To the surprise of everyone but Volkswagen (and Audi in the case of its hot selling A3 TDI), it appears that Americans have been won over by the impressive mix of fuel economy and power offered by this German automaker's 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine. This 2.0 liter 140 horsepower/236 lb. feet of torque motor can be found in the 2011 Golf, Jetta and will soon debut in the 2012 Passat.

No matter which model TDI you choose, however, the transmission options are always the same. You can either get your TDI with a traditional six-speed manual transmission or a quick shifting six-speed DSG double clutch automatic. Put simply, double clutch automatics allow quicker shifts and (potentially) better fuel economy than a manual transmission. That has never been the case with traditional automatic transmissions.
