The USDA has announced this month that it is waiving its regulatory authority over new genetically engineered lawn grass. The GE grass is made by Scotts Miracle-Gro, and they have been given permission to start selling the Franken-grass without any studies that may prove it to be harmful to human health, the environment, and organic farmers (which it is). With this advance, the USDA has now helped to create a new class of genetically engineered plants, animals and animal drugs that get a "free pass" when it comes to government regulation.
Scott's new, gene-altered grass is "RoundUp Ready", thus we will now be exposed to more of the toxic chemicals Monsanto uses. Monsanto's chemicals have been linked to birth defects and cancer and have been equated with the Agent Orange chemicals that have caused so many health issues for our veterans. The fact that this RoundUp Ready grass is getting a free pass will make it easier for companies like Monsanto to get GMO crops into our food supply with absolutely no government review or public input.
According to the Organic Consumers Association, the people at Monsanto and the biotech industry are claiming that they are not trying to find easier ways to integrate GMO's into our food. Their argument is that genetically engineered food crops would not be accepted into the market without government approval. However, since genetically modified foods don't have to be labeled, how would we know whether new Frankenfoods are being secretly injected into our food supply or not?
We must fight back against this latest attack against our health! The Organic Consumers Association is calling for a consumer boycott of Scott products: Scotts, Miracle-Gro, Ormocote, Ortho, and RoundUp. (Yes, Scotts makes RoundUp!) Click here to see the Boycott flyer!
The only thing in our power is to avoid buying products that we know are in line with Monsanto and the other giant corporations that are trying to jeopardize our health for major profits. Click here to donate to the Organic Consumers Association so that they can continue their campaign against Monsanto and the other corporate giants set on getting GMO food and other products that are harmful to our health into our stores and environment without our knowledge!
In the meantime, do what you can to buy local, organic food. Go to Down to Earth in Granger (15 minutes from South Bend), the Farmers Market, or lawn care program in des moines iowa Patch, where you can more likely find clean food. The less support the industry gets, the harder it will be for them. Even one person refusing to buy GM foods can make a difference!
