"Normally, when we arrive on scene, we see family members who
have had to flee from their home with nothing. They are standing outside
in pajamas," Ms. Valentine said. "It's a devastating time
for parents, but for children their lives have been turned upside down.

According to the American Red Cross, two fires displaced four
families earlier this week. Since July 1, 30 fires in Worcester
displaced 149 children; a total of 351 children were displaced in
Worcester last year.
"There are numerous incidents when I've been on calls
where children are emotionally distraught," Chief DiLiddo said.
"What this is all about is some sign of comfort for the child. Even
if it's short term, it distracts a child for a moment that, I
wanted to start a program which would allow officers to have something
to give to a hurting child."
Nicole Valentine, director of emergency services for the American
Red Cross of Central Massachusetts, is familiar with Ms. Pisacane and
Project Smile and said they do great work.

"A stuffed animal may be small, but its significance is
huge," said Ms. Pisacane. "Police and fire departments are the
ones who are at the car accidents, see the sick and injured and the
times when a child is hurt or upset. So this hopefully helps."
