The winning mixture of Doug Balnaves https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpdhe5YcrGI fruit and Peter Bissell’s winemaking has propelled this 52-ha estate near the southern finish of Coonawarra into the major echelon of Coonawarra producers. The flagship is The Tally, a big, impressive, oaky Cabernet Sauvignon that requires at least 5–8 years’ ageing. Cabernet Sauvignon is also in a powerful mould with good breadth and fashion as well as intensity – a seriously excellent expression of Coonawarra fruit. Ripe, concentrated Shiraz can be at least as good. At a more very affordable level, The Mix (typicallyMerlot/Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon) and Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, are each ripe, round and pleasurable drinking if practically nothing more. This currently being Coonawarra there is not significantly white but a Chardonnay with delightful fruit and very well-worked oak is amongst the much better examples from the Limestone Coast. A sweetish Sparkling Cabernet is a respectable illustration of its form. Doug Balnaves and son Peter also handle vineyards and make wines for other people in the district.
