Soon after 29 years at PENFOLDS, through which time he was Chief Wine Maker for sixteen years, John Duval struck out on his very own in 2003. Unsurprisingly for the guy who produced Grange for numerous years, old vine Barossa Valley Shiraz is at the heart of what he does. Having said that, Duval is not seeking to recreate the powerful, muscular type of Grange. Rather, his source of inspiration is Penfolds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba3i0_mRe-o RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz, a wine which he was instrumental in producing since he wanted to realise the Barossa’s potential to create sophisticated Shiraz making use of French oak. Grapes are sourced from pockets of excellence across the Barossa. The wines are prolonged and layered, characterised by fleshy berry fruit of terrific purity supported by ripe, polished tannins. Plexus displays the characteristic red cherry notes of Grenache, but the design is far more restrained and pleasingly drier in perception than is normal for the Barossa. Although rich and involving, Entity Shiraz exhibits a light hand in terms of oak and extraction. Flagship Eligo is extra iron fist in velvet glove, displaying denser layers of fruit well met by highly effective but ripe tannins. A white Plexus is also created from a mix of Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier. (SA)
