On One Hand: Massage ContraindicationsThere are physical and psychological conditions where massage should not be performed. These are known as contraindications. Inflamed or freshly damaged muscles are one contraindication, although massage may be appropriate after acute swelling has been reduced by time or ice.
On the Other: Massage Aids CirculationAiding the movement of blood and lymph is one of the basic benefits of massage therapy. Improved blood flow will speed the removal of spent blood and its replacement by fresh, oxygenated blood.
Bottom LineMassage therapy is a healing technique and should meet the "Do no harm" requirement. That is why contraindications are a key part of massage therapist training. Until or unless a muscle is able to take directly applied pressure, the risk of doing damage outweighs the potential advantages of massage to a strained muscle.
