Following his sons arrest, Senator Hunt was contacted by Idaho Republican Senator Herman Welker and asked not to stand for reelection. Welker threatened to use the incident to embarrass Senator Hunt. Hunt and his wife, however, refused to bow to blackmail. The Republican-supported Washington Time-Herald printed the story, ultimately resulting in Senator Hunts declared decision to resign, followed by his suicide.
