I walk alone in a desert of sin and steel, only the souls of the dead walk with me. The skeletons of ancient and monolithic buildings watch me as I pass through the hellish landscape. This is a place damned in an era long forgotten, damned by pride and ignorance, forgotten by the survivors of it's fall. I hear the dead cry out to me, they scream in agony as the demons of hell tear at their souls. I ignore them however, they deserve the pain for their sinful arrogance, besides there are far realer demons to contend with in this desert.

I hear movement in the rubble, and my muscles tense. I haven't seen any of the steel demons in weeks, I had thought these ruins free from them. I felt the cold steel of my sword at my side, my mind purged of all thoughts except those about my immediate situation. The rubble moved freeing their inhabitant. Instead of a demon only a large dog removed itself from the broken concrete.

I could not relax however, these wild creatures are dangerous in their own right. Once perhaps this monsters ancestors were loyal companions of men, now however I was only a potential meal. I looked the dog in the eyes, in this gaze I let the dog know that I was not prey, but a predator and that I would not fall should a battle ensue. The dog growled, and I returned the growl in kind. The creature finally decided that I was not worth the effort, and there were easier meals.

It was strange however to see this creature alone, wild dogs such as that usually traveled in packs. However maybe it was a bit like myself, needing no other companionship other than ones instincts and the desert.
