You must plan ahead if you are going to fly. Many of the major airports are situated in and around big cities, so you need to plan ahead to avoid any delays, especially during heavily congested periods like rush hour. Have your bags packed well in advance. Complete and execute all of your plans well in advance of your flight. One of the worst ways to start a trip is to miss your flight.



Consider mailing souvenirs home. Everyone loves souvenirs, but sometimes you can wind up with one too many while traveling. If all the things you have accumulated on your vacation won't fit in your suitcase for the return trip, you can always mail them home. Usually, you will make it home before your trinkets do.



Asking for a better hotel room when you are checking in will most probably get you one! If you would prefer a better view, a quieter room or maybe one closer to the ice-machine, chances are very good that one is available. It takes but a moment to ask and will most definitely improve your stay.



Tip your concierge! Whether it be on a cruise or at a hotel, your concierge will be your go-to guy for reservations, directions and almost everything else! Many concierges have admitted that if someone is willing to tip them well, they will go out of their way to make sure those great tippers, have a fantastic time.



Check the services that are available, beforehand. Many small airports offer charter airlines; they may not show up as you search for rates, and sometimes can offer a better deal than major airlines.

Traveling with groups can be frustrating to say the least. Who wants to miss their flight because one or more member of the group can't be located. One solution is to make everyone wear the same color of brightly colored t-shirts or maybe even visors that can be take off once you are in the air.



If you're going to be driving to your destination, especially if it's a long trip, try to travel at night. There's a lot less traffic on the roads so you can most likely get their faster. And if you're traveling with kids, they can curl up in the back seat and sleep the drive away.



A lot of hotels offer discounted rates to locals, especially during the off-season. If you're going somewhere where you have family or friends, you should have them ask about a local discount. If there is one, you can have them book the hotel for you and save yourself some money!



You never know what may arise when traveling to another country so take the time to find out the location of your country's embassy or foreign office. If passport issues arise or any other situation that may affect you as a foreign visitor to the country, your embassy can be the best place to resolve them.



If you are traveling on an extended vacation, plan on doing laundry as you go. You should not attempt to carry more than a week's worth of clothing with you at any one time. More than that will become too bulky to easily transport from place to place; doing laundry in the sink is easier.



Avoid getting lost in a new city and country by going to one very important spot when you land. That spot would be the tourism bureau. This place is packed with helpful people, guides, maps, all kinds of money-saving deals, and find out about free events that you can attend.



When you're packing your luggage, put anything you might need before you get to your destination, on top. This will help keep you from digging through your entire suitcase to find a hair brush or a book. Not only can it save you some time and frustration, but you won't have to worry about things falling out while you're looking and end up getting lost.
