A compost pile is central to the component of every garden. It works as mulch, fertilizer plus a soil conditioner all rolled into one. Compost keeps your plants healthy by feeding the soil microorganisms which break the organic matter into humus. Additionally, as it allows sandy soil to retain more water, it can also help clay soil to drain better. Not to mention the truth that composting reduces your waste contribution by recycling kitchen and yard waste, and also allowing for less overall water usage. So there are plenty of benefits, so how do we start?
Choose what is composting or Site
You don't necessarily require a bin for composting grass clippings, leaves and other yard waste. However, if you are adding food scraps on the mix then the composting bin is important. A bin will keep the compost area contained, and will help prevent pets along with other animals from mucking around in your pile.
You can buy a compost bin ready-made, or you can build one yourself using recycled pallets or slatted wood. If you decide to go the DIY route you'll want to make sure you leave the whites open. This will offer you easy access when you really need to add more ingredients or tend towards the pile. It's a good idea to disguise your access hole having a piece of plywood the clothes airer. It's also worth noting a three-bin method is ideal. This allows you to have compost in various stages of development constantly, namely: starting, composting, and able to spread.
Add to Your Pile
The key components in your compost process will likely be green garden debris, largely made up of grass clippings, and brown garden debris, consists of old leaves, small twigs and mulched wood. You need a nice mix of both because green debris is high in nitrogen while brown debris is high in carbon. If you add only green debris, your pile will smell horrible.
It's vital that you ensure that the one thing that enters your compost out of your kitchen is vegetable and fruit waste. You cannot add meats, dairy, oils, animal waste, seeded weeds, diseased plants or any flowers or plants which have been treated with any type of herbicide or pesticide.
Balance the mix of your pile ingredients so it contains brown debris at twice precisely green debris. This helps it to break down a lot quicker. You can further accelerate the composting process by having in some garden soil or finished compost, because this will increase the microbial activity in your pile in the early stages.
Moisture
The composting process requires moisture for the debris to break down. Ideally, your pile should feel compost mixer , but never dry or soaked. Too much moisture will lower the temperature and result in the pile to smell badly, but too little help keep the pile overheated that can slow the speed of decomposition down substantially. You should check the moisture every couple of days. As a tip, should your pile extends to wet, adding brown debris will assist to dry it out faster.
Maintenance
It is essential that you turn your compost pile once a week so material on the outside of the pile is moved inward. Turning also increases airflow which stops the pile from compacting and speeds up decomposition.
When you firstly start composting for gardening, it may need about two months for your first pile to be ready. When the pile no longer gets heated and you can't identify any original ingredients, it is ready being used. Ideally, your compost will probably be moist, dark brown and give an impression of upturned earth. Dig the finished product in to the soil with your garden; your plants will love it. Then it's time to sit back and be ok with creating a healthy garden and helping to preserve the environment.
