Strictly talking, the Fortune 500 is a listing compiled by Fortune journal raking the highest 500 public corporations of the US as measured by their gross income. Though Silicon Valley is often described as a boys' club the place female CEOs are few and much between, the two largest Fortune 500 firms run by girls are both within the tech trade: Hewlett-Packard, which ranked 10th on Fortune's record and named Meg Whitman CEO final fall, and IBM, which ranked nineteenth and has been run by Ginni Rometty since January.
