As summer rolls by here in http://www.sandiego.gov/ and craft that goes into the sand sculptures at this incredible event. Many steps go into each sculpture that aren't seen by spectators. First many sketches and drawings are created the proposed sculpture. Then many teams will sculpt a small version or model to help work from. Finally, comes the sport, where teams will practice packing sand, carving it and shaping it into their creation. There's also the exhausting work of hauling buckets of water, and shoveling sand at a manic pace to finish in the allotted time. After many practices they learn a tremendous amount about what works and what doesn't.
Attending the event is great fun as creatures and objects emerge from the sand. Vendors line the surroundings streets and the festival atmosphere fills the air with music. The competition is huge and well attended but not easily accessed so traffic is a major concern. What is usually a 45 minute drive can turn into 4 hours on this day, and while it seems slower to come in on the trolley, I definitely suggest it. However like any day at the beach, don't forget your swim suit!
