Mattel's classic View-Master toy has received a new digital make-over, thanks to Google Cardboard.
Mattel's iconic View-Master – the stereoscopic photo viewer that debuted at the 1939 World's Fair – is entering the digital age. The original View-Master incorporated small photographic slides that provided three-dimensional images from movies, TV shows, or famous tourist destinations around the world.
Now, thanks to Google Cardboard Virtual Reality technology, the View-Master is stepping into the 21st century. The new View-Master includes a slot for Android phones, which provides the user with all sorts of viewing options through the toy's companion cell-phone app.
For the first time, the View-Master experience will include animations and sound effects, which play through the phone's speaker. (Worry not, View-Master traditionalists. The company will still sell physical reels, just like in the old days.)
Mattel has sold over 100 million View-Masters over the years. By incorporating new technology, Mattel is positioning the View-Master brand for long-term success. Furthermore, the new price point is extremely reasonable at just $29.99. The now-optional physical reels phone charging kiosk will retail at $14.99 per three-pack.
With the Cardboard-powered View-Master set to arrive this fall, we could be looking at this holiday season's hot new toy. The combination of new technologies and financial affordability is usually a pretty potent mix.
Of course, if you drain your smartphone's battery using the View-Master, all you need to do is find your nearest cell phone charging station.
