<p><p>"In the last decade, we have not been able to find a bed available in either one of these," said Chief Kidd, referring to the state mental health hospitals in Austin and San Antonio. So the mentally ill end up in jail. Sheriff Cutler says at any given time, as many as 20 inmates in the Hays County Jail are mentally ill -- and treating the mentally ill would help ease overcrowding in the jail. Right now, 80 Hays County inmates are being housed in other county jails -- at a cost to Hays County taxpayers. "Is that where they really need to be? No. They don't need to be there. They need to be in some type of treatment," said the sheriff. Cutler says if the mentally ill were treated, they would stay out of the criminal justice system. And until something is done, both the police chief and the sheriff say the problem is only going to get bigger and more expensive.</p></p>

<h3>Palm Beach couple give record $40M gift to Catholic school fund | www.palmbeachdailynews.com</h3>
<p><p>The couples $40 million donation to the Inner-City Scholarship Fund serves as the founding gift of the funds $125 million capital campaign Kids are Our Capital. The gift was announced last week by the archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, along with the Schwarzmans and Peter Grauer, Bloomberg chairman and president of the scholarship fund. Dolan said the archdiocese will match the Schwarzmans gift to the scholarship fund, which provides tuition assistance to children from underprivileged families attending Catholic schools in the archdiocese. I believe this is the single largest gift ever made to Catholic elementary and secondary education not only in our archdiocese, but in the nation, the cardinal said. That, when combined with the sacrifices parents make to send their children to our schools and the dedication of our teachers and administrators, is a tremendous gift to our city. I am so grateful. Quality education is the single greatest gift we can provide to young people, Steve Schwarzman said, and Catholic schools have been providing it to the children of New York for a long time with great results. Weve met so many impressive young women and men from various religious backgrounds, said Christine Schwarzman, a trustee of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund. They have all benefited greatly from the values provided by a Catholic school education. Providing future generations that same opportunity is very important to us. Monies from the capital campaign are earmarked for creating an endowment that will fund the scholarships in perpetuity. The ICSF currently depends on annual fundraising. Money from the endowment will begin to be awarded in fall 2016 and provide for about 2,900 new scholarships annually, a 43 percent increase.</p></p>
