A contraction of informatiemathematica ("information mathematics" wink , possibly via the cognate French informatique, also mdm master data management hub architecture cognate with Italian informatica, English informatics, German Informatika etc.

Big data refers to a process that is used when traditional data mining and handling techniques cannot uncover the insights and meaning of the underlying data.
