He was a spoiled little brat who did nothing to oppose any wrongdoers around him. He lived obliviously. He lived a life of luxury and ignored the problems around him. So it is fitting that he suffers the same fate of those who he mingled with.
While I have to admit Gino does have some ownership in all of this, don't forget that it's indirect. Evil triumphs when good people do nothing, as the saying goes, but that doesn't make them equal to the evil people and the extenuating circumstances have to be considered.
Gino wasn't in a good position to defy his father, nor did he even have the spirit too. He wasn't a spoiled brat in the least, and was actually frequently mistreated. Sure Gambino threw him some nice parties, but those were probably as much because Gambino loves parties than as for Gino's sake (in fact, seeing as Gino's so shy, he probably didn't enjoy them.)
Gambino seemed to be despise Gino back during the Olympics and Halloween. I doubt he was rewarding him for being a failure. Given how he so cooly eliminated anyone who got in his way, Gino might have been afraid of terrible reprecussions if he did speak out. I'm sure he fretted and was miserable about the whole situation. He must have felt powerless.
Not everyone can be a hero, but that doesn't make them a villain.
