Malaysia has under gone an outburst of great horror movies since the dawn of the 21st century. Most likely because the censors stopped approving them following your Islamic boom of the 1970's. What means they are so extra-special is the actual fact that many boom beach hack of the greatest ones draw upon the rich local history and myths from the country. In fact, I haven't yet visit a Malay horror movie made prior to the 2000's. Everyone knows the best horror movies are according to potentially true events.

DukunThis 2007 movie was based around true events, which were spooky enough even without the horror movie twists. He enlists the help of Mona Fandey who was a popular pop singer inside the early 1990's, around when this event took place, and her husband. Unbeknownst to him, his fiance was haunted by a spirit before she killed herself. Malay filmmakers saw the huge amount of money it made and saw a bright new market in which they might pounce upon.

CongkakThis 2008 film draws many parallels along with other Western horror films in it plot while still keep its traditional Malay charm. This movie ended up a huge hit in Malaysia and won awards abroad. The pontianak character is a thing all of us have been aware of in myths and legends, because everyone had been aware of it, it was a massive hit among movie goers. The story is pretty simple, it focuses on Meriam who had been murdered and buried in a shallow grave. In the actual event, Mona Fandey was sent to jail where she was hanged in 2001, reportedly smiling very creepily and saying she won't ever die.
