Duluth's Miscellaneous Manufacturers
At McDonald Rentals, we satisfaction ourselves on making the equipment rental, social gathering rental, and mini-storage rental expertise pleasant and problem-free for the home-owner and small contractor. Cooper closed the Duluth plant in October 1994 and moved its operations to amenities in North and South Carolina. Duluth Boat Club financier Julius Barnes organized the Western Rug Firm in 1909 (initially the Western Linen Firm) to manufacture linen yarns from flax straw, which till then farmers considered waste product. In 1924 its officers included Barnes' business accomplice, William Ames, and James Ten Eyck, the legendary coach of the Duluth Boat Membership's national championship rowing squad.

By 1916 they'd added buildings for planers, ripsaws, jigsaws, mortising machines, moulders, turning lathes, and polishers — along with storage sheds and a drying kiln — and the plant coated two city blocks. In 1922 Union Match merged with Minnesota Match and a 12 months later that agency was purchased by Delaware's Federal Match Company. Frederick A. Patrick learned the wholesale business at a number of prominent Duluth corporations, together with a stint as firm secretary for Stone-Ordean-Wells, before starting F. A. Patrick & Company in 1900. In 1903 Patrick had William Hunt design a seven-story brick constructing at 302 South Fifth Avenue West.

The timing was unhealthy, and after the stock market crash of 1929 — and with stiff competition from mills in New England — Patrick Duluth closed its operations. One of the first companies to build Self Storage Duluth within the Village of West Duluth because it developed within the late 1880s was the Minnesota Iron Automobile Company, which produced freight railroad automobiles.

Minnesota Automobile suspended operations in 1891 and became the Duluth Manufacturing Firm, which continued to provide railway cars till 1896. After considering Niagara Falls as the situation for a brand new plant, he chose Duluth because of the considerable power amenities obtainable by harnessing the St. Louis River at the falls by the Great Northern Power Company.” In 1908 American Carbolite took over the vacant Minnesota Car Firm / Duluth Manufacturing plant.

For years it was one of many largest and most successful industries in West Duluth — the power might produce 200,000 pounds of carbolite a day, sufficient to create twelve million cubic feet of fuel. In 1928 American Carbolite was sold to Union Carbide, but in Duluth the company operated under the outdated name. In 1912 the firm moved to West Duluth and constructed a manufacturing unit, workplace building, warehouse, and storeroom at 4702 Grand Avenue.
