I recieved a phone call, today, from my old liaison at IMP. He tried to conduct small talk, asking me how life was; how things were going with my girlfriend. There was an awkwardness in how he was asking these questions, as if he was leading me somewhere with it all.
"Have you heard anything on the news about NASA?"
It was a strange question. I do not own a TV, and the radio had mentioned nothing. I asked him if it was something on the internet. Being as old fashioned as I am, I would have never heard about it, if that was the case.
Then he asked me another peculiar question: Did I have any strange dreams, lately? I answered with no and inquired into his curiosity and its relation to this news from NASA.
According to him, one of their telescopes is picking up a new star very close--relatively speaking--to Earth. A bright red star, which seemed to appear as if from nowhere. He told me it matches the description of a astronomers reported seeing 100 years ago. Around that same time, a doctor in France witnessed and experienced a number of strange phenomena--strange dreams were one of the 'symptoms,' the doctor described.
Normally, when I hear stories as crazy as this, I look into other possibilities, but this is coming right out of the International Magi Police, and my experiences with them are that they are generally good at sniffing out a supernatural threat.
But I have no idea why I was called. When I asked if they wanted me to look into this, he told me to stay put and focus on my other cases--which aside from my pet project, I have none.
Spotter was never good at hiding things. He did not want me to know something. The last time he acted like this, he was keeping the fact that the leader of the now defunct Cross Branch, a division of IMP devoted to the extermination of supernatural creatures, was a lich masquerading about with my older brother's face.
Just thinking about that man makes my skin crawl, even after 6 years. I still have no idea what his motives were, or even what he was; his body turned out to not even be Theodore's. But as I am finding out with this small project of mine, perhaps some mysteries are better left at that: unknown.
