Porcelli Book Review: PERMANENT OBSCURITY By Richard Perez
ProsEngaging, edgy story-telling, believable characters. Full ReviewThe concept of the alienated boho artist may be an outdated one within our culture. This helps to make the strangeness of a book like PERMANENT OBSCURITY be noticeable even more.

I cannot over-stress how this takes things out of the physical realm and puts them solidly into the psychological realm. . Serena continues to be taking out Craigslist ads as a dominatrix as a means of getting by then lucks out as a fetish model with Dolores as her primary photographer. In ClosingThis novel deserves to find an audience.

This is not just a mainstream book due to the subject matter and language. But an entire belt is much. and what may be the result?PERMANENT OBSCURITY is surely an artist's nightmare of sorts. In ClosingA bold and darkly funny book worth reading.

Hatred for everything American was at an historical high and we were paranoid (paranoia accurately reflected in mainstream movies like HOSTEL). In this climate of fear and self-loathing and isolationism, PERMANENT OBSCURITY tells the seedy yarn of Dolores and Serena, two East Village archetypes, who puff and snort their way to infamy after committing an act of Abu Ghraib-style one-upsmanship with a perverted twist. Drugs play an element -- a huge part -- both in this story and on this culture: this subterranean socio-class of disgruntled and angry artists (or would-be artists). At least on this case, and mostly likely in most cases like this. And here's the more subtle yet amazingly profound benefit I mentioned above.

PERMANENT OBSCURITY: Or a Cautionary Tale of Two Girls and Their Misadventures with Drugs, Pornography and Death by Dolores Santana (as told to Richard Perez). Isolating the key narrative thread in PERMANENT OBSCURITY, it's mostly a comedy of excess or a "cautionary mistress cam tale" farce. You might perhaps be pleasantly surprised.

For the surprising, twisted ending alone, PERMANENT OBSCURITY will probably be worth seeking out. . . In ClosingA bold and darkly funny book worth reading.
