Sat Phones For School Camps
1: Hi My name is John Whitley and I’m the founder of Satellitephonesales.com.au Australia no 1 satellite communications online store.
In these videos our objective is not to spend hours boring you with technical information but simply to give you a brief overview.
In this video I wanted to answer one of the most frequently asked questions I get from anyone looking into Satellite Phones in Australia. The question is simply “Can I use my Satellite Phone in my car of office”? read all about it here
So Lets get straight into it:
At the time of recording this the two networks that are common in Australia are Thuraya and Iridium.
At the time of watching this video the two options for Mobile Satellite Phone whilst in transit or within buildings are restricted.
First lets understand why. Satellite Communications is based around exactly that Satellites, meaning just that, it uses Satellites to receive and then distribute the call.
As such that means that the Satellite Phone must have Direct line of site to the sky. Via either the Telephones direct aerial or an extension of types.

So looking at our options, once again we look at the Thuraya Satellite Phones first.

Both Phones are usable whilst you have direct line of sight to the sky, however if that is impeded in any way, be it heavy foliage, tree cover, cliff edges or electrical issues then you may have difficulty in connecting.
At present thuraya do not offer a mobile aerial that simply attaches to the phone so as you can use the Satellite Phone in a moving vehicle, be it a car or Truck or even a train.
This simply leaves their car kit attachment which at an extra cost of on average $1600 plus installation to the phone makes this an expensive vehicle enhancement.

As of yet we have not seen an in office adapter either which would allow internal use whilst accessing the satellite network.
Hopefully demand in time will make these options available.

The Iridium 9555 however comes with a number of accessories that will allow use in moving vehicles of any type. By way of a magnetic mount antenna (which is standard and included) which simply attaches to the phone and allows you to place a small magnetic mount through your window and on to your roof. Instantly giving you mobile Satellite communications within your mode of transportation.

They also offer a car kit, a little bit cheaper than Thuraya’s at nearer $1350 which offer’s the safety of permanent installation.
We currently have Iridiums Satellite Telephones in cars, Trucks, Trains, ships, yachts and aeroplanes to name but a few.

There are a host of external aerials for all sorts of vessels with extension cables available so as to meet all requirements.

I hope this video has been helpful
