moved me, how he was talking about being in space and the overwhelming simplicity of his views of Earth from the shuttle. Whenever I think about the pictures he'd put into his slideshow it just renews my belief in all people being one people, and trying to have peace between us all. I really want to keep that experience in my heart and mind as I try planning this.
So far I've got these possibilities: *Alaska Youth Choir to do our music, or part of it. I was in this for a few years, and I found that we'd do a lot of spiritual pieces and ones about peace amongst mankind. The music director, Ms. Smythe, has offered to perform for me in a large event. I assume I'd be giving her a cut of the proceeds, but I remember what it's like trying to pay for tuition for that choir. I'm not saying it's crap, but it was expensive, especially for those who travel during the summer with the choir. It'd be a way to help finance those kids, and as an alumnist, I know the kids would greatly appreciate it. --song list: Hope For Resolution a couple more that slip my mind Maybe a choral rendition of "Land of Confusion"?
*Catering: Abby's Kitchen. My aunt recommended them to me when I mentioned my ideas. I've never used her services but I'm sure that it'll be okay....
*Place: Well, here's my predicament. I want to have this at the Centennial Hall, with it's well known and easily accessible central location, but I know it'll be difficult to swing. Gah!!!
*Funding: I'm hoping I can get funding in part with a couple grants, maybe a donation from the Rotary Club...I'm not sure! I need help! I';m thinking of maybe asking the banks and other local businesses for donations and such, you know, have them buy ads in a pamphlet or something. I know three attorneys that'd do it, possibly one P.I...
Yeah... So that's idea one.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Idea two: Rock out Genocide
I know a couple local bands and dj's who'd be cool enough to help me out with this. The idea is to have a concert type-y thingy and get lots of media for this event, as a visual--and audible-- showing of support of anti-genocidal workings.
Possible band peeps:
---Missed by a Long Shot---local guys at the highschool who might be persuaded ---Dan--my aunt's dj friend ---The Bastards--I'm not sure what they'd do... but they're my mom and dad's friends... ---other peoples....i'm not sure who though....
Financing: it'd be pretty little cost, I suspect, as most of my band buds have their own equipment and such. Again, if I really need it I could resort to financial aid by local businesses...(refer to financial idea one)...
Place: Again, the SNAFU of where to hold this... I really like Centennial Hall! It's big! But Marlintini's would be a good spot to hold it too... The bar owners like my aunt, she worked there for-friggin-EVER.
With either of these ideas I want proceeds to go in part to whoever loans us space, food, etc. Maybe some for our performers, I'm not sure. STAND is a non-profit, and we use the money, not just sit on it or anything. I'd donate it between STAND and the Save Darfur Coalition, our parent organization.
Yeah. Any suggestions, just give them to me if you want!
Thanks!
Lauren
