Could it be because they are the most well known band in the world ?
And surely you know a few other "British" musicians, like The Rolling Stones, Phil Collins Genesis, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, even The Sex Pistols and many more!
Could it be that our culture, history and way of thinking leads to such an inventive and imaginative music scene ?
If anyone in the world talks about "The" Queen, who's queen are they generally talking about ?
So well known is the British Royal Family. You probably know most of their names, certainly Diana was pretty well known.
We started the industrial Revolution, if my history books were right.
And what about comedy ?
Have you ever known a Nation that can produce such ground breaking forms of Comedy ?
I've never heard of anyone like Rowan Atkinson, coming from any other country.
Plus such classics as "Hitch-hikers guide to the Galaxy", "Monty Python", "Benny Hill", "The Royle Family", "The young ones" and "League of Gentlemen".
Dr. Gregory House, in the program "House" is an English comic actor called Hugh Laurie, who had previously worked with Rowan Atkinson.
And we have an uncanny way of laughing at ourselves, and seeing the funny side of tragedy.
I believe that the majority of all the games in the world were invented by the British.
Football, Rugby, Tennis, Cricket, Badminton, Darts, Snooker, Billiards and the Bobsleigh sports and Skiing. Even American football and Baseball are based on games previously played in England. Although the world celebrates the Greek beginnings of sport with the Olympic games, the British imagination, and fascination with games, created far more of today's modern sports than any other nation in the world
But you are right of course, we just can't PLAY these sports too well.
It is like we are cursed, because we can NEVER win at ANY game we invented.
It is a part of our culture that we laugh about too.
You cannot believe the panic that spreads across England, if it comes to taking penalties to decide an important football match. We know before the first penalty is taken, that we're gonna lose ! It's our Karma, our destiny.
We are so used to losing, that Murray losing against Federer is just another example of this.
C'est la vie, egale, who cares ?
Sport is not about wining or losing, the most important thing is how you play the game.
Or that is how we intended the games to be played.
