Railway Arch Infill at Frodingham Viaduct
Foam Concrete Ltd

Foam Concrete complete railway arch infills for Frodingham Railway Viaduct in Scunthorpe Lincolnshire. The 150 year old viaduct had five railway arches requiring structural support . The viaduct is the main supply line for transport of coal to Scunthorpe's Corus Steel Works and serious movements had been recorded due to the continual train motions.

Lightweight foam concrete was selected for this project in order to support the arches whilst guaranteeing only minimal interference with the initial ground conditions.

The project involved pouring foam concrete in one meter layers (one layer at a time) to form a pyramid structure around the walls of the viaduct. Plastic-lined form work was built up around the viaduct up to a height of 11 meters.

A large trailer unit was used for the project, with the capacity to make up to 400+ cubic meters every day and pump concrete over more than 500 linear meters. The automated, computerised system delivers consistent quality from one batch to the next for perfect Foam Concrete every time. After every day, the computer prints out the quantity of water and the weight of cementitious material used in the production process so operators can refer to the mix design and estimate the volume supplied.

Foam Concrete Batching Plant

The Foam Concrete batching plant processes combinations of cement and slag or cement and Pfa supplied by tanker, so there is no contamination with impurities such as stone and sand, which can be a problem when supplied by standard concrete companies. From each 30 ton delivery, Foam Concrete can supply 50-130m3 dependent on the concrete density required.

Cement deliveries were precisely scheduled at 90-minute intervals to ensure silos are kept well supplied. An additional benefit is that silos can be restocked overnight (with over 40 tons of material) so foam concrete production can begin immediately every morning without the need to wait for deliveries from a concrete plant.

Foam Concrete are experienced in operating under challenging conditions where traditional concrete suppliers would be hard pressed to pump the required volume of concrete over the necessary distance. Since Foam Concrete can be pumped over more ethan 500 meters, it can be used even in busy areas with minimal interference to traffic.

Foam Concrete is a low impact, low carbon, environmentally friendly solution. Contact Foam Concrete today to find out how they can help you meet your requirements for pourable, pumpable concrete.
