Spur innovation: 3 tips from NASA HR
NASA aims to create a "culture of innovation," Jeri Buchholz, NASA's assistant administrator for human capital management, told Federal News Radio. To that end, the space agency focuses on three strategies:

1. Communication between execs and employees. NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden visits employees at their work stations to chat about their work and ask for their views of the agency. He encourages staff to speak up about problems and ideas.

2. Front-line supervisor training. The agency has enrolled 500 leaders and potential leaders in development programs to teach them personal effectiveness, relating to others and self-reflection.

3. Nonmonetary rewards. The most-coveted rewards, according to NASA: learning opportunities, flexible hours, autonomy and the chance to work with specific teams or managers. Co-workers are also encouraged to commend peers for good work.
