xoxoFor a while, I've been keeping Locke's history ambiguous. It started because I didn't have time because of grad school, or because I didn't care enough -- I was really in love with writing Brand and I didn't like being distracted. When I finally got around to plotting for him, I had lost any hope of remembering what I had planned for him. So he became the blank slate, and that worked for him. Tricky, unannounced, hard to pin down -- he became fun to write just because I didn't have a complete plan for him.
xoxoThe first real plans I made for him were based on other people. I had a template, "he's a bartender, he's working for the Thieves, he's not the best kind of person," with a tiny little kink for torture and the mandolin. Y'know, disgraced little rich boy, whatever. He made a name for himself as who he was and lived in the present. Another character helped him flesh out a bit, and that was Guinevere Wylde, a Hyena assassin in the Guild. Because he was pretty aloof with people, Kayla (Standard Toaster Monster) and I figured they might be good friends. He was distant from others and made friends almost purely to use them later. She (from what I understand) has no desire to get close to many people.
xoxoI guess it just took a little investment from someone else, too, because ever since then I'll think of other things about him. For now, they're small things: his home country as Dunbroch (from Brave) and how he killed his accent, family dying in a fire, a serving girl named Irene... Stuff like this. Still, I think I'll keep it hazy for a bit, and here's the reason why: he's a character that is just as happy experiencing the present as he ever is. As far as human beings go, maybe not the best kind of person, but definitely one I enjoy writing.
