Fame and fortune are all good and well, but to many folks -- even famous types -- nothing brings happiness and fulfillment like a new baby. Lucy Liu, star of major motion pictures including Charlie's Angels and Kill Bill (Volumes 1 and 2), is experiencing the joy of motherhood for herself, as she recently welcomed her first child. She shared her excitement with the world via social media on Thursday, announcing the birth of her son, Rockwell Lloyd Liu.

Hollywood Life noted that the 46-year-old Liu had the assistance of a surrogate in bringing Rockwell into the world. A representative commented on Lucy's announcement in a statement to the celebrity news outlet.
"...Lucy Liu is the proud mother of Rockwell Lloyd Liu, brought into the world via gestational carrier. Mom and baby are healthy and happy."
The website Baby Center features a detailed explanation of gestational surrogacy, including the process, risk factors, and success rates associated with the arrangement. Generally speaking, gestational surrogates carry a child to term on behalf of the baby's "intended parents." The intended parents become the child's legal parents at birth and are involved in the pregnancy and delivery of the baby.
Lucy Liu walked the path to motherhood at her own pace, following her personal philosophy on life. In 2010, she told USA Today that she did not feel any pressure to conform to the expectations of others in the matters of relationships and parenthood.

Even before the birth of her baby, Lucy Liu already demonstrated a deep-rooted interest in caring for children around the world. ABC News noted that Liu has served as a UNICEF ambassador since 2004. According to the organization's website, she "has involved herself in almost all aspects of UNICEF's various campaigns and initiatives and has been influential in supporting its mission of saving and improving children's lives worldwide."
Like every other parent, the actress will soon learn the art of striking a delicate balance between a demanding career and a baby. Lucy Liu is a co-star (and occasional director) for the CBS crime drama Elementary, and she will reprise her role as Viper in the animated film Kung Fu Panda 3 next year.
