The sun was out and the song birds were singing their lullabies as the day slowly moved on. It seemed as if it had turned into spring overnight. She was sitting on a log in a wooded area. There was a book in her hand, and she was reading intently. Her eyes flitting across the pages. Taking in all of the words she saw on the pages. Then, with a sigh, she closed the book suddenly. This girl dropped her bookmark on some leaves that were left over from last fall. This bookmark read her name: Anne. After brushing some of the leaves off the bookmark, she put it in her book and then she laid down on the log. Anne stared up at the sky.
Slowly, she faded into sleep. It was relaxing, and soon she was asleep. Not long after she woke up, but she wasn’t in the wooded area where she fell asleep. She was in her ‘dreamscape’. A place where everyone goes when they fall asleep, where they can create any situation or scenario they want. This was Anne’s favorite part of falling asleep. There was nothing more that she enjoyed. Her first situation was a battlefield.
This battlefield looked like it was out of the Renaissance. Anne was in armor that looked like something a hero would wear. Her armor was made of silver, it fit her down to every curve and was light enough to not impair mobility. As the battle wore on she sliced her way through enemies, trying to rescue her target. The sunlight was streaming through the clouds onto the tower where the Prince had been taken to by an Evil Queen. She smiled as she ran right through the gate bringing her soldiers with her. Her first goal was to rid the land of the evil that had been there too long.
The castle was huge, and dark. Once she approached the castle doors, she could feel the evil emanating off the walls. Her soldiers were battling enemies around her as she entered the castle. There were many halls, staircases and rooms. Anne was sure she would find the queen, her first guess would be to find the throne room.
She wandered through hall after hall. Eventually, she was standing in the ballroom and yelled out in anger. It was almost as if the castle was enchanted in some way, keeping her from finding the Queen. The ballroom was huge, and there was a grand staircase at the other end of the room. The floor was made of white polished granite. There were tapestries that covered the walls. They were telling a story of a harsh battle and the downfall of an evil ruler in the end. Windows extended from a few feet off the ground until just before the ceiling. A chandelier hung above and as tiny rays of light hit the crystals that adorned the fixture, little strips of rainbows moved across the room. Anne focused on those colorful light rays, she needed a cool head. Getting frustrated would just make her situation worse.
Suddenly, there was an evil laughter coming from the grand staircase. She looked over and saw a female silhouette at the top of the stairs. Looking closer, this woman was wearing an elegant dress with the hem laying on the ground. It pulled in at the woman’s waist and flowed out at her hips. It had elaborate embroidery on the corset, and was both black and dark gray. The gray material shimmered in the sunlight that came through the windows. Anne bent her knees and leaned forward slightly, readying herself to fight. Again, the woman laughed.
Anne assumed that this woman must’ve been the one she needed to take care of.
“I cannot believe they sent someone so weak! I can already tell you won’t put up much of a fight,” the woman jested, “Give me your best shot!”
Without a second thought, Anne charged. Trying to get a scratch on the woman, but failed. The woman, with a flick of her wrist, sent the young hero into a pillar at the other end of the ballroom. Slowly, she got back up just as the evil woman got to the bottom of the stairs. “Really? Is that the best you can do?” Anne laughed. She brushed the dust off her armor and picked her long sword back up.
The Evil Queen cackled, obviously enjoying the time she has now playing with her prey. “Oh, dear. I am just getting warmed up,” the woman laughed again. Time after time, Anne got pushed back down, or into a wall. After twenty minutes of being tossed around, she started coughing and spitting out blood. Yet, every time she was tossed, she still got up. “Why won’t you just give up?” The Queen had asked. At this point the woman clad in black was getting irritated.
“I don’t give up, I will keep getting up until I accomplish my task,” Anne stated. The pain was almost unbearable, but she ignored it. There were other things she needed to worry about, like saving the prince and achieving that goal. She got up and started moving swiftly. Dodging everything thrown at her by the Evil Queen. It was not easy, but eventually she injured the Queen. Anne had made a gash on the Queen’s arm.
The Queen cried out in agony. “You insolent little--,” But before she could continue Anne had ran her sword through the Evil woman. There was a moment of silence as the woman tried to take in this new information. She had been defeated, and didn't understand how. Previous ‘heroes’ that had come gave up, unable to bear the pain. That and the Queen became too relaxed, figuring that she was going to win. No matter the cost.
After a minute, making sure that the Queen died, Anne rushed up the stairs and taking her sword with her for good measure. It was a good thing she had because there were guards near the door to where the prince was being kept. She cut both of them down with two swift movements of her sword. After making it through a beating, that was child’s play.
The door to the tower, in which the prince was kept, was a heavy wooden door. There were iron bars that made a window on the door. When she walked in the door, she looked around the room. It was dank and smelled musty. A barred window was at the far end of the room. The floor was covered in strands of hay and there was a small cot underneath the window. In the cot there was a lump. The prince was balled up underneath a thin blanket.
Anne walked up slowly and gently laid a hand on his shoulder. She felt him shudder underneath her touch. Or was it him? Suddenly, the whole room was shaking and the prince immediately sat up in his cot. That was when Anne realized that the castle was probably made from a part of the Queens life force. Which meant that if she died, then the castle would fall apart.
“Come on! There is no time to waste!” Anne yelled at the prince and extended her hand out towards him. As soon as he grabbed her hand she started running out of the room and down the hall. The castle was crumbling in front of them as they ran to the grand staircase. Anne stopped for a second as she noticed not only was the Queen’s body gone, but the stairs were falling apart. There was a tapestry on one side of where the staircase was. Calmly, she told the prince to follow her lead. Stepping over the railing, she climbed down and grabbed on to the tapestry and slid down on it. The prince followed after.
They ran through hall after hall. Walls coming down in front of them and causing them to go a different way at times. It was dusty and hot, but after a little determination, they found the exit. The ceiling above them was threatening to fall at any moment and at the last second they threw themselves out and on to the grassy area just outside the door of the castle.
The soldiers of Anne’s militia roared in triumph when they saw that both she and the prince made it out alive. She stood up and thrust her sword into the air in excitement. Her dreamscape was coming to an end though, because she heard someone calling out her name from the other side. Before she left she saluted her military. __________
“Anne! Anne!”
The girl jolted awake and looked around. There was a little girl next to her. It was her six year old sister, Molly. Anne smiled at her and picked the little one up and hugged her. While Anne may enjoy escaping life to sleep and go to her dreamscape, there was nothing like waking up and being able to see her family. Her dreamscape would always be there when she wanted to use her personality and ideals in any given situation, but reality helped her show it to all of those around her.
The sun was up and beating down on to the Earth. The song birds sang their tunes, and Anne decided it was time to put the book down and forget about her dreams for now. They would be there when she got back, at that moment it was more important to play with her sister because she never knew when it would be her last time seeing her.

XXXXXShe walked away from the town she had lived in for all 18 years of her life. It was a town that had never treated her like a normal human. Not that she was normal, after all she was an abomination according to people who are afraid of anything different. It was tempting to look back, but she kept walking. Eventually the temptation took over her mind and she turned around. A smile spread across her face as she looked at her handiwork.
XXXXXThe town she had spent all her life, up until now, was in flames. Everyone either dead already, or dying as she was standing there. For once she was free. Nothing was tying her to this place anymore. No family or friend, not that she had any, but there were a few that were kind to her. She made sure to kill them quickly so they didn’t suffer. There was some regret to that decision, but not enough to make her look back any longer.
XXXXXOnce she looked away she never looked back. No need to dwell on the past when she has a whole eternity left to deal with.
(THIS IS NOT A FINISHED SECTION OF A STORY I AM WRITING) just an FYI
