Dear Directors-
I want to be drum major. That much I know. Ever since the first marching band show I watched, I wanted to be the person out in front conducting the 100-odd musicians and guard out on the field. But there's more to me trying out than just wanting to do it. All of the candidates can say that. They wouldn't try out if they didn't.
Nobody becomes a Professional Marching Band Person. If that was a job, you would be doing it. You've told us that since day one. The lessons learned in band -the lessons learned as a drum major- are those of leadership, responsibility, dicipline and communication. Qualities that need to carry over into the real world if we're going to get anywhere. Many of the the other candidates exhibit those qualities. I do not. I'm lazy, stubborn, and quiet. But I'm willing to change that and get better, if it means realizing a dream I've had for 10 years.
I'm in no way saying that you should pick me because I suck. That would be retarded. I'm merely saying that I should be drum major because I want to be good.
Someone said that he's doing this because he has the passion to do it right. And he does. Someone said the she's doing it because she has the passion that makes her Band Personified. And she is. I'm doing this out of passion, too.
Passion to better myself. Passion to be prepared for Life After School. Passion to show Tomorrow a better me. I don't just want this position, I need it. I need it to show the Grand Scheme of Things that I'm one of the needles pulling the whole thing together, not just another thread. That I'm a leader, not a mindless sheep. That I can take care of my 150 family members. That I can take orders, give orders, solve problems, and prevent new ones from arising.
I'm the man for the job, because I will jump through hoops to do it right, and learn from it.
