There we stood, locked in an unwavering stare. I couldn't believe I had unwittingly rescued my ex from the pack of "Biters" that had been ambling through passed the drug store while I was doing a final run. Our group was going to leave the city, and it was just about time. We were raiding every store that we could access to make sure we had a decent amount of supplies. Other people were siphoning gas from the numerous vehicles abandoned on the streets of our once thriving home town. "Keith...", I said, unable to think of anything intelligent. "Rosie..", he replied. My eyebrows knitted together at the mention of his pet name for me.
He started to say something else, but still being unsure of how I felt I couldn't allow him to continue just quite yet. "Don't worry. I won't leave you here. Follow me..I guess", I muttered. We needed to get off the street and I needed to finish gathering available supplies. Once inside the store again I hurled a woven bag at him. "Be useful. Baby formula, aspirin, rubbing alcohol, peroxide...get it?", I ordered, not really posing it as a question. He silently picked up the bag and begun to do as I told him. I wondered at how the group would feel about one more survivor to their group. I could see his storm cloud blue eyes watching me for a moment. I remembered when those eyes looked on me with true affection, or so I had thought.
Even so, the idea of letting him die caused my chest to spasm in an odd way. My throat convulsed and I shook my head. I guess if I had to, I could make our history known and then no one would expect me to leave him behind. I was done with my part of the store. Keith was waiting on the edge of the aisle was in, nervously switching his weight from foot to foot. "I have a car parked out back..let's get this stuff loaded and go. The group has already migrated to our south hiding post by the highway leading out of town. ", I explained stiffly. Once we got back there we would be making our way to the small "mountain" if it could be called that, where we had decided would be our lonely but defensible homestead.
"Time to go", I whispered when another small group of flesh eaters trudged close by the window. Side by side, Keith and I snuck over the counters and through the back door, where my vehicle was waiting patiently. I was still agitated though, so I tried my best not to let any part of my body touch him as we took the short drive to the south post. I still couldn't tell if I was relieved or not.
