today we starting a new job in woking,its quite a big job,and will take a week or so to complete,the job,to strip off the existing roof which has old 20x10 or in metric 250x500 slates on it,we are going to replace them with 24x12,or 300x600 fibre cement slates,they are a man made product,but a cheaper alternative to real slates,which can be quite costly,
the scaffold has been put up over the weekend,i was not there when they done this,it must have been fun,because it is a one way street,cars parked on both sides of the road,meaning the scaffold lorry must have had to be parked miles down the road to start with and they would have had to hump the gear all the way up to the house (bet they were fuming) any way we get started taking off all the ridge tiles,staking them carefully out of the way,we start to take off the slates,only then you can see why the roof is leaking so bad,most of the slates are basically rotten,we get the front of the house slates off by lunch time,bag up all the broken slate and get them down,because it is an old property there is no underlay (felt) underneath the slates,felt was not invented when the did this roof for the first time.
Lunchtime
after lunch we remove the old batons and de-nail the roof trusses,we do not want to put holes in the new underlay.
we roll out the new tyvac breather underlay which is 1.5x50 meter long,so a roll goes a long way,we put on our batons at a gauge of 8" this will give you about a 90 mm head lap, which is plenty of cover for this roof pitch,the next strip off felt goes on ,making sure we over lap by at least 6",and so on felt,batons,till we get to the top,now we move to the other side and repeat the process,we have finished battening, the roof is in the dry,so if it rains it will not leak, that's it for today, home time ,see you all tomorrow.
